USA: Catholic Lay Group Asks Knights of Columbus to Stop Fighting Marriage Equality

Friday, November 23rd, 2012

The Catholics United Education Fund (CUEF), a lay Catholic advocacy group, delivered a petition containing about 7,500 signatures to the Knights of Columbus on Tuesday, asking the Catholic fraternal organization to stop using its money to oppose same-sex marriage.

CUEF submitted the petition to the Knights’ headquarters in New Haven. CUEF claims that Knights of Columbus spent more than $600,000 opposing same-sex marriage in the last election cycle.

James Salt, Executive Director of CUEF said anti-gay lobbying by the Knights is alienating younger Catholics, causing them to leave the faith.

Thanks to joe.my.god for bringing this to our attention – just goes to show you what the real priorities of the Catholic Church leaders are:

Freedom to Marry on the Knights of Columbus's Fight Against Marriage Equality

USA: Catholic Knights of Columbus One of NOM’s Primary Funders

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

Catholic Knights of Columbus One of National Organization for Marriage's Primary FundersA new report from Equally Blessed, an organization of Catholic LGBT equality advocates, shows that The Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization, has been one of the primary sponsors of efforts to ban or oppose same-sex marriage, including substantial donations to the National Organization for Marriage. In fact, the organization has donated more than $15.8 million either directly toward anti-equality campaigns or toward groups that actively oppose the freedom to marry. Here’s a breakdown of The Knights’ financial structure and extensive anti-gay giving over the past eight years:

The Knights of Columbus has 1.8 million members (all men), some $85 billion in life insurance policies, and $16.9 billion in assets, but it pays no taxes as a 501(c)(8) fraternal organization.

Of the Knights’ five separate 501(c)(3) charitable organizations, two are wholly dedicated to anti-equality and anti-abortion services.

CO: Knights of Columbus Affirms Opposition to Marriage Equality

Friday, August 5th, 2011

Delegates setting the resolutions for the Knights of Columbus (K of C) again voted to defend traditional marriage and the “sacredness of human life” at the group’s 129th Supreme Convention held in Denver this week. With both controversial issues seen as the most important topics to many of the delegates, some secular and Catholic groups are concerned their agenda is a step in the wrong direction for civil rights.

“As faithful Catholics and Knights of Columbus, we know that among the most important tasks ahead of us is the need to shape our culture according to Gospel values and to bring the Christian message of hope to all,” said Carl A. Anderson, supreme knight and chairman of the board of Knights of Columbus, in his annual report.

“I don’t have to tell you that in many ways, society has lost track of the things that are most important: the sacredness of human life, and the right of every child, not only to be born, but to be raised by a mother and a father.”

Knights of Columbus Donated $1.4 Million to NOM in 2009

Monday, September 20th, 2010

The Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal society founded in New Haven in 1881, does a lot of good work. In a report detailing its charitable giving during 2009, the organization noted that while the “Knights and their families are hardly immune to the economic downturn,” they had once again furthered their proud 128-year tradition of service – a tradition including “helping the widows and orphans of the late 19th century” and “providing coats to poor, cold children.”

Add to that list a donation of a whopping $1.4 million in 2009 to the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), a nonprofit group dedicated to fighting same-sex marriage through the ballot initiative system in California, Maine and other states. While NOM hasn’t yet made public its 2009 fundraising numbers, the amount of charitable contributions it received in 2008 totaled approximately $2.9 million.

The NOM donation eclipses what the Knights’ Supreme Council spent on some of its own charitable programs – such as its new effort supporting food banks or its total spending on education initiatives – in the same year, much to the outrage of some observers, including Catholic groups.
