Singapore: Only 21% Favor Marriage Equality, New Poll Says

Monday, August 26th, 2013

titleA new survey out of Singapore paints a picture of a very homophobic country.

Gay Star News reports:

The survey found 37% of those surveyed said they rejected ‘gay lifestyles,’ while 27% felt neutral on the issue. Only 26% said they were accepting of a ‘gay lifestyle.’ On the issue of same-sex marriage Singaporeans were even less supportive, with 55% opposed and only 21% in favor of them.

It looks like Singapore has a long way to go for full marriage equality.

Lessons Learned From a Bigot

Monday, August 12th, 2013

Michael KnaapenYesterday, my husband and I took a bus to the Washington Ethical Society, a local progressive church, to hear Holocaust survivor Estelle Laughlin give a talk about her childhood before, during, and after her internment in the Majdanek and Czestochowa concentration camps.

We boarded the bus a block from home and filed to the back, where two seats were available for us to sit side by side. I asked John if he wanted to sit by the window – he’s very curious and prefers the window seat – but he declined so I could enjoy the view. I draped my arm around his shoulders and gazed at the passing buildings; he leaned into me while he wrote an email on his phone; we passed many minutes in the gentle hum of the cool bus, sunlight streaming in, everything very much at peace.

Then a man boarded and walked towards a seat directly behind us. He visibly recoiled when he saw us, and as he passed we heard the chilling, unmistakable epithet: “faggot.”

Seriously? Our semi-regular round-up of the crazy (and often unintentionally hilarious) things that anti-gay folks are saying about marriage equality and the LGBT community.

Today, we start in the UK with Labour MSP Elaine Smith, who doesn’t want to be called a homophobe just because she won’t let gays and lesbians marry Pink News reports:

Speaking at a Scotland for Marriage event – the Scottish anti-gay campaign group against equal marriage – she said: “As a legislator, I intend to vote against this bill and I believe that I am in tune with the wishes of the majority of my constituents. “I certainly don’t believe that I’m homophobic. However, I have no doubt that I will be made to suffer for my views on this issue and by voting against I will undoubtedly be labelled homophobic.”

If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it’s probably a homophobe.

Next, we’ll travel down under, where Australian senator Cory Bernardi is alarmed about marriage equality. Dot429 reports:

Australian senator Cory Bernardi reaffirmed his belief that marriage equality will lead to legalizing polygamy and bestiality, particularly in light of the Polyaction Armory Lobby’s petition, which has received 25 signatures. “If we go back to what I suggested in the Parliament when the same-sex marriage debate came up, there is actually now a petition being put together for the Parliament by green activists to recognize multi-member unions,” Bernardi said in an interview with the Australian publication The Age. “Now I said that would happen. It’s happening. We haven’t even taken the first step. I think there should be alarm. If you’re going to redefine a word to satisfy demands of a minority then you are going to face continuing demands in that space.”

Run! The polygamists are coming! The polygamists are coming!

And nearby, in the Philippines, Archbishop Oscar Cruz had an interesting offer for gays and lesbians who want to marry. Gay Star News reports:

‘May a lesbian marry a gay man? My answer is “yes” because in that instance the capacity to consummate the union is there. The anatomy is there. The possibility of conception is there,’ Archbishop Oscar Cruz said at a church forum yesterday, Philippine Daily Inquirer reports. Filipina LGBT rights activist Angie Umbac told Gay Star News she is ‘speechless’ at the comments of the Archbishop, who is a member of the powerful Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines.

I guess the idea is that the holy sacredness of marriage will overcome the evil gayness of the pasrtners, and they will magically become a heterosexual couple?

Albania: Parliament Passes Gay Hate Crime Laws

Albania - Google Maps

from Google Maps

Some good news out of Albania – the country’s Parliament just approved protections for the LGBT community. Gay Star News reports:

Albania amended its criminal code and put hate crimes against sexual orientation and gender identity on par with an offense against gender, race, ethnicity, religious belief, disability and so on. It also passed a new law punishing the dissemination of homophobic information through any means (including the internet) by a fine and up to two years imprisonment.

Nice to see a homophobia propaganda ban instead of a homosexuality propaganda one, for a change.

Seriously? Marriage Equality Opponents Sound Off – 4/29/13

Monday, April 29th, 2013

UKIP LogoWe’ve got a couple new ones for you today. First off, from the UK, a couple more homophobes in the UKIP party. Gay Star News reports:

‘Sure most Gay folk will realize they r [SIC] being used by forces of evil in attempt to upset UKIP progress’, tweeted Rose, who is hoping to be elected next week local to represent Ripley West and Heage ward in Derbyshire Council. He also stated ‘UKIP is not concerned with Gayness’, while in an apparent reference to gay sex, he clarified that ‘sordid frightfulness is ok with consenting adults’. Reilly, of the Newry and Mourne District Council in Northern Ireland said he agreed with Winston McKenzie, an unsuccessful UKIP MP candidate who said he objects to gay adoption as it is like throwing kids to the ‘dogs’.

Just to recap, gays are dogs being used by the forces of evil to trip up the UKIP. Got it.

In further UKIP news, the party sent out a flyer that appears to be both homophobic and biphobic Pink news reports:

Seeking to promote UK Independence Party (UKIP) candidate David Nixon for the Staffordshire ward of Stone Rural in Thursday’s local elections, the leaflet, which was sent to PinkNews by a reader, lists several factually incorrect statements by the Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child (SPUC), an anti-abortion lobby group which is opposed to equal marriage. The statements include: “Explicit sex education is occurring in our children’s schools. When the ‘Gay Marriage Bill’ becomes law, explicit ‘Homosexual Sex Education’ will have to be taught to keep schools within the law of the 2010 Equality Bill.” The leaflet illustrated a cartoon of a young boy holding a placard which said: “Rights for Bi-Sexuals We demand the right to marry With (at least) one man and one woman.”

In all of the marriage equality rallies I’ve been to and all the ones I’ve seen online, I have never, ever, seen a sign that said that we wanted the right to marry “at least” one man and one woman. They are so obsessed with polygamy. Makes you wonder…

Pink News also reports that the UKIP party leaders have condemned the flyer. So that’s something.

Finally, Joe.My.God reports on free Republic founder Jim Robinson’s rants about Pres. Obama, the Democrats, and homosexuality:

“When your godless Marxist president and his thuggish fascist cabinet officers and his entire godless liberty-hating socialist democrat party and sicko sycophant complicit leftist mainstream media and the god-hating, constitution-twisting black-robed socialist liberal activist judges continue conspiring to promote homosexualism and perversion as not only normal but a healthy, wholesome, desirable activity and way of life and then force it into the curriculum of even our youngest school children, that is tyranny! “When your constitution-loathing, Liberty-hating Marxist president and his constitution-loathing fascist cabinet thugs declare that the president can pick and choose which laws to enforce and which he can ignore, that is tyranny! And we the liberty-loving American citizens, my friends, are armed to the teeth and we will remain armed to the teeth and we will remain vigilant and ready. Coiled like a rattlesnake and ready to strike. DON’T TREAD ON ME!!”

And yes, he looks exactly like you’d expect them to look – a mustached white heavyset redneck in a baseball cap. Joe points out helpfully that Mr. Robinson writes his antigovernment rants from his own government supplied wheelchair.

“Keep your government hands off my Medicare.” Typical.

France: Gays Face Increased Homophobia; Putin Warns France On Adoptions

Saturday, April 27th, 2013

ParisWe have a couple new stories coming out of France today relating to the marriage equality fight there. First off, Dot429 reports on the rise of homophobia in the country:

There is no more taboo to openly claim extreme positions against LGBT people. As a result, calls to the national association “SOS homophobia” have been multiplied by three over the last year. “Homophobia is being legitimized, but I want to remind everyone that it remains a crime in this country. Being homophobic cannot be considered as freedom of speech!” Elodie Brun, coordinator for Montpellier’s Gay Pride Association told 429Magazine. She argues that people guilty of homophobia should be clearly condemned.

She says she’s not really surprised about the several attacks towards gay bars and couples that happened over the last month in France, since she has observed an increase in homophobic behaviors. “I didn’t think we could come to this in 2013 and I’m worried for all homosexuals living in France. I have the feeling a drama could happen at any time.”

It’s strange to see this happening in France, a country known for its openness in all matters sexual. At least one mayor has already decided to defy the law:

Even if the first same-sex marriages will be celebrated in France in June, a mayor claimed he will go against the law. Jean-Claude Massiou, from the UMP party, said he will refuse to marry gay couples, as “a wedding must be between a man and a woman.” Mayor of a town called Abjat-sur-Bandiat, Massiou maintains that he has nothing against gays and lesbians: “I will explain this to them gently, without aggressivity. It’s not homophobia or anything like that.”

In other news, Russian Pres. Vladimir Putin’s warning France that Russia may block adoptions of Russian children by French citizens if the marriage equality bill becomes law. Radio Free Europe reports:

President Vladimir Putin says Russia could change its agreements for the adoption of Russian children with France and other Western countries that are legalizing gay marriage. Speaking at a meeting with lawmakers on April 26, Putin said he considers it “fully correct to make changes” to existing agreements. Putin added that other states had to respect Russia’s “cultural traditions and ethical norms.” Valentina Matviyenko, the speaker of Russia’s Federation Council — the upper chamber of parliament — told the meeting that amendments to the adoption agreement with France are now being prepared.

Russia has already banned US adoptions of Russian children over an unrelated dispute.

Italy: Activists Plan Mass Gay Wedding; TV Presenter Makes Anti-Gay Remarks

Wednesday, March 13th, 2013

RomeA few updates this morning out of Italy. First off, Artcigay, Italy’s gay rights organization, has announced plans for a mass gay wedding, Dot429 reports:

In a symbolic move, a leading LGBT organization in Italy on Friday will hold a mass gay wedding to demonstrate for marriage equality in the Southern European country. According to a statement from Bologna’s Arcigay, the group announced the symbolic gay marriage ceremony to continue to push for LGBT rights in the country. It also coincides with the opening of the new Italian Parliament’s session and the group is planning to “marry” over a few dozen couples in order to continue to pressure lawmakers to create LGBT equality, stating that the country lacks “pro-gay laws.”

Also in Italy, Gay Star News reports on a TV presenter who’s getting flack for anti-gay remarks:

On the show, it featured a story of a gay teen suing his father who did not want to give him any money. Commenting on the boy’s life, Dalla Chiesa said: ‘Being openly gay is not always right, because some people don’t like it. ‘I tolerate gay people, but I also think that a straight family is better than a gay one. A child deserves a mother and a father.’

South Africa: New Party Leader is Pro Gay Rights

Tuesday, February 26th, 2013

The female leader of South Africa’s Newest political party is actively supportive of LGBT rights and opposes homophobia, Gay Star News says:

Mamphela Ramphele, leader of South Africa’s newest political party, Agang (Sotho for ‘Build’), stated she fully backs LGBT rights and is dedicated to fight homophobia. Ramphele, a revered anti apartheid activist, announced last week (18 February) on the formation of a new political party and called upon South Africans to ‘join me on a journey to build the country of our dreams’.

Another step in the right direction.

Colorado, USA: Cake Shop Refuses Service to Gay Couple

Saturday, July 21st, 2012

Colorado Cake Shop Refuses Service to Gay CoupleYesterday afternoon, 28-year-old Dave Mullins and 31-year-old Charlie Craig stopped by Lakewood’s Masterpiece Cakeshop to order their wedding reception cake — what they hoped would be a rainbow-layered masterpiece decked out in teal and red frosting (their ceremony colors).

Although they’ll be reciting their vows in Provincetown, Massachusetts, in September, the couple plans to celebrate with a reception for friends and family in Denver in October. But after bakery owner Jack Phillips listened to their request, they say, he refused it. His business doesn’t create cakes for gay weddings.

“It was the most awkward, surreal, very brief encounter,” Mullins says. “We got up to leave, and to be totally honest, I said, ‘Fuck you and your homophobic cake shop.’ And I may or may not have flipped him off.”

Ukraine: Anti-Gay Sentiment Rising

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

Homophobic sentiment and violence against Ukraine’s gay community are on the rise despite increasing efforts to promote tolerance in the conservative ex-Communist nation, advocacy groups said Wednesday.

The community was forced to cancel its first ever gay pride parade in the capital, Kiev, in May due to concerns activists would be physically attacked by radical groups. After the cancellation, two gay leaders were violently beaten.

Oleksandr Zinchenkov, head of the Our World gay rights advocacy group, told a news conference Wednesday that Ukrainians have been increasingly hostile toward gays and lesbians in recent months.
