FL: Orange County to Adopt Orlando Domestic Partner Registry

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Orlando, Florida Domestic Partner RegistryLawmakers in Orange County, Florida, agreed Tuesday to broaden the scope of the domestic-partner registry currently in effect in the city of Orlando, which will extend certain benefits to unmarried gay and straight couples throughout the county.

The Orlando Sentinelreports that the agreement comes after several weeks of debate between advocates for gay rights and Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, who two years ago publicly stated her opposition to same-sex marriage and adoption.

FL: Area Hospitals Will Honor Orlando Domestic Partner Registry

Friday, January 20th, 2012

Orlando Domestic Partner RegistryOrlando’s new domestic-partner registry could soon be used by patients and their loved ones in hospital rooms all over Central Florida.

Officials from Metro Orlando’s two largest hospital chains say they will honor the registry throughout their systems, even outside city limits. That means gay and straight couples who register with Orlando could secure greater visitation and decision-making powers at hospitals across the region.

“The gay community, at large, would be ecstatic,” said Mary Meeks, an attorney and member of Orlando Anti-Discrimination Ordinance Committee. “It would be very comforting to hear. We applaud the hospitals for doing this.”

FL: Gay Activists to Push for Orange County Domestic Partner Registry

Friday, January 6th, 2012

Orlando, Florida Domestic Partner RegistryEquality advocates in Orange County, Florida are will pressure Mayor Teresa Jacobs to support a countywide domestic-partner registry, which would provide “a handful of rights in certain situations, such as allowing visitation at a hospital or to make funeral arrangements after a loved one’s death.”

Organizers “plan to flood Jacobs with personal stories, adding to the positive feedback she has received from Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Orange County Comptroller Martha Haynie and her own legal staff.” “She hasn’t said no, but why isn’t she saying yes?” asked attorney Mary Meeks of the Orlando Anti-Discrimination Ordinance Committee.

FL: Gay Couples Ready for Orlando’s New Partner Registry

Monday, December 26th, 2011

Orlando, Florida Domestic Partner RegistryGay advocates expect a rush of same-sex couples at City Hall when the city’s new domestic-partnership registry opens next month. And not all of those couples will be from Orlando, nor will all of them be gay, supporters of the law predict.

The City Clerk’s Office already has begun accepting appointments for couples to sign the registry once it officially opens. All 16 appointments available Jan. 12 — the registry’s first day — were quickly snatched up.

“I think there’s going to be incredible interest. We’re going to see a big surge in the beginning,” said Equality Florida field director Joe Saunders.

FL: Orlando Unanimously Approves Domestic Partner Registry

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

Orlando Domestic Partner RegistryOrlando’s gay community celebrated Monday as the city became the first in Central Florida to recognize the relationships of same-sex couples.

The City Council voted unanimously to enact a domestic partnership registry, a measure that stops short of marriage but does grant gay couples some of the same rights. On a symbolic level, the official recognition is just as important as the legal rights that come with it, supporters said.

“This is an historic event for Orlando, and it is a monumentally important event for our community. It will be the first time in our lives that our families are recognized by our government,” said attorney Mary Meeks, who helped push for the registry. “At least here in Orlando, our relationships are recognized as real, and they are valued and they are accepted.”

FL: Orlando Considering Domestic Partner Registry

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

Orlando Domestic Partner RegistryThe first domestic partnership registry in Central Florida is one step closer to reality this week.

Orlando City Council members voted unanimously in favor of an official registry. The final vote will be made next Monday.

Nothing in the ordinance would treat domestic partnership as marriage, but registered domestic partners — gay or straight — would get certain rights.

FL: Orlando Plans Registry for Gay, Lesbian Couples

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Claudia AsburyEvery time Joyce Ducas walked into a hospital room or met a new doctor treating her partner, Claudia Asbury, for lymphoma, Ducas tensed up, fearing she might have to fight just to stay by her side.

That paled next to what she faced when Asbury died a year ago. Despite a decade together and thousands spent on power-of-attorney documents, Ducas was turned away when it came time to sort out Asbury’s final affairs, from the funeral home to the state motor-vehicle department.

“I was being told, ‘You don’t count.’ It was so horrible,” said Ducas, 61, a clinical psychologist. “You’re at the pinnacle of this emotional experience, and to have to go through all of that on top of it. It was a nightmare.”
