NC: Ministers Show the Real Reason for Anti Marriage Equality Amendment

Monday, September 12th, 2011

In the classic movie “The Matrix,” the world everybody walks around in is not real. A computer-generated facade disguises an ugly, bleak reality. But I’d have preferred to live in the ugly reality because it had something the Matrix could not offer – the truth.

There are Matrix moments in politics, too – those rare times when we get to see behind the slick words and get a sense of what people truly believe. Such a moment broke out unexpectedly last Tuesday at a news conference in the Legislative Building in Raleigh.

A handful of black leaders, mostly ministers, took the microphone in support of the anti-gay Marriage Amendment, which Raleigh legislators will debate this week (instead of talking about jobs and 10 percent unemployment).

Ireland: Government Ministers Rebuff Bishops on Civil Partnerships

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

TWO GOVERNMENT Ministers have dismissed claims from the bishops that the Civil Partnership Bill may be unconstitutional, while human rights groups have challenged the opposition of the Catholic bishops to the measure.

A spokesman for Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern said he had stated time and again that the Bill has been carefully drafted, on the advice of the Attorney General, to ensure that it does not undermine the constitutional position of marriage. He added that the provision of civil partnership for same-sex couples is a civil rights issue and is supported by all parties in the Oireachtas.

Mr Ahern also said there were no proposals to allow a free vote on “this important legislation”.

834 Iowa Ministers Sign Petition Demanding a Gay Marriage Ban

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

A group of conservative ministers presented a petition Tuesday calling for candidates for statewide office to declare their opposition to the state’s gay marriage law or risk losing the group’s support.

The petition, signed by 834 Iowa ministers, and an accompanying letter signed by social conservative groups declares that same-sex marriage “is defined by the Bible as immoral and sinful,” and called for lawmakers to define marriage as between a man and a woman only.

The push against a 2009 Iowa Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage comes a week before the June 8 primary election, and organizers made clear they want candidates to know they would pay a price if they oppose referring a constitutional amendment to voters that would overturn the court’s decision.
