Malta: Labour Party Commits to Drafting Civil Unions Bill

On the island nation of Malta, the Labour party says they would create a council to draft a civil unions bill, Malta Today reports:

Speaking during a meeting with human rights NGO aditus, the MGRM, representatives of the transgender community and University group We Are, Muscat said this would be the first time that a major political party would have an electoral programme with a chapter fully dedicated to civil liberties and equality rights. “A Labour government is also committed to set up a consultative council with the first priority being to draft the civil unions law. This should be a breakthrough in civil liberties in Malta,” [Labour leader Joseph] Muscat said.

It’s a welcome change in a country that currently has few rights for LGBT citizens.

Malta: Labour Party Promises Gays Civil Partnerships if Elected

MaltaThe leader of the Labour party in the Maltese House of Representatives has said his party would allow gay couples to have civil unions, a gender identity law for trans people, and that he would appoint a minister for civil rights and equality.

Joseph Muscat, leader of Malta’s Labour government, also promised to put in place a consultative council which would screen new laws before they were enacted in order to avoid LGBT discrimination, reports the Malta Star.

The Labour leader was addressing a meeting organised by LGBT Labour, and said that the country should now take the steps to give equal rights to LGBT people.

New Zealand: Labour Party Controlled By the Gays, Disgraced Former MP Says

Disgraced former MP, Taito Phillip Field, has attacked leaders of New Zealand’s Labour Party, saying it has become too liberal, specifically criticising its support of equal marriage for same-sex couples.

Mr Field, who was an MP under Helen Clark’s government, said that government had “infested” the party with homosexuality, reported Stuff. He said:

“There is a perception that they are controlled by homosexuals. It’s like a smell that won’t go away.”

Ireland: Gilmore Clarifies that Marriage Equality Endorsement is Party’s Stand, Not Government’s

Irish Prime Minister Won't State Position on Marriage EqualityTANAISTE Eamon Gilmore’s backing for gay marriage is Labour’s way, not the Government’s way, he has claimed.

Mr Gilmore has confirmed he is speaking for the Labour Party, and not the Coalition, when he says the gay marriage is an issue “whose time is come”.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has repeatedly refused to support Mr Gilmore’s stance, saying he speaks for the Government.

Ireland: Labour Party Calls for Marriage Equality Referendum

Irish FlagThe leader of Irish Labour has called for a referendum on gay marriage at the launch of the party’s election manifesto on Friday, insisting the country is “ready” for equality.

As reported by the Irish Independent, Eamon Gilmore said: “Ireland is ready for equality between gay and straight,” and he confirmed the party’s stance to push for a referendum on the introduction of legislation to allow gay marriage.

The current Fianna-Fail and Green Part coalition government passed legislation to allow same-sex civil partnerships last year, with the law taking effect in January. But the first unions will not take place until April as it takes three months to complete the registration process.

Ireland: Labour Party Leader Promises Constitutional rewrite, Could Open Up Gay Marriage, Abortion Debates

LABOUR Party leader Eamon Gilmore will re-open the divisive abortion debate through his promise to rewrite the Constitution if he gets into power.

Aside from abortion, Mr Gilmore’s constitutional reform plan would also open up a host of contentious issues like the recognition of God, property rights, the definition of the family, gay marriage and the EU. Any changes to the Constitution would have to be ratified by a referendum.

Following on from Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny’s political reform proposals, such as scrapping the Seanad, Mr Gilmore said he also wanted to see institutional changes – but didn’t say what they should be.
