Nebraska, USA: FRC May Sue to Overturn Lincoln’s LGBT Rights Law

Thursday, March 7th, 2013

NebraskaPutting the lie to the idea that anti-gay groups are only opposed to the use of the word marriage, the Family Research Council may sue to try to force the city of Lincoln, Nebraska to roll back its LGBT rights law, Askarbent reports:

Last spring, after the Lincoln, Nebraska City Council passed a gay rights addition to the city’s nondiscrimination ordinance, the Nebraska Family Council and Family First gathered 10,000 signatures to nullify the ordinance. Now David Bydalek of Family First Nebraska, an affiliate of the Family Research Council, and Al Riskowki, of the Nebraska Family Council, want the issue on the ballot and are considering seeking a writ of mandamus that would force city officials to perform what they consider the city’s statutory duty, although city statutes don’t say how soon a referendum election must be held after signatures are verified.

It’s clear that some of these groups won’t be happy until and unless gays are pushed back into the closet and, quite possibly, into prison for the crime of homosexuality.

Nebraska, USA: Lincoln Non-Discrimination Ordinance Taken Out of Effect

Sunday, August 19th, 2012

Nebraska, USA: Lincoln Non-Discrimination Ordinance Taken Out of EffectAfter a hard fought battle to pass non-discrimination ordinance for LGBT people, lawmakers in Lincoln, Nebraska, are pulling the issue off the table.

An ordinance had support in the city council, which passed it last May, and Mayor Chris Beutler backed it, but opponents gathered enough signatures to force a ballot vote and officials simply don’t think the timing is right for a city-wide vote.

Nebraska, USA: Opponents of Lincoln LGBT Civil Rights Ordinance to Force Repeal Vote

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Lincoln Gay RightsOpponents of a new city ordinance that would expand the civil rights protections to include its LGBT citizens, said Tuesday they had collected enough signatures of registered voters to force the city council to either repeal the measure or place it on the November ballot for a city-wide referendum.

On May 14, the city council approved the “fairness ordinance,” which would prohibit discrimination against LGBT people in the areas of employment, housing and public accommodations.

But under the Lincoln city charter, citizens can seek a referendum on any newly passed ordinance by collecting enough signatures in a 15-day period.

NE, USA: Lincoln Considers LGBT Non-Discrimination Ordinance

Saturday, April 21st, 2012

Lincoln Gay RightsLincoln, Nebraska may follow Omaha in passing an ordinance protecting LGBT people from discrimination, and will be officially proposed later this month, supporters announced at a news conference yesterday, the Journal Star reports:

The proposal would extend legal anti-discrimination protection in Lincoln to gays and transgender people in housing, employment and public accommodations.

“As a person of faith who practices the peaceable, inclusive religious principles of the Jesus movement, discrimination has no basis because God shows no partiality,” said the Rev. Karla J. Cooper, pastor of Quinn Chapel and chaplain at Doane College. “It is a divine mandate and imperative to pass the fairness ordinance in the city of Lincoln,” Cooper said to the more than 40 people gathered in support…
