USA: Kerry Says Married Binational Same Sex Couples Officially Eligible for Visas

Saturday, August 3rd, 2013

US Secretary of State John KerryIt’s official – binational same sex couples now have a way to avoid deportation once and for all. Just get married. The Advocate reports:

Following the lead of the Department of Homeland Security, Secretary of State John Kerry announced Friday that the U.S. State Department will immediately begin offering visas to married same-sex couples in the same fashion it does to married opposite-sex couples. Kerry made the announcement at the U.S. Embassy in London Friday morning, citing the recent landmark rulings from the Supreme Court in support of marriage equality. “One of our most important exports by far is America’s belief in the equality of all people,” said Kerry. “Now, our history shows that we haven’t always gotten it right.”

It’s refreshing to see something so devastating to so many couples finally settled definitively in their favor, isn’t it?

Iowa, USA: Secretary of State Wants Voter ID Law to Help Repeal Marriage Equality

Wednesday, April 17th, 2013

Iowa Secretary of State Matt SchultzThey’re not even bothering to hide it anymore. Another republican, Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz, admits voter id laws have nothing to do with protecting the vote. Think Progress reports:

Matt Schultz (R), elected in the Tea Party wave of 2010, spoke at length about his support for implementing voter ID in a speech before the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition on Monday. In the process he accused the other side of cheating in order to win elections, but provided no evidence to back up this claim: SCHULTZ: There are a whole lot of issues that we care about, abortion, gay marriage, a whole lot of social issues that we care deeply about. But you have to start caring about voter ID and election integrity as well, because if you don’t have that, you’ll never be able to make a difference in any other issue you care about. Never. Because they will cheat! They’ll cheat. And we need to make sure we stop them. So what do I need you to do? I need you start telling your friends and neighbors that you love voter ID. You love voter ID.

Yes, it’s the democrats who cheat at elections. Which is why the GOP has to keep adding new restrictions to remain a viable party.

Hillary Clinton: Gay Rights a Foreign Concept in Africa and Asia

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

Hillary ClintonEchoing her landmark speech to the United Nations, the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton told an audience at Syracuse University that many foreign leaders in Africa and Asia consider gay rights and indeed womens’ rights to be a “totally foreign concept.”

“You can imagine the conversations that I have,” she said. “In parts of Africa and Asia, she said, gay rights is ‘just a totally foreign concept.'”

She added to much laughter: “I mean, the first response is, ‘We don’t have any of those here. Second response is, ‘If we did, we would not want to have them and would want to get rid of them as quickly as possible. And it’s your problem, United States of America, that you have so many of those people. So don’t come here and tell us to protect the rights of people we don’t have or that we don’t want.'”

ME: Secretary of State Verifies Signatures, Gives Marriage Equality Go-Ahead for Ballot

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

Maine Marriage Equality on the BallotThe Maine Secretary of State today confirmed that enough signatures have been verified to place a Citizens’ Initiative allowing same-sex couples to receive marriage licenses on the November ballot.

“Just as my own thinking has evolved on this issue, more and more people in Maine are coming to understand that loving, committed same-sex couples should not be denied the freedom to marry,” said Pastor Michael Gray of Old Orchard Beach United Methodist Church and the citizens initiative’s lead signer. “We gathered signatures from voters in more than 450 towns all over Maine, and those people signed the petition because they want the chance to vote on this issue again so their gay and lesbian family, friends and neighbors can have access to marriage licenses.”

Advocates turned in more than 105,000 signatures from 453 towns and cities on Jan. 26. According to the Secretary of State, 85,216 of those signatures have been verified, far surpassing the 57,277 required.
