USA: Chuck-Fil-A CEO Going Quiet About Marriage Equality Opposition

Monday, March 17th, 2014

Chick-fil-AWell, it’s not a turn-around, but maybe the best that could be hoped for, under the circumstances?

Joe.My.God reports:

“Every leader goes through different phases of maturity, growth and development and it helps by (recognizing) the mistakes that you make. And you learn from those mistakes. If not, you’re just a fool. I’m thankful that I lived through it and I learned a lot from it. Probably the elements that were stressful for me most is from our internal staff and from operators and how this may be affecting them. The bottom line is we have a responsibility here to keep the whole of the organization in mind and it has to take precedence over the personal expression and opinion on social issues.” – Chick-Fil-A CEO Dan Cathy

Which Corporations Aren’t Getting on the Marriage Equality Bandwagon?

Friday, March 29th, 2013

Urban OutfittersWhich corporations support marriage equality, and which ones are content to sit on the sidelines? Tumblr is forcing the issue. Queerty reports:

Others have remained silent on the issue, but a new Tumblr is forcing companies out of the closet. Brand Equality features dozens of brand logos stylized with the Human Rights Campaign’s red equal sign — giving the assumption that they support marriage equality. Brands have the option to say nothing and let the assumption ride; confirm their support; or request that their logo be removed, implying that they do not support marriage equality… these four brands asked to have their logos removed. Brand Equality has replaced their original comments (below) with the more equitable — “So, do these brands want to be removed? Or to replace the image sent in with a ‘neutral’ stance? Just let us know. This is all about transparency.”

So far, they include Exxon, Urban Outfitters, Walmart, and (of course) Chick-fil-A.

USA: Chick-fil-A’s Anti Gay Stance Didn’t Hurt Business; No Anti-Gay Donations in 2011?

Tuesday, January 29th, 2013

Chick-fil-AAccording to the Hollywood Gossip, Chick-fil-A, in the midst of the controversy over the company’s anti-gay policies, sales actually grew:

The company ended 2012 with $4.6 billion in sales, up 14 percent from $4.1 billion a year earlier, and it opened 96 news stores, four more than 2011. The company does not have to publicize its finances because it is privately owned, but made those figures available to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

In related news, Pink News reports that the company’s tax returns show no donations to anti -gay groups in 2011:

A gay rights advocacy group has said that, according to its most recent tax documents, Chick-fil-A has ceased giving money to groups opposed to equal marriage and gay rights. According to gay rights group Campus Pride, the 2011 IRS 990 filings for Chick-fil-A’s charitable arm, the WinShape Foundation, shows no sign that they had funded anti-gay groups.

So mixed news… and they keep popping up in new places – at least two new ones here in Sacramento in the last few months.

Parks and Rec’s Aziz Ansari Supports Marriage Equality in Jimmy Kimmel

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012

Parks and Recreation star Aziz Ansari showed off his support of marriage equality Monday while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Ansari was asked which foods he missed from his South Carolina hometown, and the always ribald comedian used it as a jumping-off point to talk about how he’s very “pro-gay marriage” and “pro-delicious chicken sandwich,” and thus Chick-fil-A’s antigay ties presents a conundrum for the comic.

“At this point, why is anyone against gay marriage?” Ansari asked Kimmel. “You know you’re going to lose. You know you’re on the wrong side of things. These are the same people that didn’t want women to vote, that didn’t want black guys to play football. What was the last thing they were opposed to? Interracial relationships?

USA: Did Chick-fil-A Just Reverse Its Stance on Contributions to Anti-Gay Groups?

Wednesday, September 19th, 2012

Did Chick-fil-A Just Reverse Its Stance on Contributions to Anti-Gay Groups?Could Chick-fil-A be turning over a new leaf?

A Chicago-based lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) advocacy group reports that the restaurant chain — which was at the epicenter of a media firestorm this summer after its president confirmed his company’s anti-gay stance — has agreed to cease donations to right-wing groups that oppose same-sex marriage.

In a press release, the Civil Rights Agenda (TCRA) cites Alderman Moreno as confirming that Chick-fil-A officials declared in an internal document that the company “will treat every person equally, regardless of sexual orientation.” TCRA reportedly served as an advisor to Alderman as he negotiated these concessions with Chick-fil-A executives.

California, USA: Chick-fil-A Vandal Comes Forward

Thursday, August 9th, 2012

Chick-fil-aManny Castro, the L.A.-based artist who claimed responsibility for the graffiti spray-painted on the side of a Torrance, California Chick-fil-A last week, has not been arrested for what he did despite his coming forward, and offers a statement to the Huffington Post about why he did it:

My statement painted on the side of the Chik-Fil-A in Torrance was not born out of hate. It was born out of frustration. It was meant to further a discussion about tolerance and acceptance. My Facebook wall was simply not large enough to do this. Contrary to popular belief, I am a proud Christian and I wholly subscribe to the verse: “Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone.”
