USA, New Jersey: Governor Christie Will Comply with Supreme Court’s Order on Same-Sex Weddings

Saturday, October 19th, 2013

New Jersey Governor Chris ChristieNew Jersey Governor Chris Christie says he will comply with the state Supreme Court’s order that same-sex weddings can begin on Monday.

Edge Boston reports:

Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak says in a statement that the governor “firmly believes that this determination should be made by all the people of the state of New Jersey.” But he says the state Health Department will help towns carry out Friday’s state Supreme Court ruling. The court denied the Christie administration’s request to delay a lower-court order that the state recognize same-sex marriage beginning Monday. Same-sex marriages will begin within days in New Jersey after the state’s highest court ruled unanimously Friday to uphold a lower-court order that gay weddings must start Monday and to deny a delay that was sought by Gov. Chris Christie’s administration.

In related news, NOM’s Brian Brown activist judges blah blah blah.

Joe.My.God reports:

“It is extremely disappointing that the New Jersey Supreme Court has allowed the ruling of an activist judge to stand pending its appeal through the court system. The definition of marriage is something that should be decided by the people of New Jersey themselves, not by any judge or court. New Jerseyans should have the right to vote on this issue just as voters in nearly three dozen other states have done. In addition, the decision to allow same-sex ‘marriage’ to proceed even while the law is being tested in court is unfair both to the voters of the state and to same-sex couples themselves.”

Same old, same old.

Minnesota, USA: Today’s Marriage Equality Victory

Monday, May 13th, 2013

you tube bigWe watched the marriage equality debate live in the Minnesota Senate, and now we have a few follow-ups for you.

We’ll start with the Senate Leader’s speech on marriage equality, given just before the final vote was taken, brought to us by Joe.My.God:

Joe.My.God also has a great quote from openly gay Senator Scott Dibble:

“Minnesotans, when given a chance, understand that the values that unite us are stronger and so much more important than those that divide us. I am proud to be a Minnesotan today. Today good hard-working Minnesotans playing by the rules, trying to live a good life, contributing in so many ways to their communities will be treated fairly. For thousands of families, life will be better. We will be removing the barriers that they have had to the full joys that life has to offer. In doing so, we strengthen ourselves and we strengthen our democracy. When this is over, we will have left Minnesota a better place. That is why we’re here.”

Over at Towleroad.com, they have a video of the celebration that erupted just after the vote:

A crappy cell phone camera may not be great at capturing images, but it is perfectly capable of transmitting joy.

Over at NOM, Brian Brown predicted the end of the Democratic majority in Minnesota because of the vote. Joe.My.God reports:

Make no mistake, this vote will bring the demise of the DFL majority and end the careers of wayward Republicans in the Legislature once voters have their say. The people of Minnesota did not vote for gay marriage in 2012. They voted to maintain traditional marriage by maintaining the status quo. Our opponents bought a victory by claiming that marriage was not under threat of redefinition, but in fact they always intended to redefine it at the soonest possible moment. Legislators who voted to redefine marriage were foolish to do so. They cast a terrible vote that damages society, tells children they don’t deserve a mother and a father, and brands supporters of traditional marriage as bigots. We predict that this vote will be career ending for many legislators in Minnesota.”

Of course, Brown basically predicted failure for the bills in Minnesota, Delaware, and Illinois a week and a half ago. Lets see if we can prove him wrong in all three states!

What Marriage Equality Opponents Are Saying 4/26/13

Friday, April 26th, 2013

you tube bigWelcome to yet another edition of what our crazy right-wing opponents are saying about marriage equality and gay-rights.

Our friends over on the right wing are always fond of a good “gay marriage will destroy the world” story. Today’s comes from the UK. Gay Star News reports:

Society for the Protection of Unborn Children has sent leaflets to British homes in a way of spreading their anti-gay message. Titled ‘Stop David Cameron destroying Britain’s families’, the group argues legalizing same-sex marriage will have a devastating effect on children. They fear ‘children and teenagers at school will quickly learn about “gay marriage”’ and ‘gay relationships will be promoted to primary school children via storybooks’. ‘Being male or female will be meaningless, if any combination can get married,’ SPUC says. ‘Marriage will be reduced to gratifying your own personal desires.’

Sounds like they took a page from the National Organization for Marriage’s playbook, doesn’t it? speaking of the National Organization for Marriage, Brian Brown is pissed at the GOP Senators from Rhode Island. Joe.My.God reports:

“The Rhode Island bill does not create a new category of marriage for same-sex couples. Rather, it completely redefines marriage for all people in Rhode Island. For the politicians who refused to let the people of Rhode Island vote on marriage, this is not over! We intend to make sure that every Rhode Islander knows how their policymakers voted on this critical issue. We will hold the politicians accountable for their votes. Republicans, especially, will have to answer for abandoning marriage—a core position of the GOP platform.”

Good luck with that, since the entire Rhode Island GOP Senate caucus voted for the bill. Also in the US, the group Faith 2 Action just-released a crazy video comparing homosexuality to adultery. Queerty has the story:

Bigoted hate group Faith2Action made an incredibly low-budge YouTube video comparing homosexuality to adultery this week, and just as you’d suspect, none of it makes sense. For a group of people that adamantly hate the LGBT community, they sure know how to make a video look super-gay.

And finally, Scott Keyes at Think Progress has a great wrap up of the reasons the GOP thinks it should be legal to fire someone who is gay. My favorite?

2. LGBT people aren’t fired for their orientation in the US. Former Rep. Allen West (R-FL) dismissed the idea of a law making it illegal to fire someone for being gay because, as he explained, it’s not “a big issue” and “that don’t happen out here in the United States of America.”

Enjoy!

Hawaii, USA: State’s One GOP Senator Concedes Marriage Equality Will Pass; NOM Freaks Out

Saturday, February 2nd, 2013

HawaiiDid you now Hawaii’s state Senate had just one republican Senator? Neither did we. But apparently Senator Sam Slom has seen the writing on the wall on marriage equality. Zack Ford at Think Progress reports:

“Same sex marriage probably will pass this year. You’ve got a preponderance of Democrats who support it in both Houses, you’ve got the Congressional delegation, you’ve got our Governor!”

And Joe.My.God is reporting that Brian Brian at NOM is freaking out:

Fresh off electoral victories in November, gay marriage activists are pressing hard to pass a same-sex marriage bill in Hawaii this year — even though Hawaii’s civil unions law went into effect just a year ago. It is critical that we step up today. Polling has shown that the people of Hawaii don’t want same-sex marriage. But the pressure on politicians — from out-of-state activists and lobbyists flown in by the Human Rights Campaign all the way to President Obama himself — is growing intense.

Um, here’s the latest polling, just two days old – 55% in Hawaii now support marriage equality, while just 39% oppose it.

Looks like NOM’s facing a case of too many fires and not enough water. 🙂

France: NOM’s Brian Brown Says France Doesn’t Support “Redefining” Marriage

Monday, January 21st, 2013

National Organization for Marriage president Brian Brown, is back from his trip to Paris, where he gleefully participated with several hundred thousand people who converged at the Eiffel Tower last Sunday to protest the French president’s plan to legalize same-sex marriage and allow same-sex couples to adopt and conceive children.

The protest march started at three points across Paris, filling streets throughout the city as demonstrators walked more than 3 miles to the grounds of the Eiffel Tower. Paris police estimated the crowd at 340,000, making it one of the largest demonstrations in Paris since an education protest in 1984.

Brown called his participation in the protest “a blessing.”

France: NOM’s Brian Brown in France for Anti Marriage Equality Rally

Sunday, January 13th, 2013

National Organization for Marriage“A massive rebellion against gay marriage is brewing in France. I’m here now, and I’ll report to you first hand from the rally planned for Sunday. To read the news accounts in the U.S., you would think gay marriage is inevitable here. Like everywhere.

“That’s what they always say, right? Recognize that argument for what it is: a tactic to make you feel helpless and impotent and therefore submissive. To get you to give up and just submit to whatever they have planned. There are only two things we know for sure about the future: it hasn’t happened yet.

“And for those of us who are people of faith–we know that God is in charge. But to be here is to recognize something extraordinary is happening, something totally unpredicted when French President Francois Hollande set out to pass gay marriage: a massive popular rebellion.” – Hate group leader and Vatican stooge Brian Brown.

Buzzfeed Interviews NOM’s Brian Brown

Sunday, November 4th, 2012

Buzzfeed Interviews National Organization for Marriage's Brian BrownMitt Romney has spent virtually no time this year talking about his opposition to same-sex couples’ marriage rights, which face key tests in four state ballot measures Tuesday. But the leader of the national fight to, as he would put it, protect traditional marriage said he sees Romney’s election as an important part of that fight — and Romney as a steadfast ally in that cause.

“Mitt Romney supports marriage as the union of a man and a woman,” the president of the National Organization for Marriage, Brian Brown, told BuzzFeed Friday. Brown recalled the aftermath of the Massachusetts Supreme Court’s 2004 ruling to include gays and lesbians in civil marriage. “He was very strong, he spoke at rallies, he was strong the whole way through.”

Now Brown heads into Election Day with as much at stake as any conservative besides, perhaps, Romney himself. Brown heads the nation’s largest organization that seeks to stand, as many on both sides of the political spectrum see it, in the way of history, yelling, “Stop.”

Minnesota, USA: NOM Head, Gay Bishop Debate Marriage Equality Ban in Minneapolis

Friday, November 2nd, 2012

NOM Head, Gay Bishop Debate Minnesota Marriage Equality Ban in MinneapolisBrian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), and New Hampshire Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson were included in a panel debating Minnesota’s proposed marriage amendment.

The two men shared the stage with the Rev. Jerry McAfee of New Salem Missionary Baptist Church in North Minneapolis and Sarah Walker, a board member of Minnesotans United for all Families, the main group working to defeat the amendment which would define marriage as a heterosexual union. The panel was moderated by the Daily Circuit’s Kerri Miller.

NOM’s Brian Brown Denounces New DOMA Ruling

Friday, October 19th, 2012

National Organization for Marriage's Brian Brown Denounces New DOMA Ruling“This is yet another example of judicial activism and elite judges imposing their views on the American people, and further demonstrates why it is imperative for the U.S. Supreme Court to grant review in the currently pending DOMA cases as well as to the Proposition 8 case.

“The American people are entitled to a definitive ruling in support of marriage as the union of one man and one woman, as 32 states have determined through popular vote.”
