Two Photographers for Two Brides

Monday, April 4th, 2016

I learn something new every wedding, but same-sex weddings have offered me some creative twists in my wedding planning education. The first time I had a lesbian wedding with two diva brides, I learned the hard way.

With a bride and a groom, there’s no competition for the photographers – the groom only wants to be in as many pictures as the bride puts him in. He’s not looking to have a lens in his face while he’s dressing. But when you have a same-sex wedding with two brides wearing wedding gowns — or even two brides who are divas in their own right — you need more than one camera shooting in two places at the same time.

Check out my blog in Pridezillas that explains my experience and my logic behind this recommendation. Learn from my mistakes, don’t repeat them.

Mexico: Christian Group Halts Wedding, Claiming Grooms are Mentally Ill

Sunday, January 11th, 2015

Baja California - Apple MapsA same sex couple who had planned to marry Saturday had their wedding stopped by a spiteful “Christian” woman who first refused to give the grooms a mandatory pre-marital talk, and then claimed they were mentally ill for getting angry with her:

Saturday’s ceremony had been on the civil registry’s calendar for weeks. Hours after a spokesman for the city had confirmed early in the day that the wedding would take place, a top city official said the event had been canceled due to a complaint that the two men “suffer from madness.” The accuser was Angelica Guadalupe Gonzalez Sanchez, president of the Coalition of Baja California Families, who with her husband gives mandatory pre-marital talks to couples preparing for civil wedding ceremonies at Mexicali City Hall. In her complaint, Gonzalez said the pair had been “aggressive and impertinent” on Thursday after she refused to certify their attendance in her talk, and her husband told them that the sessions were intended for heterosexual couples.

One protester, David Mesa, a Christian pastor, said that he was morally and legally opposed to same-sex marriage, “because of what this could mean for the future, such as the adoption of infants, that’s our motive and nothing else.” A top municipal official, Jose Felix Arango Perez, told reporters early Saturday afternoon that “on our part, there were no obstacles. … However, the submission of the complaint by this individual obligates us to suspend the legal ceremony.” He said it is now up to the state’s family court system to resolve the issue. But a member of the Mexicali City Council, Abraham Medina, said, “I think it’s nothing more than an excuse. … They’re just doing this to buy time. I don’t know why they are making these people go through this torment.”

It still amazes me the lengths some people will go to prevent loving same sex couples from getting married.

Scranton Wedding Venue Turns Away Lesbian Couple

Friday, July 11th, 2014

Inne of the Abingtons - Scranton

Marriage equality may have come to Pennsylvania, but not everyone got the memo.

Joe.My.God reports:

A wedding venue near Scranton is refusing to host same-sex ceremonies: When Pennsylvania’s gay marriage ban was ruled unconstitutional by a federal court, Desiree Mark of Greenfield Twp. abandoned her plans to be married in New York or Connecticut and happily focused on planning a wedding in her home state. When the 29-year-old sent queries to Scranton area wedding venues requesting an appointment, she learned that marriage equality does not mean equality for gays and lesbians. “Unfortunately, we do not hold same sex marriages at our facility,” read the email from Courtney Killeen, wedding and event planner for Inne at the Abingtons. “I truly do hope you find somewhere that will fulfill all your wedding dreams.”

Met at the North Abington Twp. venue Thursday, Ms. Killeen confirmed the email was authentic and reflected the policy of the Inne, not her personal belief. “I don’t agree with it,” she said, adding the owner, John O. Antolick, would be unlikely to comment publicly. Mr. Antolick did not respond to several requests for an interview.

As Joe points out, it’s perfectly legal for the venue to discriminate against same sex couples this way, as Pennsylvania has no protections for the LGBT community in state law. Efforts to pass such a bill have been repeatedly blocked by the GOP majority.

USA, Washington DC: Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor Officiates at Same Sex Wedding

Wednesday, October 30th, 2013

US Supreme CourtAnother US Supreme Court Justice, the retired Sandra Day ‘Connor, just officiated at a same sex wedding at the court.

The Dallas Voice reports:

For the second time since June, a gay couple married at the United States Supreme Court. Retired Justice Sandra Day O’Connor officiated at the wedding of Jeffrey Trammell and Stuart Serkin of Washington on Tuesday, the Associated Press reported. In June, the Supreme Court justices stopped short of legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide but struck down a federal law barring benefits for spouses in same-sex marriages.

O’Connor follows in the footsteps of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who officiated at a same sex wedding there on August.

USA, Pennsylvania: 30 Methodist Pastors to Buck Church, Marry Gay Couple Next Month

Monday, October 21st, 2013

Pennsylvania mapIn what may be an unprecedented act, thirty Eastern Pennsylvania pastors are joining together to support a colleague on trial for officiating at a same sex wedding by doing one of their own.

Philly.com reports:

The colleague is the Rev. Frank Schaefer, who faces a Nov. 18 church trial in Chester County for officiating at the 2007 marriage between his son and another man. Schaefer’s fellow pastors call that an act of love, not a prosecutable offense. They gathered Thursday at a Philadelphia church and, after more than two hours, agreed to preside as a group at a same-sex marriage, a step they hope jolts the larger church. “Out of respect and out of honor of his commitment to his family, he’s done this,” said the Rev. Robin Hynicka of Philadelphia’s Arch Street United Methodist Church, where the meeting was held. “Talk about family values, right. Let’s give it its due.”

Now the neighboring New Jersey has fully embraced marriage equality, can Pennsylvania be far behind?

USA, Alabama: Retired Methodist Bishop Plans to Marry Same-Sex Couple

Tuesday, October 15th, 2013

Bishop Melvin G. Talbert

Retired United Methodist Church Bishop from Tennessee is planning to marry a gay couple in Alabama, against the wishes of the presiding Bishop.

Edge Boston reports:

Bishop Melvin G. Talbert, who has been active in efforts to eliminate barriers to gay marriage from United Methodist doctrine, said it will be an honor to officiate at the ceremony later this month in metro Birmingham for Joe Openshaw and Bobby Prince. Talbert said he was contacted by the longtime partners after they learned they could not be married in the area church where they are active members. While Alabama does not recognize same-sex marriage, the men were married legally in Washington, D.C., last month, Openshaw said. He and Prince want to have a church ceremony at home in Alabama for their family and friends.

The marriage equality movement is reaching even into the deep South. It’s gratifying to see it.

USA, New Jersey: Lambertville Mayor Wants to Perform State’s First Same Sex Wedding

Monday, September 30th, 2013

Lambertville, NJ - Apple Maps

from Apple Maps

David DelVecchhio, Mayor of Lambertville, a small town in New Jersey, wants to be the first to perform a same sex wedding in the state.

Towleroad.com reports:

Last year Lambertville Mayor David DelVecchhio was named New Jersey’s Mayor Of The Year. Today he vowed to perform that state’s first same-sex marriage if Governor Chris Christie’s appeal is unsuccessful. DelVecchio, a Democrat, said he will perform the state’s first legal gay marriage ceremony for Beth Asaro and Joanne Schailey at midnight three weeks from today, as long as a judge doesn’t grant a stay of the Sept. 27 ruling. A handful of couples has already expressed interest in weddings, he said. Lambertville, across the Delaware River from New Hope, Pennsylvania, has a large gay population.

Maybe he can convince the Mayor of New Hope to do one, too?

USA, Maine: “Poppy” Bush Witnesses Same-Sex Wedding

The first President Bush witnessed a same-sex wedding in Maine this last weekend.

Pink News reports:

Former President George H Bush and his wife, Barbara, have served as two of the official witnesses at a same-sex marriage ceremony of two long standing friends. The weekend wedding of Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen took place in Maine. Ms Clement told the Washington Post: “This is such a wonderful time for change in our legal system. Who would be best to help us acknowledge the importance of our wedding as our friends and as the former leader of the free world. When they agreed to do so we just felt that it was the next acknowledgment of being ‘real and normal’.”

So now we’ve got the really old Republicans and the really young ones on our side – how do we get everyone in the middle?
