Italy: Archbishop in Vatican Open to Civil Unions For Gay and Lesbian Couples

Sunday, April 21st, 2013

Italy: VaticanPope John Paul II’s liturgical master of ceremonies, Archbishop Piero Marini, has signaled that the Vatican should be open to civil unions for same-sex couples. The National Catholic Reporter has the details:

During a Vatican news conference on Feb. 4, Paglia said that while the church is opposed to anything that treats other unions as equivalent to marriage between a man and a woman, it could accept “private law solutions” for protecting people’s rights. In some quarters that comment was styled as undercutting bishops in both France and the United States who at the time were fighting off proposals for gay marriage, though Paglia insisted it’s not what he meant. The Marini comments may also reawaken interest in the new pope’s history on the issue.

As we’ve reported before, the new Pope had supported civil unions in Argentina as a way to forestall full marriage equality there.

California, USA: San Francisco’s Catholic Archbishop Talks About Marriage Equality Opposition

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore CordileoneSan Francisco’s recently-installed Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone gave an interview to USA Today on his opposition to marriage equality. The gist? Letting gays marry would turn all of society into inner city Oakland:

When I was Bishop of Oakland, I lived at a residence at the Cathedral, overlooking Lake Merritt. It’s very beautiful. But across the lake, as the streets go from 1st Avenue to the city limits at 100th Avenue, those 100 blocks consist entirely of inner city neighborhoods plagued by fatherlessness and all the suffering it produces: youth violence, poverty, drugs, crime, gangs, school dropouts, and incredibly high murder rates. Walk those blocks and you can see with your own eyes: A society that is careless about getting fathers and mothers together to raise their children in one loving family is causing enormous heartache.

To legalize marriage between two people of the same sex would enshrine in the law the principle that mothers and fathers are interchangeable or irrelevant, and that marriage is essentially an institution about adults, not children; marriage would mean nothing more than giving adults recognition and benefits in their most significant relationship.

Got that? Keep in mind, this is from the man who was pulled over for drunk driving last year.

Wednesday, December 26th, 2012

England, UK; Archbishop of Westminster Calls Marriage Equality Plan a ShamblesThe leader of the Roman Catholic church in England and Wales has attacked the Government’s plans for marriage equality as an undemocratic shambles.

The archbishop of Westminster, Vincent Nichols spoke to the BBC ahead of his Christmas Day service. Last night during his Christmas Eve mass service, he attacked the Government legislating for equality.
He told the BBC: “There was no announcement in any party manifesto, no green paper, no statement in the Queen’s speech.

“And yet here we are on the verge of primary legislation. From a democratic point of view, it’s a shambles.

Washington, USA: Archbishop’s Statement Proves Marriage Equality Doesn’t Need to Impact Religious Freedom

Monday, December 17th, 2012

Washington Archbishop's Statement Proves Marriage Equality Doesn't Need to Impact Religious FreedomIn the wake of Washington state voters approving the state’s new civil marriage and religious freedom law, which allows same-sex couples to marry, Archbishop J. Peter Sartain has summarized archdiocesan policy regarding same-sex marriage.

Appropriately, these prohibitions are based on canon law, which Sartain quotes at length to explain the policy. But then Sartain goes on to cite numerous sections of Washington state civil law (Revised Code of Washington, or RCW) to assure archdiocese employees that civil law supports their right to follow these points of canon law. The RCW was heavily amended by the new marriage law to include the extensive religious freedom assurances that Sartain is taking comfort in.

By citing the religious freedom sections of the RCW as amended by Washington’s new marriage law, Archbishop Sartain is assuring the faithful that such claims are baseless.

California, USA: San Francisco’s New Archbishop, Architect of Prop 8, Caught in DUI

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

San Francisco's New Archbishop, Architect of Prop 8, Caught in DUIThe Rev. Salvatore Cardileone, the bishop of Oakland whom the Pope picked as the next Archbishop of San Francisco, was arrested early Saturday in San Diego and accused of driving while under the influence.

Cardileone is well-documented for his efforts to raise money in the effort pass California’s Proposition 8, which took away marriage for gay and lesbian couples. He helped to create the initiative, and rallied Catholics to support Prop 8 through donations and at the ballot box. The Associated Press reported that Cardileone gave at least $6,000 of his own money, according to campaign finance records.

California, USA: Prop 8 Catholic Bishop Appointed as New Archbishop of San Francisco

Saturday, July 28th, 2012

Prop 8 Pushing Catholic Bishop Appointed as New Archbishop of San FranciscoOne of the most virulently anti-gay Catholic officials in the United States, Salvatore Cordileone, who is considered the father of Proposition 8, has been named the new Archbishop of San Francisco. Highly-regarded Whispers In The Loggia blogger Rocco Palmo is stunned.

Depending on how one looks at things, this Friday morning brings either the most courageously bold — or stunningly brazen — American appointment in the seven-year reign of Pope Benedict XVI.

[snip]

After a half-century of occupants accused by conservatives of soft-pedaling church teaching in favor of a more conciliatory approach toward constituencies ranging from gays and lesbians to Nancy Pelosi — a group of prelates among which even the recently-retired lead guardian of church doctrine, Cardinal William Levada, was not exempt from stinging criticism — the move delivers the long-desired “Holy Grail” of the American Catholic Right firmly into the faction’s hands.

United Kingdom: Archbishop Says Government Has No Right to Introduce Marriage Equality

Saturday, July 7th, 2012

UK Archbishop Says Government Has No Right to Introduce Marriage EqualityLaunching his strongest attack yet on the Coalition’s plans to allow homosexual couples to marry, Dr Rowan Williams questioned the right of ministers to make the change when it had not been included in the Conservative or Liberal Democrat election manifestos.

His intervention follows the publication last month of the Church of England’s response to the Government’s consultation on same-sex marriage.

The document warned the move would threaten the established status of the Church, labelling the plans “divisive” and “essentially ideological”.

UK: Anglican Bishop Compares Fighting Marriage Equality to Supporting Slavery

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

United Kingdom: Anglican Bishop Compares Fighting Marriage Equality to Fighting SlaveryAs the British government prepares to advance marriage equality, an Anglican bishop condemned religious leaders on Saturday who speak out against same-sex marriage, comparing their anti-gay rhetoric to the Church’s support of slavery as “God-given” in the 18th century.

“Experience might lead us to be cautious about the certainty with which moral positions are built with Biblical support,” Rt Rev Nicholas Holtam, the Bishop of Salisbury, said. “Before Wilberforce, Christians in this country saw slavery as having Biblical support for what was the God-given in the ordering of creation”:

“In South Africa, Apartheid was seen in the same way by the Dutch Reformed Church. “Within the churches, Christians conscientiously disagree about the interpretation and significance of the six Biblical passages referring to homosexuality.” […]

Wales, UK: Archbishop Favors Marriage Equality

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

The Archbishop of Wales has said his Church should acknowledge civil marriage equality for gay couples and work against an impression that it is ‘uncaring and unsympathetic’ and leading gay people to feel ‘unwanted, unloved, and sinful’.

According to Wales Online, Dr Morgan told the Church in Wales’ governing body: “All life-long committed relationships deserve the welcome, pastoral care and support of the Church.” The faithful, he continued, “need to show how the Gospel of Jesus is good news for gay people”.

Dr Barry Morgan, who has been Archbishop for the Anglican communion in Wales since 2003, said in his presidential address today: “The Government’s consultation on civil marriage raises a whole host of theological questions for the church. “My concern at the moment is that in any discussion which might ensue on this, gay people may once more gain the impression that the church is uncaring and unsympathetic.

UK: Catholic Archbishop Launches Attack on Marriage Equality Plan in Churches

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

Catholic Archbishop Attacks Marriage Equality PlansThe head of the Roman Catholic Church in England will be the latest church leader to try to ambush the prime minister’s attempt to legalise same-sex marriage when he launches his “no” campaign from the pulpit this weekend.

Archbishop of Westminster Vincent Nichols has written a pastoral letter to be read out during Mass in dozens of churches on Sunday, warning about the dangers of changing the legal definition of marriage.

Prime Minister David Cameron is already facing a religious backlash from many in the Anglican mother church, the Church of England, which has sometimes been called the “Conservative Party at prayer”.
