Check Out Portland’s Bi Brigade

Saturday, June 28th, 2014

There are few resources available in mainstream LGBT media intended specifically for bisexual people. Most resources are limited to those who are monosexual — those who are primarily Portland Bi Brigadeattracted to only one gender. While many LGBT organizations include B in the acronym, few actually provide bi-specific resources.

A group of bisexuals based in Portland, Ore., is trying to change that with a self-produced series of videos and interactive blogs. Bi Brigade seeks to offer insight and advice from bisexual people, for bisexual people. The group launched its first video last month, and provided The Advocate with a sneak peek into the project.

“We intend to destroy monosexism through the creation of visible, valuable, and tangible bisexual community,” Cameron Kude, the creator of Bi Brigade, tells The Advocate.

USA, Oregon: Teen Uses Bar Mitzvah Speech to Call for Marriage Equality

Sunday, December 1st, 2013

Duncan McAlpine SennettA little happy for your Sunday morning – watch as a teenager speaks out for marriage equality at his Bar Mitzvah.

The Advocate reports:

The case for marriage equality is so important to 13-year-old Duncan McAlpine Sennett that he used his Bar Mitzvah to deliver a persuasive argument to his guests. It’s been such a success that more than 20,000 people have already watched his five-minute talk at the Congregation Beth Israel in Portland, Oregon. Voters there will soon consider whether to make same-sex marriage legal.

I think it’s amazing to see kids like this speaking out for us – Duncan links the Torah to support for marriage equality. And he’s cute as a button. Made me a little misty eyed watching it.

USA, Oregon: Gay and Lesbian Couples Crossing the Border to Marry in Washington State

Tuesday, November 26th, 2013

Vancouver, Washington

Vancouver, Washington

Now that Oregon has declared that it will recognize same-sex marriages from other states, gay lesbian couples in Portland are crossing the border in large numbers to marry in southern Washington.

The Columbian reports:

Portlanders Grant Edwards and Jim McPartland “waited and waited” to get married. They’d been living together for seven years. They wanted the world to know about their solid commitment. The only obstacle was a maddeningly simple one: according to state law that’s been affirmed by popular referendum, you can’t get married in Oregon if you’re gay. In late October, Edwards and McPartland stopped waiting. Jim has suffered some health scares recently, and the couple want to be sure Grant has no problem holding his beloved’s hand during any future hospital stay. So they went ahead and got their wedding license — in Clark County…

“We just think it’s crazy that we have to go to the state of Washington and legally get married, and now Oregon will recognize that marriage. And yet, gay Oregonians cannot get married in their own churches and have that recognized by the state. That is some bizarre law,” McPartland said. Bizarre or just businesslike, the new legal loophole amounts to a bistate bridge that’s carrying loads of same-sex couples across the border from hoping to hitched. Clark County marriage license applications jumped by nearly 50 percent in the 12 business days after Oregon’s Oct. 18 legal decision, according to a hand count by The Columbian. Two-thirds of all licenses after that day were for same-sex couples and 90 percent of those were from out of state — the vast majority from Oregon.

By the time Oregon gets around to voting on marriage equality next November, there may not be any same-sex couples left to marry!

USA, Oregon: Fifteen Portland Start-Ups Announce Marriage Equality Support

Thursday, November 21st, 2013

Portland SkylineA group of Portland-area start-ups has just announced support for the marriage equality initiative in the state.

The Oregonian reports:

Fifteen of the Portland area’s most prominent young tech companies issued a letter this morning backing marriage equality in the state, joining Intel, Nike and several other large Oregon companies and business associations. Executives from the companies backed a forthcoming ballot initiative that would legalize gay marriage in the state. “It’s very much in the spirit with which we operate our business. It seems to be fair. It’s not very complicated,” said Josh Reich, chief executive of Portland startup Simple Finance Technology Corp., which offers online and mobile banking services. The company, which operates under the name Simple, just crossed 75,000 customers.

Have you noticed that the other side almost never announces new supporters? The momentum is now all on our side. If the initiative qualifies, they will go to the ballot next November.
