USA, Texas: Newspaper Refuses to Publish Same-Sex Wedding Announcement

Monday, September 9th, 2013

Patricia-Wrigtner-and-Michelle-CooksA newspaper in Texarkana, Texas has refused to publish the wedding announcement for a lesbian couple.

Think Progress reports:

Michelle Cooks points out that if the Pentagon can offer same-sex benefits, then she and her partner Patricia Wrightner should be able to put their picture in the Texarkana Gazette. But Editor Les Minor claimed that the newspaper has a policy based on state laws: MINOR: The Texarkana Gazette publishes wedding, engagement and anniversary announcements related to marriages or impending marriages that are recognized by states in which it circulates. This policy have been in place for several years. Neither Texas nor Arkansas allows same-sex marriages or recognize same sex marriages from other states. If those laws change, this newspaper will re-examine its policy.

This is bullshit, and everyone knows it – these laws do not prohibit newspapers from publishing same-sex wedding announcements. It’s a personal choice.

Mississippi, USA: Newspaper Defends Decision to Run Lesbian Wedding Story on Front Page

Thursday, February 21st, 2013

Laurel Leader CallMississippi’s Laurel Leader Call ran a front page story on February about the first same sex marriage in the county, and received a bunch of hate mail. The paper’s owner has just published an editorial defending the decision, Yahoo News reports:

We were well aware that the majority of people in Jones County are not in favor of gay marriage. However, any decent newspaper with a backbone can not base decisions on whether to cover a story based on whether the story will make people angry. The job of a community newspaper is not pretending something didn’t take place or ignoring it because it will upset people. No, our job is to inform reads what is going on in our own and let them make their own judgments. That is exactly what we did with the wedding story.

Excatly the same thing happened when our local paper here in El Dorado County, California, a notoriously conservative county, published our wedding story in 2004. There was a huge outcry and a war of letters that lasted for weeks, with all the usual suspects saying how horrible it was for their children to have seen such a thing on the front page, and how our marriage was wrecking society. Our hearts go out to Jessica and Crystal.

Hawaii, USA: Honolulu Paper Calls for Marriage Equality

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013

HawaiiHonolulu’s Star-Advertiser has issued an editorial calling for full marriage equality:

In the marriage equality debate, I have yet to hear from anyone how the marriage that my late husband Bill Woods (the original organizer of the challenge in 1991) and I had in Canada — which was recognized also in most of Europe and many other countries — affected or “redefined” their marriage.

Think Hawaii will beat Illinois and Rhode Island to the punch?

Friday, December 21st, 2012

Italy: Vatican Paper Compares Marriage Equality to CommunismFaced with recent setbacks in the United States and in Europe, the Catholic Church has intensified its increasingly uphill battle against gay marriage.

The latest salvo came on Monday (Dec. 17), with a front-page article in the Vatican’s semiofficial newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano.

Historian Lucetta Scaraffia compared proponents of gay marriage, with their championing of “marriage equality,” to 20th-century communists who wooed millions with their promise of perfect social and economical equality.

Indiana, USA: Conservative Paper Against Marriage Equality Ban

Monday, December 10th, 2012

Indiana, USA: Conservative Paper Against Marriage Equality BanStatutory law of Indiana already bans same sex marriage in the Hoosier state. So why then do some Hoosier lawmakers want to pile on by amending the state constitution to ban same sex marriage? The Indiana Legislature, which goes into session in January, has plenty of legitimate issues — among them education, economic development, taxes — to deal with in 2013.

Of course, seeking to make gay and lesbian citizens feel even more unwelcome in Indiana than they already do is an economic development issue. Make that an anti-economic development issue, in that it discourages talented gay and lesbian citizens from seeking jobs in a state where they may not feel welcome. And it sends a message to companies headed by gay and lesbian individuals that their businesses are not welcome.

Fortunately, any number of Indiana businesses and industries have recognized the value in hiring skilled employees, and offer same sex couples the same benefits as traditional couples. And yet, the legislature of Indiana seeks to slam one more door in their faces. In the 21st century, this is ridiculous.

Minnesota, USA: Newspaper Endorses Marriage Equality, Loses Subscribers

Sunday, November 4th, 2012

Minnesota Newspaper Endorses Marriage Equality, Loses SubscribersAfter endorsing marriage equality, the editors of the Swift County Monitor-News in Benson, Minn., report losing a handful of subscribers.

As the Minnesota Post’s David Brauer points out, the loss of five subscribers to a base of 3,000 has the same proportional weight of the Post losing 1,000 Sunday subscribers. Publisher Reed Anifson said that Swift County’s population decline makes each subscriber even more crucial.

North Dakota, USA: Newspaper Bans Lesbian Wedding Announcement, Then Reconsiders

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

A North Dakota paper that currently bans same sex marriage announcements is reviewing its policy after an outpouring of support for one lesbian couple whose announcement was turned down.

Allison Johnson and Kelsey Smith posted a screen shot of the email from the paper, The Forum, turning them down — and it went viral. Someone even started a Change.org petition for the women, which currently has over 2,000 signatures. Johnson and Smith described to Jezebel how the news spread:

“We thought, ‘Hmm, we’ve never seen an ad like this before, so we’ll be the first. Cool!” Johnson told us. “We certainly didn’t expect to get rejected.” […]

California, USA: Japanese Paper Seeks Gay/Lesbian Couple Marrying in State Within Two Weeks

Wednesday, July 18th, 2012

Japanese Paper Seeks Gay/Lesbian Couple Marrying in California Within Two WeeksYomiuri Shimbun is Japan’s largest newspaper in circulation. Their Los Angeles branch is currently writing stories for a series, translated as A Walk inside the USA, profiling everyday events that occur in America that would interest their Japanese readers in Japan.

Their next story is profiling a same-sex marriage ceremony/commitment ceremony. They are looking for a couple who is going to be getting married within the next couple of weeks and is willing to have their wedding photographed.

The location can be anywhere in California. The bureau chief and another employee would attend the wedding and take photos unobtrusively. They would also like to interview the couple before or after the wedding, whichever is most convenient.

If you or anybody else you know would be interested in helping to make this story a reality please email Tamar at tamar@yomiurila.com.

Maine, USA: Paper Declares Anti Marriage Equality Group’s Tax Exemption Argument “False”

Sunday, July 15th, 2012

Maine, USA: Paper Declares Anti Marriage Equality Group's Tax Exemption Argument "False"“… churches and religious organizations could lose their tax exemptions and be forced to discard their moral principles in order to be compliant with the law.” – Protect Marriage Maine’s website

This is a common argument used in nationwide campaigns against same-sex marriage and one of the most chilling possibilities for religious groups opposed to allowing gay marriage.

We’ll focus on the claim of the possible loss of tax-exempt status. It’s the most concrete claim here.
