New Zealand: Same-Sex Weddings Begin At 39,000 Feet

Monday, August 19th, 2013

New Zealand – Google Maps

from Google Maps

Same-sex couples began marrying in New Zealand yesterday, legally, with the wedding at 39,000 feet. Edge Boston reports:

When Lynley Bendall and Ally Wanikau walked down the aisle to exchange vows Monday, the fasten-seatbelt signs were off. The couple celebrated the legalization of gay marriage in New Zealand by getting hitched in a plane at 39,000 feet (11,900 meters). Along for the ride was Jesse Tyler Ferguson, star of the ABC sitcom “Modern Family.” Instead of soda and peanuts, the flight attendants served champagne and canapes. Monday was the first day same-sex couples could marry in New Zealand, where the law was changed back in April. Officials said that about three dozen same-sex couples planned to marry in towns and cities throughout the country.

The first same-sex couple to be married on the ground got married in Auckland at 9 AM. Towleroad reports:

While it was still technically yesterday evening in the United States, couples such as Natasha Vitali and Melissa Ray have already exchanged vows. Ray and Vitali won their ceremony as part of an all-expenses-paid giveaway on a local radio station, and were the first same-sex couple to be married in the country. Their ceremony took place at 9 AM local time in Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city.

And the International Business Times reports that many Australians are expected to come to New Zealand to get married:

Tourism New Zealand’s new ads under the banner “100% Pure Choice” — a play on its longstanding “100% Pure” marketing campaign — appear to have paid off. The Australian Marriage Equality lobby group expects some 1,000 same-sex couples to travel to the neighboring country to marry, despite the fact that their weddings won’t be legally recognized in their home country. “We know that many hundreds of Australian same-sex couples will fly to New Zealand to wed and spend their money,” the lobby group’s national director, Rodney Croome, said Sunday. “By not moving forward on marriage equality [in Australia] our politicians are effectively exporting money and jobs to New Zealand.”

I guess Australia stands to lose out on a ton of money from these couples marrying in neighboring New Zealand – the country better get its act together on marriage equality.

New Zealand us set to become the first country in the South Pacific to allow same sex marriage. On Top Magazine reports:

A law legalizing gay marriage in New Zealand takes effect on Monday. Lawmakers approved the law in May, making the island nation the first in the Asia-Pacific region to approve such unions. Labour MP Louisa Wall previously credited President Barack Obama’s endorsement of marriage equality for giving momentum to her bill.

Here’s hoping the law provides impetus for neighboring Australia after next month’s elections…

New Zealand: Church Backs Out of Same Sex Wedding, Cites Policy

Thursday, July 18th, 2013

St. Matthew's in the City - Auckland - Apple Maps

from Apple Maps

An Anglican Church that was slated to host one of the first same sex weddings in the country has backed out, according to Pink News:

St Matthew’s in the City vicar Glynn Cardy said the decision to not hold the wedding came down to policy. He said: “And that policy says that the marriage between a same-gender couple can’t happen inside St Matthew’s church, can’t be taken by an Anglican priest within St Matthew’s church.” He went on to say that the policy is discriminatory and that he is committed to working towards changing it. “I’ve got a motion before the Auckland Synod in September that is asking the synod to engage with that and then we’d see what happens at general synod in May 2014,” he continued.

The wedding will go on in another venue, although it may be preceded by a planned Air New Zealand wedding.

New Zealand: Contest Urges Gay/Lesbian Australians to Come Get Married

Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

New Zealand – Google Maps

from Google Maps

New Zealand tourism officials want gay and lesbian couples to come to the country from Australia to get married, so they’re starting a contest. The Canberra Times has details:

Tourist authorities have started a search for an Australian same-sex couple to be the first to marry in New Zealand when the country legalises gay marriage on August 19. Tourism New Zealand’s national search has been launched as a competition with Australian-based gay and lesbian newspaper Star Observer. The number of Australians travelling to NZ is expected to increase because of the Marriage Amendment Act. The Australian manager of Tourism New Zealand, Tim Burgess, has said: “New Zealand is already the No. 1 holiday choice for Australians going overseas [1.15 million visited last year], so why not the No. 1 same-sex marriage destination?”

we celebrate with New Zealand’s gays and lesbians, and hope will be celebrating here in California as well soon.
