Three Interesting Moments From the Dan Savage/Brian Brown Dinner Debate

Thursday, August 23rd, 2012

Remember when popular sex columnist and gay marriage advocate Dan Savage spoke to the National High School Journalism Convention in Seattle, prompting some Christian students to walk out after he asserted that there is some “bullshit” in the Bible? Recall that Brian Brown, an opponent of gay marriage, responded by issuing a debate challenge, saying, “You want to savage the Bible? Christian morality? Traditional marriage? Pope Benedict? I’m here, you name the time and the place and let’s see what a big man you are in a debate with someone who can talk back.”

The debate has now happened. Video at the top of this post. Journalist Mark Oppenheimer served as moderator. The whole thing runs about an hour with ample time for each man to speak. Too many ideas were exchanged to summarize them all. Here are three moments I found noteworthy.

The Biblical And Homosexuality

Dan Savage pressed his interlocutor to explain why many Christians have no problem rejecting much of what’s in the Bible, but cannot bring themselves to conclude that it got homosexuality is wrong.

Thomas Roberts Asks NOM’s Brian Brown if Standing Against Equality is Exhausting

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

MSNBC’s Thomas Roberts got fed up with NOM’s Brian Brown at the end of his diatribe against same-sex marriage in New Hampshire.

Asked Roberts: “Is it sometimes just exhausting for you, and what the National Organization for Marriage does, to try to stand against the tide of equality? Is it exhausting?”

Freedom to Marry’s Wolfson Cleans NOM’s Clock

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Freedom to Marry’s Evan Wolfson and Brian Brown of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) faced off yesterday in a WABC debate over putting same-sex marriage to a voter referendum in New Jersey.

The more Brown repeats his idiotic talking points, the more their lack of substance becomes apparent, particularly when there’s an expert like Wolfson on hand to tear them to shreds.

Stossel Takes On NOM’s Brown on Gay Marriage

Friday, August 19th, 2011

John Stossel, host of Fox Business Network’s Stossel, on Thursday challenged NOM’s Brian Brown on gay marriage.

Brown, the president of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), the country’s most vociferous opponent of gay marriage, and nationally syndicated columnist David Harsanyi, a self-described libertarian, were Stossel’s guests on the segment.

“It is a mistake to allow government to define what marriage should be, gay or not. It should get out of the business of defining marriage at all and let people – it’s not a public good, it’s a private relationship that people should engage in without government,” Harsanyi told Stossel to the delight of the audience.

NOM’s Brian Brown: Marriage Equality Will “Normalize Pedophilia”

Friday, August 19th, 2011

Brian Brown, the president of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), has suggested that gay marriage will “normalize pedophilia.”

NOM, the nation’s most vociferous opponent of gay marriage, has insisted it is only concerned with preserving marriage as the union of a man and a woman, and harbors no animus towards gay men and lesbians.

But in a blog post titled NOM Marriage News, Brown asks whether the normalization of pedophilia will be a consequence of marriage equality. “When you knock over a core pillar of society like marriage, and then try to redefine Biblical views of marriage as bigotry, there will be consequences. Will one of the consequences be a serious push to normalize pedophilia?”

Thomas Roberts to NOM Head: Why Are Gay Couples Less Than You?

Friday, August 5th, 2011

MSNBC’s Thomas Roberts interviewed NOM’s Brian Brown and Marriage Equality USA’s John Lewis.

Brian thinks “Same-sex marriage is a big issue in this country.” Yes, it is. And, it’s getting better for our side every day. NOM is leading the GOP down a sink hole. Have at it, I say.

And, Thomas Roberts is having none of Brian’s hypocrisy. Brian seemed especially bitter today. He probably hasn’t recovered from New York.

NY: NOM, Righteously Angry That Opponents Spent $2.5 Million, Prepares to Spend $20 Million in State

Monday, July 4th, 2011

Brian Brown, NOMThe National Organization for Marriage (NOM) this week suggested gay marriage backers in New York bought six needed votes for a gay marriage law, then pledged to raise $20 million.

New York legalized gay marriage last month after four Republican senators and all but one Democrat, Ruben Diaz Sr. of the Bronx, voted in favor of a marriage bill heavily lobbied for by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Brian Brown, the president of NOM, the nation’s most vociferous opponent of giving gay and lesbian couples the right to marry, suggested GOP senators were bribed into supporting the legislation.

Daniel O’Donnell, Brian Brown Debate Marriage Equality on CNN

Monday, June 20th, 2011

During a segment about marriage equality on his CNN newscast on Saturday, out anchor Don Lemon hosted a debate between Daniel O’Donnell, who is co-sponsor of New York’s same-sex marriage bill and equality opponent Brian Brown, president of National Organization For Marriage.

Lemon asks Brown if he’s worried about the bill being passed, reminding him that 58% of New Yorkers support same-sex marriage. Brown contends that he saw similar polls in California and Maine and if New York voters have “a free and fair vote, they will vote to protect (marriage).”

Maggie Gallagher Steps Down – Sort of – From NOM Presidency

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

The anti-gay National Organization for Marriage announced Monday, April 19, that president Maggie Gallagher is stepping down from her post and will be replaced by former executive director Brian Brown.

“This move is in part a recognition of Brian Brown’s incredible record of achievement for the past three years in shepherding NOM’s growth, and in part a recognition of the increasing political profile we hope to build for NOM in 2010 and beyond,” Gallagher wrote in an e-mail to supporters, calling Brown a “brilliant young pro-family activist.”

The National Organization for Marriage has worked against marriage equality across the nation since 2007. NOM influenced the passage of Proposition 8 in California, unsuccessfully tried to ban same-sex marriage in Massachusetts, and assisted the overturning of Maine’s marriage equality law, to name just a few of their efforts.
