USA, Nevada: GOP Drops Opposition to Marriage Equality

Monday, April 14th, 2014

Nevada mapThe Nevada GOP just voted to drop opposition to abortion and marriage equality from its party platform.

LGBTQ Nation reports:

The Nevada Republican Party stripped opposition to abortion and gay marriage from its platform Saturday as state convention delegates instead focused on judging fellow Republicans on their worthiness to serve in office and adherence to GOP values. The platform, with few changes, was adopted overwhelmingly as the Las Vegas convention stretched late into the evening. The vote mirrors that of the Clark County GOP, which voted earlier to remove platform language defining marriage as between a man and a woman and statements opposing abortion.

Is it a fluke, or are conservatives slowly moving to support marriage equality? Will we see this replicated in other states in time for 2016?

USA, Virginia: Sore Loser Ken Cuccinelli Issued Anti-Gay Marriage Opinion in Final Days

Monday, January 13th, 2014

Virginia Attorney General Ken CuccinelliTaking one final stab at the LGBT community before leaving office, Virginia gubernatorial loser Ken Cuccinelli issued a pair of nonbonding opinions against marriage equality, benefits for gays, and restrictions on abortion.

The Pilot Online reports:

During his final days as attorney general, Ken Cuccinelli released a pair of nonbinding opinions that can be read as legal arguments against Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s campaign pledges to fight for gay rights and undo abortion restrictions.

In one, Cuccinelli, who lost to McAuliffe in the 2013 governor’s race, says a governor can’t order state officials to permit legally married gay couples to file joint Virginia tax returns because the state bans same-sex marriage and formal recognition of it. The other asserts that a governor lacks authority to “issue a policy directive to suspend a regulation that was properly adopted pursuant to a statutory mandate.” It appears to target intended protections for gay state employees and efforts to invalidate strict licensing rules for abortion clinics.

You almost have to admire Cuccinelli’s pure dickishness – he stuck with his bigotry until the bitter end.

Vatican Sends Out Survey on Birth Control, Abortion, and Marriage Equality

Friday, November 1st, 2013

The VaticanThe Vatican is sending out a survey to all of its Bishops to get local parishes more involved in church decision-making on important issues.

Edge Boston reports:

The poll was sent in mid-October to every national conference of bishops with a request from the Vatican coordinator, Archbishop Lorenzo Baldisseri, to “share it immediately as widely as possible to deaneries and parishes so that input from local sources can be received.” The survey reflects the pope’s pledges to move away from what he called a “Vatican-centric” approach toward one where local church leaders are more involved in decision-making.

Among the questions are whether gay marriage is recognized in their country and how priests minister to same-sex couples, including how churches can respond when gays seek a religious education or Holy Communion for their children. The poll also asks “how is God’s mercy proclaimed” to separated, divorced and remarried couples. Additional information is sought on the pastoral care of men and women who live together outside of marriage. The survey also asks parishes whether they believe married men and women tend to follow church teaching barring the use of artificial contraception.

I’m kinda liking this new Pope’s style.

USA, Texas: Marriage Equality Bill to Be Re-Introduced

Thursday, June 27th, 2013

Texas mapAnd in Texas, too! As republicans gear up with yet another special session in the legislature to try to push through an anti-abortion bill, one member plans to use it to re-introduce a marriage equality bill. Gay Web Source reports:

Upon the announcement today of a second special legislative session by Governor Rick Perry, as well as the Supreme Court decision on the Defense of Marriage Act, State Representative Lon Burnam (D-Fort Worth) today announced his intention to re-file his Marriage Equality bill from the 83rd regular Legislative Session, HB 1300. “The Supreme Court found today that the federal government acted to ‘impose a disadvantage, a separate status, and so a stigma upon all who enter into same-sex marriages.’ I can assure you the Texas Legislature did the same. As such, it is time to renounce our homophobic state laws and usher in marriage equality in Texas,” said Rep. Burnam.

Perry has low hangers – I’ll give him that much. Not that it’s likely to happen, but wouldn’t it be nice to see a potential abortion defeat turned into a marriage equality victory?

Santorum Losing Catholic Vote Over Abortion, Marriage Equality Stands?

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

Rick Santorum, a Roman Catholic, has not fared well with Catholic voters, exit polls from states that have held nominating contests show.

According to several analysts, Santorum’s opposition to birth control and gay marriage could be alienating Catholic voters.

“It’s not easy to describe the typical Catholic anymore,” Thomas Reese, director of the Woodstock Theological Center, a Jesuit research institute affiliated with Georgetown University, told Reuters. “We’ve always traditionally been the big tent that included people of all stripes.”

From Same-Sex Marriage To Abortion- GOP Proving That They Aren’t Interested In Jobs

Monday, May 9th, 2011

The headlines speak for themselves. “Don’t put bigotry up for a vote.” “Amendment is just a red herring.” “Beware of casting political ideas in stone.” “Gay marriage is about clashing cultures.” “The GOP is wasting time on marriage amendment.” “Betting on bigotry may backfire this time.” And so forth. In fact, the editorial headlines are probably causing conniptions in the headquarters of the National Organization for Marriage. Well, that and the fact that their own little poll has been shown to be nothing more than a fraud written by a biased pollster.

In fact, it goes well beyond that. According to one source, there is not a single newspaper in Minnesota which has decided to support the GOP in their attempts to enshrine bigotry in the state’s constitution. In fact, many of them are upset over the waste of time and money that is going into the effort. People want jobs is the message, and what they are getting is the culture war.

In fact, that is what is going on everywhere. The GOP are fighting the culture war while people are being turned out onto the streets because they can’t pay their mortgages.

Ireland: Labour Party Leader Promises Constitutional rewrite, Could Open Up Gay Marriage, Abortion Debates

Monday, April 19th, 2010

LABOUR Party leader Eamon Gilmore will re-open the divisive abortion debate through his promise to rewrite the Constitution if he gets into power.

Aside from abortion, Mr Gilmore’s constitutional reform plan would also open up a host of contentious issues like the recognition of God, property rights, the definition of the family, gay marriage and the EU. Any changes to the Constitution would have to be ratified by a referendum.

Following on from Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny’s political reform proposals, such as scrapping the Seanad, Mr Gilmore said he also wanted to see institutional changes – but didn’t say what they should be.
