UK: Conservatives Push Cameron Again to Abandon Marriage Equality; Others Want Gay Weddings at Westminster Chapel

Monday, March 18th, 2013

Westminster PalaceA couple competing stories out of the United Kingdom today.

First off, anti-gay tories are pushing again to have the party abandon its pledge on marriage equality. Pink News reports:

Several Conservative MPs have called on David Cameron to end his support for progressive policies such as equal marriage. MPs Peter Bone, Douglas Carswell, John Glen, Anne McIntosh and Bob Stewart belong to Conservative Grassroots, which was set up in the wake of February’s Commons vote of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill. MPs present in the video were among 136 Tory MPs that voted against the bill with another 135 choosing not to vote at all. The video, featuring past and present Tory party activists, was released to coincide with the Conservative Party’s weekend Spring Forum.

At the same time, there’s a movement afoot on the Labour side to open up a chapel in the famous Westminster Palace to same sex couples. Pink News reports:

A chapel within the Palace of Westminster may be changed in order to allow equal marriage ceremonies, as part of a proposal by Labour MP Chris Bryant. Mr Bryant, who sat on the Committee for the equal marriage bill and is openly gay, submitted a proposal to convert the chapel of St Mary Undercroft to a multi-faith prayer room, which could potentially allow equal marriage ceremonies to take place there. Under current plans for marriage equality, the Church of England, and therefore the chapel, which lies in a crypt below parliament, is exempt from providing same-sex wedding ceremonies. The plans could allow religious denominations such as the Quakers and Liberal Judaism access, both of which have said they will perform the ceremonies.

England, UK: Entire Labour Shadow Cabinet to Vote for Marriage Equality

Wednesday, December 12th, 2012

England, UK: Entire Labour Shadow Cabinet to Vote for Marriage EqualityAlthough he will not be whipping all his MPs to vote for equal marriage, the leader of the Labour Party, Ed Miliband has said that his entire shadow cabinet backs the move.

Mr Miliband said: “I am pleased that the government will finally bring forward legislation to allow equal marriage and that we have succeeded in making sure that religious organisations that want to carry out same-sex marriages will be able to do so. However, it is disappointing that the government is making same-sex marriage illegal in the Church of England.

“The Labour Party has a long and proud history of campaigning to end discrimination against same-sex couples and it is Labour votes which will ensure that this measure is passed in the House of Commons. This promises to be a step forward in allowing every couple who want to signify their commitment to each other by marrying to do so.

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

England, United Kingdom: Labour to Have Free Vote on Marriage EqualityThe Labour Party has signalled that it will now allow its MPs to have a free vote on the government’s equal marriage plans despite previously indicating that it would impose a three-line whip.

An unnamed Labour MP has told the New Statesman that the move does not constitute a U-turn. He said: “The three-line whip only applied to civil ceremonies. Now the government has agreed to allow gay marriages in religious buildings, we will hold a free vote.”

On Tuesday, Labour MP Austin Mitchell told PinkNews.co.uk that his party must allow Labour MPs to have a conscience vote on the issue.

United Kingdom: Labour to Enforce Party Discipline in Marriage Equality Vote?

Thursday, September 27th, 2012

United Kingdom: Labour to Enforce Party Discipline in Marriage Equality Vote?PinkNews.co.uk understands Labour is likely to whip its MPs when it comes to supporting the government’s policy of equal civil marriage rights for gay couples.

Unlike their Conservative counterparts, who have already been promised a free vote, Labour is following the option of the Lib Dems, by invoking a three-line Commons whip.

It means Labour MPs such as Jim Dobbin, Joe Benton and Mary Glindon, who have already signalled their public opposition to marriage equality, risk potential disciplinary action if they go against party lines and pass through the no lobby.
