NY: Survey Says Central State Town Clerks Support Marriage Equality Law

New York Gay MarriageTown clerks in six Central New York counties all said they are complying with the state’s recently passed Marriage Equality Act and have no problems with issuing marriage licenses to gay couples.

The polled clerks – from the towns of Cazenovia, Clay, Cortlandville, New Haven, Oswego and Sterling — said it is their lawful obligation to grant the licenses and they have treated all couples the same since the law took effect in late July.

The elected officials were surveyed after Rose Marie Belforti, town clerk in the Cayuga County town of Ledyard, recently refused to issue a marriage license to a lesbian couple because of her religious beliefs. The couple put Ledyard officials on notice last week that they are considering taking legal action against the town and Belforti.
