South Dakota Restaurant Makes Employee Wear “Gaytard” Name Badge

Thursday, June 26th, 2014

Gaytard name tagHeres one for all those folks who say there is no discrimination against gays and lesbians in the workplace.

Queerty reports:

Fast food restaurants are always looking for convenient ways to make your life easier, and a Taco John’s in South Dakota has come up with a remarkable new innovation. The Yankton restaurant made a 16-year-old employee named Tyler Brandt wear a nametag reading “Gaytard,” making it simple and convenient for consumers to identify Tyler as a retarded homosexual. Great idea! Tyler claims the manager forced him to endure lots of abuse, and didn’t want to jeopardize his job so he went along with it, miserably. Finally, after the nametag ordeal, he quit.

The manager is a disgusting excuse for a human being. But under South Dakota law, what he did was perfectly legal. Under US law too.

You Gotta Watch This “What Would You Do?” Segment

Thursday, June 19th, 2014

In a recent segment on “What Would You Do?”, the show filmed a gay couple in a restaurant in Mississippi. reports:

ABC News’ John Quinones took his “What Would You Do?” hidden cameras down to Vicksburg, Mississippi. As you may recall, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant recently signed a bill into law allowing business to discriminate against gays based on religious beliefs. Quinones placed a gay couple in a Mexican restaurant to see the reactions they would elicit in various scenarios after it became clear to other customers that they are together. The show even went so far as to kick the couple out in order to see what would happen.

Watch it through to the end to see how two straight college students stood up for the couple. It made me cry.

Dallas LGBT Community Planning a Road Trip to Homophobic Restaurant

Friday, May 30th, 2014

Big Earl's signA group from the Dallas LGBT community is planning to visit the East Texas restaurant that told a gay couple “we don’t serve fags here.”

CBS reports:

“I think the restaurant better learn to adapt or they will probably have to close their doors soon,” says Kyle, who identifies himself as a gay man. He and others in the Dallas LGBT community are planning to make a road trip to Big Earl’s. “I think it’s a fantastic idea and I’ll be there,” says Gary Burns. “There’s no reason not to just go and embrace those people and to love them and hug them and say ‘hey, we’re human beings too’.”

The restaurant is ready:

If there’s any problems, they will be taken care of appropriately,” says Christina Cheney, who is Big Earl’s daughter and the waitress who made the homophobic remark. “We are aware that they are attempting to come out here. We’re ready for them; we have informed the Sheriff’s department and the state.” And while Big Earl’s says they have received an influx of new customers since news came out, they should expect a new crowd in Pittsburg, especially with reviews like this from Bubba on Yelp: “Well, the food isn’t all that good, but this is still the best gay cruiser joint in Texas! I’ve picked up several dates there. All are very handsome, very gay men. I hear the owner offers discounts to men in chaps.”

Let’s hope things don’t get out of hand.

Texas Restaurant Discriminates Against Gay Couple

Thursday, May 29th, 2014

Big Earl's sign

A Texas restaurant told a gay couple they didn’t serve their kind.

Joe.My.God reports:

“We don’t serve fags here.” That’s what a Pittsburg couple said they were told while leaving a local restaurant. The men went to eat at Big Earl’s Restaurant in Pittsburg for breakfast Tuesday morning. They said they enjoyed their food, paid for their meals, but it’s what the waitress said on their way out that ruined the whole experience. Collin Dewberry, who was leaving with his partner, said the waitress told them they do not serve a certain type of person at that restaurant.

The word she used was derogatory and targets homosexuals. Collin and his partner Kelly Williams said they have lived in East Texas their whole lives and have never been called that word before. “We’ve never had that kind of hate displayed to us before,” Dewberry said. They explained that the waitress then recited the following phrase: “Here at Big Earl’s we like for men to act like men and for ladies to act like ladies, so we want you to never return.” They had eaten, paid, and had no idea they had done anything wrong. “It was just so nonchalantly, almost like she was reading a piece of paper,” he said. Well, she was. That phrase is posted on a piece of paper on the front door of the restaurant.

Hopefully when word gets around, they won’t be serving anyone.

USA, New Jersey: Did Waitress Lie About Anti Gay Note on Receipt?

Tuesday, November 26th, 2013

6a00d8341c730253ef019b01ac64c8970d-800wiA couple accused of leaving an anti-gay note on a restaurant receipt in New Jersey is coming forward to say they didn’t do it.

Towleroad reports:

Now a family has come forward claiming that Morales doctored the receipt and that they have the real copy, with an $18 tip that they gave to her, NBC 4 reports: They also provided a document they said was a Visa bill, which appears to indicate their card was charged for the meal plus the tip, for a total of $111.55. The couple told NBC 4 New York that they believed their receipt was used for a hoax. The wife says she is left-handed and could not have made the slash in the tip line, which she said looks to be drawn from the right.

So who is telling the truth here? You get two copies of the receipt with the space for the tip when you go to a restaurant, so it makes sense that the note would not be on the customer copy. But the fact that the customer can show that the tip was charged on their bill does throw the waitress’s statement and the question. What do you think?

Arkansas, USA: Restaurant Turns Away LGBT Center Fundraiser, Compares Group to KKK

Sunday, February 17th, 2013

ArkansasLovely. A restaurant owner in Fort Smith, Arkansas, has turned away a proposed fundraiser for an LGBT community center, explaining that if he opened the door to the gays, he’d have to let the KKK in too. Think Progress reports:

I called them and told them that I — we’re not going to have that at Sisters, we had no plans for that and there were no reservations to hold any kind of fundraiser or anything like that. I told them that I do not support their cause, that if they want to do that that’s their business. I do not care, but I don’t support their lifestyle and their cause. What I told the lady on the on the phone, look I said if the KKK came here and wanted to hold a fundraiser rally and all that, I wouldn’t allow that either. This is a private club and I have the right to refuse service to anyone.

Because they’re basically the same, right?

USA: Chick-fil-A Tries to Walk Back President’s Anti Gay Comments

Friday, July 20th, 2012

Chick-fil-AToo late, Chick-Fil-A, the blowback begins. You donate to anti-gay causes, and believe in a biblical business model that does in fact discriminate against marriage equality. Perhaps its leadership forgot all of the states where gay and lesbian couples are indeed legally married. And a lot of homos (and allies) will keep their green dollars out of your establishments. From its Facebook post, trying some damage control:

“The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect – regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender. We will continue this tradition in the over 1,600 Restaurants run by independent Owner/Operators. Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.

“Chick-fil-A is a family-owned and family-led company serving the communities in which it operates. From the day Truett Cathy started the company, he began applying biblically-based principles to managing his business. For example, we believe that closing on Sundays, operating debt-free and devoting a percentage of our profits back to our communities are what make us a stronger company and Chick-fil-A family.”

Chick-fil-A Proud of Anti Gay Stance

Wednesday, July 18th, 2012

Chick-fil-AFast-food chain Chick-fil-A — embroiled in a recent controversy surrounding the millions of dollars it donated to anti-gay organizations — has three words for gay rights advocates: “Guilty as charged.”

Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy, in an interview with the Baptist Press, said his company’s position supporting “traditional marriage” is based on values rooted in the Bible, and that he intends to “stay the course,” which has included donating to Exodus International, one of the world’s largest promoters of “ex-gay” therapy.
