Springfield, Missouri Repeals LGBT Rights With Heartbreaking 51.4% Vote

Wednesday, April 8th, 2015

Springfield, MissouriThe religious right has it figured out – put LGBT rights repeals on the ballot in special elections, and they can turn-out enough people to get them off the books. It happened again in Springfield, Missouri yesterday:

Voters in Springfield, Missouri today repealed protections for LGBT citizens which were added by the City Council to the city’s non-discrimination ordinance last October, KY3 reports: With all the votes tallied, about 51.4 percent of the voters on Tuesday said they wanted to repeal the City Council’s action, while 48.6 percent wanted to retain it. The raw numbers are 15,347 people voted “yes” to repeal the anti-discrimination ordinance and 14,493 people voted “no” to keep it on the books. For a brief time on Tuesday night, when about 60 percent of the precincts were counted, the “no repeal” votes had a slim lead over the “yes, repeal” votes. As more precincts were counted, however, the “yes” votes went back on top.

They did it with the same pack of lies that has worked elsewhere, using scary lines about men using women’s bathrooms. It just makes me crazy to see these hateful lies used again and again, and even more to see that they work.

Illinois, USA: NOM Caught in Another Lie

Thursday, April 4th, 2013

NOM Chicago Bears LieNOM has been caught in another lie as it campaigns to block marriage equality in Illinois. This time it involves a professional sports team. The Chicago Tribune reports:

The Bears and former linebacker Brian Urlacher denied any involvement Wednesday with the Ruth Institute — an affiliate of the National Organization For Marriage, which opposes same-sex marriage — after an online promotion for the institute stated a clear involvement of the team… In an advertisement for its June gala at an upcoming conference, the California-based group stated, “For now, you should know that we have two fabulous raffle items from the Chicago Bears Organization (and a huge THANK YOU to the Bears for supporting our message).”… “I sign a lot of stuff for charity and I don’t always know where it goes,” Urlacher told the Tribune. “If I would have known it was for this cause, I wouldn’t have done it.”

NOM has a history of trouble with the truth. And if they lie about stupid stuff like this…

Rhode Island, USA: NOM Falls Back on Old Lies for Newspaper Ad Against Marriage Equality

Friday, January 18th, 2013

National Organization for MarriageThe National Organization for Marriage published a full-page newspaper ad this week attacking same-sex marriage in Rhode Island. Like decades of anti-gay propaganda before it, the ad relies on two familiar tropes. First, marriage equality will somehow curb “religious freedom” because people will not have free reign to discriminate against same-sex couples. Secondly, children will learn that gay people exist.

Neither of these arguments is particular convincing, but NOM believes they are calling out “The Big Lie” of marriage equality, because “people of faith will pay the price.” The new coalition to support marriage equality in Rhode Island has published a thorough fact-check of the ad.

Mashup Shows the Same Anti Marriage Equality Ad Running in Four States

Monday, October 29th, 2012

Here’s a great mashup of that same ad that is running in all four contested marriage states.

And as the ad shows, it’s the same scare tactic used in California in 2008, and in Hawaii in 1998.

Minnesota, USA: Another Day, Another NOM Lie

Friday, October 26th, 2012

Minnesota, USA: Another Day, Another National Organization for Marriage LieIn its efforts to create fear among voters, the so-called National Organization for Marriage (NOM) and its hired gun, Frank Schubert, are doubling down these final two weeks before the election with phony claims that churches and religious-based charities will be sued or punished unless gay couples are blocked from the freedom to marry.

In my post “Here Come the Lies” I provided an overview of Schubert’s scare-tactic playbook. My first follow-up post, “Anti-Gay-Marriage Lie Number 1,” reviewed the discredited claim that allowing gay couples to marry will result in opponents of marriage equality being “fired, sued, fined, and punished.” My second follow-up post, “Anti-Gay-Marriage Lie Number 2,” addressed the absurd assertion that marriage doesn’t really matter and that civil unions should be considered good enough for same-sex couples. In this post I’ll examine the bogus claim of harm to churches and religious charities.

In a new attack ad running in Minnesota, the laundry list of “consequences” of marriage equality includes a dire report of “charities closed down, churches sued.” The voiceover provides no details, but viewers are offered glimpses of news coverage meant to confer credibility on these claims. Let’s look a little closer.

Massachusetts, USA: Former Catholic Charities Leader Says NOM Lying About Adoption Services Cancellation

Sunday, October 14th, 2012

NOM LiesIt’s one of National Organization for Marriage’s favorite fact-free canards: if same-sex couples are allowed access to civil marriage, religious-based charities will be forced to close up shop. Preserve Marriage Washington, a local arm of NOM trying to block approval of Referendum 74 and thereby repeal Washington’s freedom to marry law, has included this scurrilous statement in their ads:

“Opponents of the freedom to marry ignore the truth and distort history when they talk about Catholic Charities of Boston and its decision to shut down its adoption services. I’m shocked and amazed that so many years later, they are making the false claim that Catholic Charities’ decision had anything to do with allowing committed gay and lesbian couples to marry,” he told The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

In fact Catholic Charities had willingly placed over a dozen children with adoptive gay couples before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court struck down freedom to marry prohibitions in the law. But is wasn’t the court that ordered Catholic Charities to shut their doors. It was the Vatican. And it had nothing to do with marriage law.

Washington, USA: Marriage Equality Opponents Calling Voters and Saying Yes Means No

Saturday, October 13th, 2012

Washington Marriage Equality Opponents Calling Voters and Saying Yes Means NoOpponents of marriage equality have reached a new low. They have been calling voters in Washington who support marriage equality and lying to them, telling them they need to reject Ref. 74 in order to allow same-sex marriage.

Which is the exact opposite of true.

They are flat out lying to voters and saying they’re volunteering with “Citizens of Washington United for Marriage.” That organization does not exist. But it sounds a lot like Washington United for Marriage, the organization actually working to educate voters about the importance of approving Referendum 74.

How do I know this? On Sunday night, Seattle Atheists (my local group) hosted the Flying Spaghetti Monster Dinner for Marriage Equality. It was an amazing night with all donations going to Washington United for Marriage.

NOM Lies About DOMA Repeal Attempt

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

DOMA Repeal and NOM LiesThe Human Rights Campaign is disputing an assertion by an anti-gay group that Senate Democrats plan on amending major defense budget legislation with a measure to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act.

In an action alert e-mail sent to followers on Wednesday, the National Organization for Marriage warns opponents of same-sex marriage that Senate Democratic leadership intends to alter the fiscal year 2012 defense authorization on the floor to include language that would repeal DOMA.

“Reports out of Washington are now indicating that — just a week after forcing a bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) through the Judiciary Committee on a party line vote –Senator [Dianne] Feinstein, Senate Judiciary Chair Pat[rick] Leahy (D-VT) and Majority Leader Harry Reid may now attach the DOMA repeal bill to the 2012 Defense Authorization bill, a bill that must be passed in order to fund our servicemen and women through the next year,” the email states.

CA: Analysis of Prop 8 Campaign Shows Late Shift in White Parents to Yes Side

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Immediately after Proposition 8 passed, many who supported same-sex marriage tried to make sense of the results. A set of assumptions gained wide acceptance. Some are correct. Most, however, are just plain wrong. And it’s crucial that we know what happened in the last election before launching another attempt to legalize marriage for all.

I recently headed a team that analyzed data from polls conducted by the No on 8 campaign during the run-up to the election. Our analysis sheds new light on what fueled the Proposition 8 victory.

One big question after the election: Who moved? Six weeks before the vote, Proposition 8 was too close to call. But in the final weeks, supporters pulled ahead, and by election day, the outcome was all but certain.
