France: President Unmoved By Rally, Will Continue With Marriage Equality Plans

Monday, January 14th, 2013

Paris, FranceFrance’s ruling Socialists have refused to back down on laws to legalise gay marriage and adoption, a day after hundreds of thousands of people marched against the plans in Paris.

Despite the massive turn-out in Paris on Sunday – 800,000 according to organisers, 340,000 according to police – a statement from president Francois Hollande’s Elysee Palace after the rally made it clear he would press ahead with the reforms.

The government plans to put the proposed legislation to parliament on January 29. “This is a bill that strictly takes nothing away from anyone, which does not do away with the words father and mother…,” justice minister Christiane Taubira told French television channel TF1.

England, UK: Marriage Equality Plans Leaked

Friday, December 7th, 2012

England, UK: Marriage Equality Plans LeakedGay and lesbian couples in England and Wales are a step closer to being able to legally marry after government plans for marriage equality were leaked today (7 December).

They suggest Prime Minister David Cameron will allow same-sex marriage in churches and other religious buildings – if the religious authorities involved want to bless them.

This means he will risk a major battle with his party’s backbenchers, as well as with the Church of England who have spoken openly against marriage equality, the Evening Standard reports.

New York Gay WeddingsAs the news flashed around the globe that New York state had legalized gay marriage, New York fashion designer Malcolm Harris didn’t waste any time. He dashed off a Twitter message to his boyfriend of nine years: “‘Will you marry me?”

A city away, in Boston, Bernadette Smith decided to immediately relocate her business planning gay weddings to New York City.

In Brooklyn, pastors Ann Kansfield and Jennifer Aull received their first two requests to wed gay couples at their church in the borough’s Greenpoint section. They scheduled one for Labor Day weekend. Even as supporters of gay marriage celebrated victory in New York on Saturday, preparations were being made to make gay weddings a reality in the state.
