Australia Marriage Equality Conscience Vote Called Highly Likely

Saturday, August 2nd, 2014

Sydney, AustraliaIt’s looking like we might get another vote on Australia marriage equality shortly – this time a “conscience vote”.

Pink News reports:

According to lone Liberal Democrat MP David Leyonhjelm, who first announced he would introduced a same-sex marriage bill last month, it is “highly likely” the government will allow MPs a free vote on the issue. Senator Leyonhjelm told the Sydney Morning Herald that he has sped up the process, while he previously only planned to introduce the bill after a conscience vote was secured. He said: “I have heard from Liberal senators that a conscience vote is highly likely.” Despite 72% of Australians supporting marriage equality, with just 21% opposed, Liberal Prime Minister Tony Abbott remains staunchly opposed.

Amazing that a party can oppose something with 72% support. But then again, we see similar things here in the US – look at sensible gun legislation and the GOP.

Australia: Abbott Might Allow Conscience Vote on Marriage Equality

Friday, October 11th, 2013

Australia Prime Minister Tony AbbottAustralia’s Prime Minister hinted that he might be willing to allow his members a conscience vote on marriage equality.

Pink News reports:

Equal marriage remains banned at a federal level in Australia and efforts to legalise the measure failed in the Australian Parliament in September 2012. But Mr Abbott suggests there is nothing to stop the Federal Parliament from reconsidering the issue. With Labor and the Greens committed to marriage equality, and several prominent Liberal MPs in favour of a conscience vote, the government fully expects the issue to come back before the new Parliament.

Is that a light at the end of the conservative tunnel?

Ms Gambaro said she had become infuriated with the issue being a political football.

Palmer United Party leader Clive Palmer made the announcement yesterday. ‘The Palmer United Party believes issues such as same-sex marriage, the abortion debate and euthanasia should all come down to the candidates’ individual position on the issue,’ Palmer said.

Australia: Young Liberals Call for Marriage Equality Conscience Vote

Saturday, February 2nd, 2013

Sydney, Australia Opera HouseThe Liberal Party’s youth wing wants the party to allow members to vote their consciences instead of the party line on marriage equality, Gay Star News reports:

Australian advocates for marriage equality have welcomed support from today’s federal Young Liberals Conference for a conscience vote for all Liberal senators and MPs, saying it increases pressure on opposition leader Tony Abbott to allow all his MPs to vote according to their personal beliefs. At the Young Liberal federal conference in Hobart this afternoon a motion from the Victorian division in favor of a conscience vote gained two-thirds support.

As always, it’s the younger folks leading the way on equality.

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

England, United Kingdom: Labour to Have Free Vote on Marriage EqualityThe Labour Party has signalled that it will now allow its MPs to have a free vote on the government’s equal marriage plans despite previously indicating that it would impose a three-line whip.

An unnamed Labour MP has told the New Statesman that the move does not constitute a U-turn. He said: “The three-line whip only applied to civil ceremonies. Now the government has agreed to allow gay marriages in religious buildings, we will hold a free vote.”

Victoria, Australia: No Conscience Vote on Marriage Equality, Premier Says

Saturday, September 22nd, 2012

Australia: No Conscience Vote on Marriage Equality, Victoria Premier SaysVICTORIA will not follow in the footsteps of others states pushing to legalise same-sex marriage, with Premier Ted Baillieu refusing to allow Liberal MPs a conscience vote on the issue.

The decision puts Mr Baillieu at odds with his New South Wales Liberal counterpart, Barry O’Farrell, who last week confirmed he would grant a free vote on a gay marriage bill to be drafted by a group of cross-party MPs later this year.

In Victoria, a private member’s bill on the issue was introduced by Greens MP Sue Pennicuik in June, but would require broader political support to pass the Parliament, where the Coalition controls both houses.

Australia: In Online Forum, Gillard Calls for Marriage Equality Conscience Vote This Year

Saturday, July 21st, 2012

Australia Marriage EqualitySuicide prevention, obesity, gay marriage and the meaning of happiness were just a handful of issues the Prime Minister was quizzed on in a virtual chatroom this morning.

One of the more challenging questions came from Shane Bazzi, a 25-year-old Sydneysider who topped the poll on the OurSay.org website with more than 12,700 votes. He asked the Prime Minister to explain her opposition to gay marriage given she is as an atheist and leader of a “self-described socially progressive party”.

“I don’t think that heterosexual relationships are more valued than same-sex relationships,” the Prime Minister replied. “I think people who are in loving, commited relationships, all of those relationships should be valued. I think my relationship should be valued and I’m not married.” She said her view about gay marriage was based on its cultural status and differed from Mr Bazzi’s. “These are very individual personal perspectives on the world…This should be a conscience vote in Labor. We will have a vote on changing the marriage act by the end of the year,” she said.
