PinkSixty News 12/8/10: Atlanta Gay Bar Payout; Queer Protesters in London

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

The US city of Atlanta will pay $1 million to a gay club, this week. Nineteen customers of ‘The Eagle’ filed a lawsuit after it suffered a botched police raid in 2009.

As London prepares for more protests from student activists over tuition fees, a gay space has been created for queer protesters. A campaigns officer at Manchester University organised the zone amid fears of violence.

GA: Megachurch Preacher Who Crusaded Against Gays Accused of Forcing Sex on Male Teens

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

As Bishop Eddie Long poked through a salad in his church office one summer day in 1999, he shot a weary look at a person ticking off his ministry’s successes. His Atlanta megachurch had already reached 25,000 members. He had been invited to the White House, built a global television ministry and drove around town in a $350,000 Bentley.

But Long told the visitor who had come to write about him that the pressures of being a high-profile pastor could be brutal. “You don’t want any of this,” he said in a raspy baritone as he shook his head. “You don’t want any of this …” Long didn’t get more specific about those pressures.

Today, the 57-year-old minister, known for his public crusades against homosexuality, faces serious allegations. On Tuesday, two young men who were members of Long’s New Birth Missionary Baptist Church filed lawsuits claiming he used his position as their spiritual counselor to coerce them into sexual relationships.

GA: NOM Attracts 35 People in Atlanta; 300 Counterprotest Across the Street

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

“Redefining marriage” by allowing gay couples to legally wed amounts to “genocide” and will lead to the “extinction” of the human race, the niece of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. argued on the steps of the Georgia Capitol today. The National Organization for Marriage brought its national road tour to Atlanta on Saturday, but once again, supporters of the group that fights against gay marriage were vastly outnumbered by a counter-protest for LGBT equality.

The lopsided numbers were typical for NOM’s “Summer of Marriage” tour, which has drawn low attendance on other stops as well. In Atlanta, only about 35 people – including their speakers, performers, volunteers and the media – converged in front of the state capitol.

Across the street on the sidewalk in front of Central Presbyterian Church, close to 300 people gathered with signs supporting marriage equality for gay couples. The “counter witness” followed a rally earlier at Woodruff Park for same-sex marriage supporters.
