Georgia, USA: Atlanta Mayor Announces Support for Marriage Equality

Wednesday, December 12th, 2012

Atlanta Mayor Announces Support for Marriage EqualityWhen President Barack Obama came out in support of marriage equality, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said that he was still “wrestling with my own personal beliefs.” Now, Reed, joining such civil rights leaders as Rev. Al Sharpton and U.S. Rep John Lewis, has voiced his full support for people of the same sex having the right to marry like every other citizen.

My Praise Atlanta reports:

“Today marks an important day as I announce my support for marriage equality,” said Mayor Reed in a statement. “It is well known that I have gone through a good bit of reflection on this issue, but listening to the stories of so many people that I know and care about has strengthened my belief that marriage is a fundamental right for everyone.”

Georgia, USA: Atlanta City Council Endorses Marriage Equality

Wednesday, December 5th, 2012

Georgia, USA: Atlanta City Council Endorses Marriage EqualityAtlanta’s City Council approved a resolution Monday night to support marriage equality, countering Mayor Kasim Reed’s previously stated opposition to extending marriage rights to same-sex couples.

The effort was led by openly gay council member Alex Wan, who told the Georgia Voice that he had been waiting for the right moment to introduce the resolution.

“Folks in the community have been asking and encouraging me to do something,” Wan told the Voice. “And with Atlanta being the city it is and having such a large LGBT population, I really wanted us to be one of the leaders in the discussion on marriage equality.”

Georgia, USA: Time for Atlanta Mayor to Get On Board With Marriage Equality

Wednesday, November 14th, 2012

Georgia, USA: Time for Atlanta Mayor to Get On Board With Marriage EqualityIn January of this year, hundreds of mayors from cities all across the country joined together to sign on to the Mayors for the Freedom to Marry, a declaration endorsing marriage equality for all of their constituents. Although mayors have no direct governing effect on marriage laws, it was nonetheless a significant symbolic affirmation of the critical role that mayors play in advancing civil rights.

Mayors of cities large and small, from Maine to Texas, North Carolina to California, all declared their commitment to helping gay and lesbian citizens achieve equal treatment under the law, proudly proclaiming that all loving couples deserve to express their lifelong commitment through marriage. Although some naysayers contested that it was ineffectual and merely symbolic, the fact is, in the absence of equality, symbols matter.

Notably missing from the list was Mayor Kasim Reed of Atlanta, the gay capital of the South and the city of civil rights. He remains implacable on this issue, and though mayors from both parties across the country continue to join the chorus of support, Reed stubbornly drags his feet.

Georgia, USA: President Obama’s Marriage Equality Announcement Complicates Atlanta Mayoral Race

Saturday, June 9th, 2012

President Obama's Marriage Equality Announcement Complicates Atlanta Mayoral RaceOne month has now passed since President Barack Obama endorsed same-sex marriage. In doing so, Obama delighted the LGBT community and shook cultural conservatives in the GOP out of their post-primary stupor. All predictable – and perhaps even intentional.

But collateral damage has resulted, too. The president’s evolution on a central tenet of gay rights has condemned Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, one of his strongest supporters, to an interesting re-election bid in 2013.

One day after Obama’s announcement, the mayor – in a written statement – declared his respect for the president decision, reviewed his past support for gay and lesbian causes, and announced that he was “still wrestling with my own personal beliefs on the issue of marriage.” Reed hasn’t publicly addressed the matter since. This despite a good deal of prodding, including a Facebook page with the title “Mayor Reed, It’s Time to ‘Evolve’ on Marriage Equality,” which now has 4,250 members. More on this later.
