How I Changed My Mind About Marriage Equality

Sunday, March 22nd, 2015

J. Nathaniel McWilliamsI am a 33-year-old Christian man who happens to be gay. My orientation is not what I ever asked for, but is merely my reality. Although I have opposed same-sex marriage in the past, I have recently realized that it is good for Alabama and the nation as a whole. I wish to address a few issues that, I hope, can help my more conservative neighbors better understand homosexuality and the issue of same-sex marriage.

Before I can speak to my own sexuality, I must first define what “sex” in “sexuality” actually is. People often perceive the word to be a reference to the sex act. For anyone to even begin to understand LGBT issues, one must first understand that “sex” in “sexuality” refers to gender identity, and not about one’s sexual acts.

The ambiguity of this word has led to an unnecessary confusion when it comes to matters involving gay people. With this being realized, a person can avert from an unnecessary distraction and, hopefully, understand my story. I was born and raised in Alabama to a conservative Christian family. I witnessed two different approaches when it came to matters of faith and both condemned homosexuality. My mother saw faith by the “the jot and tittle” while my father sought Scripture’s broader meaning.

Saudi Arabian Man Sentenced to Three Years, 450 Lashes for Being Gay

Thursday, July 24th, 2014

Saudi Arabia - Google MapsA man in Saudi Arabia was just sentenced to three years and 450 lashes for the crime of being gay, reports:

Saudi Arabia has sentenced a man to three years in prison and 450 lashes for “the practise of homosexuality,” after attempting to arrange to meet another man using Twitter, reports LGBTQ Nation. Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transexual Rights UAEArabic newspaper Al-Watan said that “the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice…tracked down the owner of the account” of the man who was trying to arrange sex with another man. The man’s phone, which contained pornographic images, was also confiscated.

Prison for being gay is harsh enough, but to order a man to be whipped FOUR HUNDRED AND FIFTY TIMES is simply barbaric.

China: Gay Man Sues Government for Recognition of Marriage Equality Group

Sunday, March 30th, 2014

Great Wall of ChinaAfter China denied his application to register his group, Same-Sex Love Assistance Network, as an NGO, a gay man has decided to sue. reports:

The LGBT activist, Xiang Xiaohan, is the first gay man to do so. Xiaohan had attempted to register his group, Same-Sex Love Assistance Network, as a non-governmental organization (NGO) but his application was denied. In response, Xiaohan filed a defamation lawsuit in February but the case was thrown out of court earlier this month.

The BBC reports: Xiang Xiaohan filed the lawsuit in the provincial capital, Changsha, after the Hunan government turned down his application to register his organisation. In a written reply to him, the local government said homosexuality had no place in Chinese traditional culture and “the building of spiritual civilisation” – a catchphrase in modern China for what many believe is the party’s indoctrination. “I believe what the government said [in the reply] defames the reputation of the gay and lesbian community in China, and I want them to issue a written apology,” said Mr Xiang.

It’s a step forward in China, not historically known for LGBT rights.

USA, Alabama: Why the State is Getting Sued Over Its Marriage Equality Ban

Thursday, February 13th, 2014

Alabama mapThe details behind the marriage equality lawsuit will break your heart if you have one. Unfortunately, too many in the state don’t seem to.

SDGLN reports:

Paul Hard rushed to the hospital after learning that his husband had been in a car wreck. He sent a text message to other family members: “David in wreck, in the ER, Pray.” When Hard arrived at the hospital, a receptionist refused to give him any information about his husband, David Fancher. He was told he was not a member of Fancher’s “family” and that gay marriages weren’t recognized in Alabama. After a half hour of inquiries, a hospital orderly finally told Hard, “Well, he’s dead.” Paul’s knees fell out from under him. He reached out for support, but the orderly stepped away.

The indignity didn’t stop at the hospital. A funeral home director cited Alabama law in insisting that the death certificate indicate Fancher was never married – even though Fancher and Hard were legally married in Massachusetts, but lived in Alabama.

Disgusting the way he was treated at the bleakest time in his life by people who should have known better. Compassion costs nothing.

USA Colorado: Anti Gay Pastor Arrested for Robbing Gay Man, Impersonating Police Officer

Wednesday, January 29th, 2014

Pastor Michael AbromovichA pastor for Set Free Ministries was arrested after “arresting” a gay man, stealing his belongings and pretending to be a police officer. reports:

Pastor Michael Abromovich set up a post on Craigslist as “Mike”, advertising for gay sex at a local motel. When one man answered the ad and arrived at Abromovich’s room, Abromovich slammed the man against the wall and handcuffed him, claiming to be a U.S. Marshall all the while holding him at gunpoint with what eventually turned out to be a paintball gun. Abromovich then searched the man and took his iPad, iPhone, cash, debit card, and car keys as “evidence” that would be “sent back to the lab.” Abromovich was eventually stopped in Phoenix for a traffic violation. When he flashed a badge to the officers, they became suspicious and investigated further, discovering that Abromovich was wanted in Colorado Springs. He has since been extradited to Colorado Springs and investigations continue into whether there were more victims.

Simply bizarre… what’s going on in this guy’s head?

USA, Texas: Galveston Man Files Lawsuit Seeking to Overturn Marriage Equality Ban

Wednesday, July 3rd, 2013

Texas mapYet another lawsuit springing from last week’s US Supreme Court ruling striking down section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act. The Dallas Voice reports:

Domenico Nuckols, 60, said he believes that he will prevail because of last week’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling striking down the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which included the same definition of marriage. “It’s going to be an uphill battle, but I fired the first shot,” Nuckols said. The same-sex rights group Equality Texas was unaware of any similar lawsuits since the court decision, said Chuck Smith, executive director. A section of the state Constitution’s Bill of Rights reads, “Marriage in this state shall consist only of the union of one man and woman.”

Amazing how fast things are progressing. Mr. Nickols appears to be operating on his own without support from any of the local or national gay rights groups.

Brazil: Gay Man Stages Flash Mob to Propose to Partner

Tuesday, March 19th, 2013

you tube bigWe love this whole phenomenon – in Brazil, a gay man wanted to propose to his partner. So what better way than a flash mob? Queerty reports:

A nervous Brazilian man enlisted the help of a flash mob to help him propose to his boyfriend. According to a note on the video’s YouTube page (at least according to Google Translate’s translation from Portuguese, anyway), “F * F was asked to help in a flash mob for a marriage proposal, and there was no doubt that we would accept. It was a very nice gesture that will be stored forever in our memories… We wish all the happiness in the world to the couple!”

Brazil: Gay Man Wins Paternity Leave

Saturday, September 1st, 2012

Gay Man Wins Paternity Leave in BrazilFor the first time ever, a Brazilian court has granted paternity leave to a gay man who just adopted a child with his partner.

Normally Brazilian fathers are only given five days off work after becoming parents, while mothers receive four months off, but a Brazilian court found that it was discriminatory for a gay couple to receive less combined parental leave than a heterosexual couple.

As a result Lucimar da Silva will become the first Brazilian man to receive the same parental leave as a woman.

New York, USA: Father’s Will Says Gay Man Must Marry Woman to Inherit

Monday, August 20th, 2012

Father's Will Says Gay Man Must Marry Woman to Inherit in ManhattanA gay Manhattan man is fighting his father’s will, which specifies that he must marry a woman for his children to get his money.

Frank Mandelbaum, who died in 2007, instructed in his will that his son Robert Mandelbaum must be married to the mother of his children within six months of their birth, otherwise the children get none of his money.

Robert, a Manhattan Criminal Court Judge, argues that he married his husband Jonathan O’Donnell shortly after their 16-month-old son Cooper’s birth via a surrogate, entitling the child to a portion of his father’s estate. He stated that O’Donnell is the only “mother” Cooper knows, the New York Post reported.
