Matt Baume’s Marriage News Watch 8/25/14

Monday, August 25th, 2014

Matt BaumeThe anti-gay Governor of Indiana just got caught making some wild claims in court, and now a judge has called him out in a sternly-worded ruling. Marriage equality has picked up another victory, with the first federal judge to rule in Florida. There’s a new case in Arizona, with an elderly couple about to lose their home; couples are fighting back against stalling tactics in Arkansas; and two major oral arguments are coming up in the next few days.

Matt Baume’s Marriage News Watch 8/4/14

Monday, August 4th, 2014

Matt BaumeI’m back on the East Coast this week, reporting on AFER’s huge victory in Virginia. The fourth circuit has upheld a ruling that the state’s marriage ban is unconstitutional.

There’s been immediate fallout from that ruling in several nearby states.

We also have new southern polling, and victory in Alaska, but only for dead people.

New Ohio Marriage Equality Ad to Air

Wednesday, July 30th, 2014

OhioFor the first time in a decade, a new Ohio marriage equality ad will air in the state.

ABC6 reports:

Starting Wednesday an ad supporting gay marriage will begin running statewide. The TV spot tells the story of George and Henry – they’re two Ohioans who have been together fifty years. Although their marriage license says New York, here’s how the commercial ends: “Hopefully, Ohio will be next.” Next week, a huge rally will be held in Cincinnati. Mike Premo, of Why Marriage Matters Ohio told ABC 6, “We’re expecting a really big turnout. It’s going to be a historic day.” The rally will be held the night before a federal court hears gay marriage cases from four states.

It won’t be long now, Ohio.

Matt Baume’s Marriage News Watch 7/21/14

Monday, July 21st, 2014

Matt BaumeSeems like every state with a marriage lawsuit is getting ready for the big showdown at the Supreme Court.

In just the last week, there’s been a bunch of activity: one circuit scheduled arguments and then immediately canceled them; Colorado is letting some couples get married but not others on a county-by-county basis; and Oklahoma is catching up to Utah with a major victory of their own.

But the really really big news is the Department of Justice announcing that they’ll defend the freedom to marry before SCOTUS. It’s not a huge surprise, but it’s a pretty big deal.

Edie Windsor Talks About Love and Workplace Struggles in Second Part of Video Series

Friday, July 11th, 2014

Edie and TheaMarriage Equality USA is proud to release Part 2 in of Edie Windsor: In Her Own Words, a multi-part series of interviews with LGBTQ icon and longtime MEUSA member Edie Windsor.

In this segment Edie recounts her life before and after the Stonewall uprising and her long and “persistent” courtship of her late wife Thea. Her honest portrayal of what it was like to be queer in the workforce during this time is especially poignant considering the current debate around LGBTQ workplace discrimination issues and the Employment Non Discrimination Act (ENDA).

Each of these videos, the first being released today with others to follow throughout July, explores Edie’s life through her own words as she relates her story to her friend and MEUSA colleague, Cathy Marino-Thomas. From how she met Thea and got to know the LGBTQ world during their early days together, through their struggle to get married, and eventually to the DOMA case and the Supreme Court of the United States.

MEUSA Releases Historic Edie Windsor Video

Thursday, June 26th, 2014

Edie Windsor

One year ago today, Windsor v. United States became one of the most important court cases in history for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community. Since June 2013, every single one of the 15 court cases striking down bans on marriage equality has used the Windsor decision at the core of its legal decision.

“All of this began when a now famous Marriage Equality New York (MEUSA) volunteer decided she wouldn’t take “no” for an answer,” said MEUSA Executive Director Brian Silva. “We all owe a huge debt of gratitude to Edie Windsor and her late wife Thea for standing up for all of us. In celebration of the one-year anniversary of the Windsor decision, and in appreciation for the support shown for Edie, her wife Thea, MENY, MEUSA and the entire marriage equality movement, I am proud today to launch the first in our series of intimate MEUSA interviews with Edie.”

“Join us over the next few weeks in getting to know Edie – in her own words,” said MEUSA Board Member Cathy Marino-Thomas. “It was an honor and a joy to hear Edie’s story in person, and now for us to be able to share her incredible story with the world.”

Happy Windsor Anniversary to us all!
