Italy: Rome Civil Unions Registry Planned, Mayor Says

On Top Magazine reports:

Ignazio Marino, the mayor of Rome, on Saturday announced he would back plans for a civil union registry and the registration of gay couples’ foreign marriages. According to the blog Agere per Formulas, Marino made his announcement moments before the start of Rome’s Gay Pride Parade, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The news comes after Fano late last month became the first Italian town to register the marriage of a gay couple without a court order and Luigi De Magistris, the mayor of Naples, signaled his willingness to register the foreign marriages of gay couples.

On Top Magazine reports:

Luigi De Magistris, the mayor of Naples, Italy, has signaled his willingness to register the foreign marriages of gay and lesbian couples. The news, provided by the blog Agere per Formulas, comes after Fano on Friday became the first Italian town to register the marriage of a gay couple without a court order.

It’s another crack in the wall of Catholic-dominated Italy’s homophobic culture.

Florida, USA: Another City Approves a Domestic Partner Registry

IFloridan more news of small town action on gay rights, Tavares, Florida just passed an ordinance setting up a domestic partner registry for gay and lesbian couples. On Top Magazine reports:

The Florida city voted 4-1 to become the first in Lake County with such a registry. The registry will be set up by May 1. Gay and straight couples who register their relationships are extended benefits such as hospital visitation, emergency notifications, jail visits and funeral decisions, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Milan, Italy Starts Civil Union Registry for Same Sex CouplesThe city of Milan, Italy opened a “civil union” registry on September 18, allowing the first formal recognition for same-sex unions.

The first couple to enter their names in the registry were Paolo Hutter and Paolo Oddi. Hutter, a former member of the city council, is a veteran gay-rights activists who staged same-sex “marriages” at the mayor’s office 20 years ago.

Italy: Milan to Start Civil Union Registry; Catholic Church ObjectsThe Catholic Church in Italy has declared that the introduction of civil partnerships demanded by gays, lesbians and their supporters could “legitimise polygamy”.

The bizarre warning came after Milan’s liberal mayor, Giuliano Pisapia, announced that the city was to begin a register of civil unions.

Although largely symbolic, Mr Pisapia said that his plan would provide some additional legal rights for cohabiting couples who were unable to marry.

OH: Appeals Court Affirms Legality of Cleveland’s Domestic Partner Registry

Opponents of the city’s domestic partner registry lost another battle in court, with an appeals court upholding the dismissal of their suit against the registry. A three-judge panel of the Eighth Ohio District Court of Appeals ruled unanimously on September 30, agreeing with Common Pleas Judge Joseph D. Russo, who dismissed the suit in November 2009.

The case was brought by Cleveland Taxpayers for the Ohio Constitution, a group formed for the purpose, and Cleveland resident Dorothy McGuire. Their suit argued that the registry contravened the Ohio constitution’s marriage ban amendment.

The amendment’s second sentence reads, “This state and its political subdivisions shall not create or recognize a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance or effect of marriage.”
