Washington, USA: Florist Who Turned Away Gay Couple Countersues

Thursday, May 16th, 2013

WashingtonRemember the florist who turned away her long-term gay clients because they wanted flowers for their wedding day? Now she’s suing the state. LGBTQ Nation reports:

Attorneys for Alliance Defending Freedom, a legal ministry, filed suit on behalf of Stutzman Thursday in Benton County Superior Court, the Tri-City Herald reported. “Everyone knows that plenty of florists are willing to assist in same-sex ceremonies, so the state has no reason to force Barronelle to violate her deeply held beliefs,” Senior Legal Counsel Dale Schowengerdt said in a statement.

Whenever there’s a lawsuit like this, scratch the surface and you’ll find the odious Alliance Defending Freedom (formerly the Alliance Defense Fund) behind it. One more thing to thank Arizona for.

Washington, USA: Gay Couple Sues Florist Who Refused to Provide Wedding Flowers

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

WashingtonOn the heels of a lawsuit filed by the state Attorney General, a gay couple is also suing Arlene’s Flowers after the florist turned them away because they are gay. Edge Boston reports:

The lawsuit is in response to a March 1 incident in which Barronelle Stutzman refused to provide flowers for Robert Ingersoll and Curt Freed’s wedding, despite the two men being longtime patrons of her shop – Arlene’s Flowers and Gifts in Richland, about 200 miles southeast of Seattle… “The refusal to sell flowers to the couple is a disturbing reminder of the unequal treatment that gay men and women have experienced over the years,” said ACLU of Washington legal director Sarah Dunne in a statement. “When a business serves the general public, the business owner’s religious beliefs may not be used to justify discrimination.”

Washington, USA: Florist Who Refused Service to Gay Couple Faces Possible Second Lawsuit

Thursday, April 11th, 2013

WashingtonYesterday, we reported on Arlene’s Flowers in Washington State – the State’s Attorney General had filed a lawsuit against the florist after she refused to provide flowers for a gay wedding. Now the couple themselves have also threatened to sue. Joe.My.God reports:

After five weeks of biting their tongues, a gay couple in Richland, Washington, is making a loaded offer to a florist who refused to sell them flowers based her biblical belief that “marriage is between a man and a woman.” Robert Ingersoll and Curt Freed’s lawyers, working with the legal powerhouse at the ACLU of Washington, sent a letter today to Arlene’s Flowers owner Baronelle Stutzman saying she has two options: (1) She can vow to never again discriminate in her services for gay people, write an apology letter to be published in the Tri-City Herald, and contribute $5,000 to a local LGBT youth center, or (2) she can get sued for violating the Washington State Civil Rights Act.

Predictably the right is up-in-arms over the suits.

Washington, USA: Lawsuit Filed Against Anti Marriage Equality Florist

Wednesday, April 10th, 2013

Attorney General Bob FergusonA florist who refused to provide flowers for a gay couples’ wedding is being sued by the state Attorney General Bob Ferguson, LGBTQ Nation reports:

The complaint was filed in Benton County, Wash., on Tuesday against Barronelle Stutzman, owner of Arlene’s Flowers and Gifts in Richland. The lawsuit is in response to a March 1 incident where she refused service to longtime customer Robert Ingersoll. Attorney General Bob Ferguson had sent a letter on March 28 asking Stutzman to comply with the state’s anti-discrimination law, but said Stutzman’s attorneys responded Monday saying she would challenge any effort by the state to enforce the law.

In related news, an Etsy.com guest book cover designer is refusing to work with a lesbian couple because of her Christian beliefs. Queerty reports:

Jami Howard was searching for guest book covers for her own same-sex nuptials when she happened upon Paledesigns, which featured Mickey ears and balloons on happy couples. What started as cordial back and forth with the owner, identified on the shop page as Jessica Fong, went awry when Howard revealed that she had a same-sex partner… “After talking with my pastor and praying about the situation, I decided that I shouldn’t design your guestbook for you. Please know that I did take this into much thought though. Because I am a Christian and I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, I feel that designing a customized guestbook for you two will be against my belief and will mean that who I am and my business supports gay marriages.”

I always feel a little conflicted about these stories, and a little sympathetic toward the owners. But I’ve found a useful trick – substitute the word “black” or “mexican” (or any other ethnicity of your choosing) for the word gay. Then see how these statements sound.
