A positive ruling for LGBT rights in Lebanon.

Dot429 reports:

A transgender woman was accused by the state of having a same-sex relationship with a man. However, Judge Naji El Dahdah, of Jdeide Court, Beirut threw out the case on January 28, 2014. The woman on trial was born with an intersex condition but was assigned a male identity. However, after growing up feeling that she was female, she underwent gender reassignment surgery in the 1990s. Despite the surgery, she was still listed as a male on her identity papers, which led to Lebanese authorities believing she had breached Article 534 of Lebanon’s penal code, which criminalizes same-sex sexual intercourse and subsequently same-sex relationships. El Dahdah, however, rejected the case based on a previous ruling by Judge Mounir Suleiman in 2009.

One small step forward in a part of the world that usually sees very little progress on LGBT rights.

Being Gay in Lebanon

By most accounts, Lebanon is the gay-friendliest country in the Arab world. But activists say behind closed doors, sexual minorities are often abused in this deeply patriarchal country. They call for the abolishment of a law that essentially makes homosexuality a crime..

At this club, it is just as cool for men to dance with other men, as it is for them to dance with women. That’s because this is a gay-friendly party – an unusual event in the region.

But Beirut is different – complete with gay clubs and gay-friendly bars and restaurants, it is unique in the region, and even in other parts of Lebanon. Georges Azzi is one of the founders of Helem, one of the only organizations in the Arab world that openly works to protect and provide health care for people that self-identify as LGBT. That’s lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

Lebanon: Fighting for Gay Rights

Gay LebanonThe mainstream media–and some gay rights organizations–would have people believe that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in the Middle East need the West to “save” them from the violent backwardness and homophobia of the region. But rarely, if ever, do they ask LGBT people organizing in the Middle East about how they are fighting for their rights.

Ghassan Makarem, the executive director of the Lebanese LGBT rights group HELEM (the Arabic acronym for Lebanese Protection for Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgenders), talked to Frankie Cook in August 2010 about the struggle for human rights in Lebanon and beyond.

HOW, WHEN and why did HELEM or the LGBT movement in Lebanon emerge?

HELEM STARTED around 2001-2003. Before that there was something called Club FREE, which focused on socializing amongst LGBT people. Then people got together to talk about doing political things.

Lebanon: Gays March With Others to Demand Secular Government

THOUSANDS of Lebanese marched to parliament in Beirut on Sunday in a peaceful rally demanding the secularisation of a state long built on sectarianism.

The rally, organised by independent grassroots movement Laique Pride, joined women, men and children of all ages who blocked the main road leading to parliament as they waved Lebanese flags and chanted, ‘Secularism’.

Gay rights activists too made a strong show in the rally, waving gay pride flags and banners that read: ‘Queers for secularism’.
