USA, Arizona: Marriage Equality Advocates Rally in Phoenix

Tuesday, September 17th, 2013

Arizona mapMarriage equality advocates in Arizona held a rally in Phoenix yesterday.

The Arizona Daly Star reports:

Hoping to create a change in attitudes, a coalition of civil-rights groups is taking the first steps today to convince Arizonans that letting gays wed would be a good thing. The education campaign being launched comes five years after 56 percent of those who went to the polls voted to amend the Arizona Constitution to define marriage in this state as strictly between one man and one woman. Supporters of rescinding the ban contend there are Arizonans who can be convinced — if not now, then by 2016 — to support repeal.

I’d love to see marriage equality in my home state – the GOP has held sway there for so long. It’s time for a little progressive action.

Arizona, USA: Phoenix City Council Bans Discrimination Against Gays

Wednesday, February 27th, 2013

PhoenixThe Phoenix, Arizona city council just expanded their anti-discrimination law to include the LGBT community – covering housing, city contract, employment and public accommodations, Gay Star News reports:

The vote of 5-3 came after over five hours of heated debate on Tuesday evening (26 February), with the majority saying Phoenix would benefit from projecting an image that it welcomes diversity. Businesses and individuals that don’t comply could be criminally prosecuted and face a misdemeanor charge, punishable by a $2,500 fine.

The greater Phoenix area is notoriously right-leaning – I grew up in Tucson, and Phoenix was always the larger conservative counterbalance to liberal Tucson. But over the last decade, the city of Phoenix itself has become more liberal and gay friendly (as large cities often do). It’s great to see this in the face of the GOP takeover of the state.

Wonder if finger-in-the-face Governor Jan Brewer is planning to overturn it, somehow? Wouldn’t surprise me.

AZ, USA: Gay Flash Mob Disrupts Anti Gay Group at Phoenix Pride

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

Saturday was Gay Pride in Phoenix, AZ, where not just the temperatures where running high. Queerty reader Mike Skiff of Third Rail Media reports that fundamentalist Christians were on hand to protest the event, with the usual “Jesus hates you” catcalls and placards.

While Pride goers gave as good as they got from the haters, it was a flash-mob performance of “Born This Way,” led by Queen B, that really silenced them. (The dance sequence begins around the 5:22 mark).

AZ, USA: Phoenix Mayor Working on Anti Gay Discrimination Ordinance

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

Phoenix, Arizona Mayor and Gay RightsPhoenix Mayor Greg Stanton’s aides and a group of attorneys are working to draft ordinances that could outlaw discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender residents.

The aides and attorneys believe that if rewritten, city laws would also give victims of such discrimination in restaurants and other businesses an opportunity to file complaints with the city’s Equal Opportunity Department for investigation — an option they currently do not have.

The effort comes as the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel near Van Buren and Third streets tries to recover from threats of boycott by the gay community over a decision by the manager of the hotel’s District American Kitchen & Wine Bar to expel a lesbian couple in late February.
