Seriously? Enough is Enough

Thursday, November 6th, 2014

Seriously? Here at Marriage Equality Watch, we have made it a habit of discussing the wackadoodle things that marriage equality opponents say – from comparing gay marriage to all kinds of things – chairs, tables, napkins and more, to the series of stock phrases we’ve grown so accustomed to:

–The will of the people
–Unelected judges
–“So Called” marriage
–Traditional marriage
–Natural marriage
–Thwarting
–Shoving down our throats

Then there are the more extreme claims – that gays want to adopt children to rape them; that transgender people are stalking young girls in bathrooms, and this week’s assertion that gay people are flavoring Starbucks coffee with “sodomite semen”. Seriously.

Well, after this week’s midterm elections, I’m done with it. I’ve decided it’s time we no longer give these folks, who have hatred in their hearts, a platform, even if the intent is to ridicule them.

I sometimes feel like those folks who work for the search engines who spend day and night looking at pictures showing the worst of humanity to screen them out for everyone else. It marks your soul.

So we are no longer going to publish all the stupid, inane, hurtful, nasty, bigoted, crazy things these folks say. We’ll use that time instead to expand our positive coverage in other areas.

So I bid Bryan Fischer, Tony Perkins, Pat Robertson, Pastor James David Manning, Eugene Delguadio, Brian Brown, Matt Barber, James Dobson, Linda Harvey, and their ilk goodbye, and good riddance.

My soul needs a litte light.

Seriously? Here’s the the latest in our ongoing series of some of the crazy things the anti-gay marriage equality opponents are saying and doing around the world.

Gays Are Created by Sexual Abuse And Distant Fathers

That’s the gist of Christopher Doyle’s argument for ex-gay therapy:

“Homosexual feelings are often the result of underlying sexual trauma or emotional detachment from same-sex peers and parents – when individuals realize the source of their feelings and pursue healing in their lives, change happens. In my work with the International Healing Foundation, so much of our ministry is dedicated to working with church leadership to help them better understand how to minister to those who experience SSA – we’re helping them transform their pews from one of judgment and condemnation to hope and healing.”

Speaking for my own experience, I was never sexually abused as a child. And I was always close to my father. In fact, in recent years, we become even closer. And guess what? Still gay.

Gay Marriage Will Make Me Stop Worshiping the Lord

Don Boyd, a right-wing wingnut, submitted a motion to intervene in the South Carolina marriage equality case:

“DON BOYD, MUSICIAN AND PSALMIST, Anointed and Assigned as a Watchmen of the souls of the people errantly calling themselves lesbian and gay WOULD PURSUE DISMISSAL of what is in essence and in truth a RELIGIOUS matter couched of late as a secular deprivation of constitutional rights by the Gay Agenda (of said people errantly identifying and calling themselves lesbian and gay) apostate and rebellious from The Most High GOD and Creator LORD of all the Earth, covetous of the Portion of those marrying and given in marriage in this world, troubled and incited of that Wicked One Lucifer the Devil unto discontent with Divine Constraint their Portion and glorious Calling in this life unto Reward of the Next. [snip] Any ratifying of gay “marriage” would compel me to leave off worshipping THE LORD with music and psalms – free exercise of my religion – to assume the life of a protester and wedding crasher.”

Seriously, if your faith is weak enough that two guys down the street getting married is enough to end your devotion to God, your faith isn’t very strong.

Were Totally Gonna Boycott Starbucks More

The folks over at The National Organization for Marriage, who been boycotting Starbucks for years, are apoplectic about the new ad featuring two drag queens:

“The pro-same-sex marriage corporate behemoth Starbucks has taken its ideologically-driven LGBT agenda to a new level with a new ad featuring two reality TV star drag queens. The ad feature Bianca Del Rio and Adore Delano, two drag queens from a reality TV show on the LGBT network, OUTtv. Thus Starbucks continues to serve up a healthy dose of ideology added in with the cream and sugar in its cups of coffee. It’s as good a reason as ever to Dump Starbucks if you haven’t made the commitment to do so already.”

As Joe my God points out, their petition for the boycott, after three years, has just 70,000 signatures. But most of them were probably already getting their coffee at Dunkin’ Donuts instead.

London is the City of Cosmopolitan Poofters

David Little, the UKIP candidate for Dover, Kent, posted a racist and homophobic graphic on his Facebook page:

A candidate standing to be a British MP for UKIP has drawn criticism after posting a cartoon image on his Facebook page that refers to London as being full of “cosmopolitan poofters” and Africa as “Bongo Bongo Lands”.

Stay classy, UKIP.

Marrying Gays Would Put My Soul At Risk

A magistrate in North Carolina who quit rather than have to marry same sex couples is in fear for his very soul:

“I prayed about it; I asked for wisdom. I think our hearts have been led away by the cares of the world, our desires, and ultimately, our intense arrogance – our hubris – against the Lord. We’ve rejected the prime authority of the scriptures, something our nation’s Founding Fathers, such as John Adams, knew better than to do… In both the Old and New Testaments, homosexuality is something the Lord does not approve of, and since He doesn’t, I could not put the sanction of the state on a relationship that runs afoul of scripture. I hate to wax it so biblical but it says, ‘What good is it for a man to gain the whole world but lose his own soul?’ So that’s the stakes I put on this.”

Yes, because Jesus never showed compassion for the outcasts and downtrodden of society, so he totally wouldn’t approve of you doing so with same sex couples.

Let’s Push Out the Lesbian Extremist Mayor

Matt Barber wants to “strike while the iron is hot” and recall Houston’s openly lesbian mayor:

“Should we make an example of her? Absolutely. I was born in Waco, Texas, and lived in Houston, so I’ve got a dog in this hunt. Really, we all do. Houston Mayor Annise Parker has disqualified herself from the privilege of serving the people of south Texas. She must either resign, effective immediately, or Houstonians should begin, without delay, the process of recalling her from office. Strike while the iron’s hot, I say, and right now it’s glowing cultural Marxist red. Parker has been caught, cold, with her hand in the totalitarian cookie jar. She has, on multiple counts, betrayed her oath of office. She’s put her own radical self-interests above the best interests of her constituents and has all but spit on the very U.S. Constitution she’s sworn to uphold. This woman (I’m loath to lend her credibility by calling her ‘Madam Mayor’) has revealed herself to be a single-issue-driven sexual extremist with zero regard for the rule of law.”

Let’s just put this in perspective. Mayor Parker AND the city council passed an ordinance protecting the rights of the LGBT community that had NOTHING to do with churches. These church groups, as is their right, collected signatures to put a repeal of the law on the ballot. They failed. They sued to contest the results of the signature counts. Also their right. But it was the churches who sued. The city asked for all the information about the meetings which were held to plan the petition drive, which were HELD IN CHURCHES. The Pastors freaked out, and claimed that they were the victims. The people suing the city to strip rights from the LGBT community.

Plus Joe.My.God notes this: “Hate group leader Matt Barber, who recently ran a column from an extremist who calls for executing all homosexuals.”

Tim Cook Might Bring Ebola to Russia

Showing his ignorance is as vast as the distance between US and Russia, St. Petersburg city council member Vitaly Milonov wants to ban the Apple CEO form visiting Russia:

“What could he bring us? The Ebola virus, AIDS, gonorrhea? They all have unseemly ties over there. Ban him for life.”

It should be noted that Milonov is an apple user. These conflations between AIDS and Ebola, and the implication that Ebola has something to do with being gay (carried by gays, God’s wrath for being gay) seems to be spreading faster than the disease itself.

I Don’t Care That Cook Is Gay. Except When He Talks About It

Tony Perkins thinks it’s fine that the Apple CEO is gay. He just doesn’t think Cook should talk about it:

“Apple’s old logo was colored by the rainbow — and it looks like their top management still is. Three years after taking the company over for an ailing Steve Jobs, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed what many people suspected: he identifies as a homosexual. Cook, the head of the tech world’s colossus, said he made the announcement because his predecessor had urged him to ‘be himself’ as the company’s chief executive. This may surprise liberals, but as far as I’m concerned, Cook’s sexuality is irrelevant. It only becomes an issue when homosexuals make it one — and use their businesses as a platform for radical activism.”

Things were so much better when the gays just sat quietly in their closets, weren’t they?

Gay Marriage Supporters Are Equality Nazis, Self-Hating Gay Says

Openly gay UKIP MP David Coburn seemed to take great glee in knocking members of his own community who fought so hard for marriage equality:

“What you’re doing with the gay marriage issue is you’re rubbing people’s noses in the dirt. Everyone had agreed and been quite happy with the idea of civil partnership, it was all bedded in and people were happy with it, they got used to the idea. But when you go across the road to pick a fight with someone of faith, that’s not got anything to do with it, that’s the equality Nazis trying to give Christianity a jolly good kicking. You know it, I know it, we all know it – it’s false bollocks, the lot of it.” He also said that LGBT rights advocates’ successful campaign for marriage equality in Scotland only matters to “some queen who wants to dress up in a bridal frock and dance up the aisle to the Village People.”

It’s bad enough to see such rank homophobia coming from anti-gay “christians”, but to see it from someone who should know better is truly disturbing.

Giving Gays Equal Rights Is Just Like Raping Travelers

Pat Robertson is incensed about the Houston LGBT rights ordinance, comparing it to the raping and death of a woman in the Bible:

Robertson said Judges 19 was a story of “militant homosexuals” who wanted to rape a Levite traveler in Gibeah but ended up raping his female concubine, who ultimately died. “These homosexuals abused her all night long,” Robertson said. Robertson suggested that Houston might face fate similar to that of the Benjaminites of Gibeah: “Benjamin had been annihilated. They had killed all the women, they had killed a good portion of the fighting men, they burned a number of their cities, it was a complete mess. Why? Because they had defended these rapist homosexuals. Is that a message for Houston? For someplace else in America?”

It strikes me that these people are all up in arms that some subpoenas were sent to group of pastors. But they’re totally fine with Pat Robertson and his ilk comparing gays and lesbians to rapists and murderers?

Climate Change Alarmists Promote Homosexuality to Control Population Growth

Wow, this one’s out of left field – Family Research Council president Tony Perkins manages to combine two of the right’s favorite boogeymen – climate change and gay rights – into one great fear-based money pitch:

A listener called in to tell the Family Research Council president that he thinks the reason homosexuality is “promoted is because it doesn’t lead to reproduction and that’s why it’s promoted. There’s this anti-life agenda, there’s a total anti-human, anti-life, human beings are a virus, type of mentality.” Perkins responded that the caller was “absolutely correct,” saying that he once wrote about how “climate change alarmists and those who are pushing population control” actually “promote homosexuality” because “there’s no procreation there. They go crazy, they deny it but the evidence is there, it’s footnoted in my book.”

Let’s take an informal survey – when were you first contacted by a climate change alarmist and turned gay? On the other hand, it’s great to know you’re doing your part for the environment every time you sleep around.

Lesbian Mayor Has Houston Under Totalitarian Rule

And Tony Perkins is back for another go-round, this time accusing Houston Mayor Anise Parker of being a totalitarian:

“It may be Halloween, but even Mayor Annise Parker can’t mask her real agenda. The Houston leader couldn’t have been clearer yesterday that while she may have withdrawn the churches’ subpoenas, she has no intention of withdrawing from the battle over fundamental democracy. Remember, this whole saga began when the Mayor pushed a bad special rights ordinance, which morphed into a voting rights violation when she discarded over 30,000 signed citizen petitions. From there, it mushroomed into an attack on the First Amendment, and pastors started to challenge her totalitarian rule. While we’d like to think yesterday’s move was the result of the Mayor’s changed heart, it’s more likely the result of overwhelming public pressure. No doubt the Mayor would like the national scrutiny to go away, but as long as she continues to use her power to intimidate voters, the spotlight will remain.”

Lest we forget, the city council passed the ordinance – it was not put into place by fiat. And the Mayor had nothing to do with the subpoenas, but did order them withdrawn once the religious right and Fox News turned up the heat.

Seriously? Here’s the the latest in our ongoing series of some of the crazy things the anti-gay marriage equality opponents are saying and doing around the world.

I Totally Don’t Understand What The First Amendment Says

Joe.My.God Points out that Bryan Fischer is mixing up his lies about the First Amendment. Speaking about the Houston pastor subpoenas, he said:

“The openly lesbian mayor of Houston, Annise Parker, has issued subpoenas for 17 different forms of communication, both public and private, from pastors who oppose her ‘bathroom bill,’ the ordinance that guarantees the right of men to walk in on your daughter while she’s in the shower at the local Y. In the process, she has violated every single right enshrined in the First Amendment. She has violated the right of these pastors to the free exercise of religion, because they are motivated by their sincerely held beliefs about gender differences that come from the Creator God who made us male and female. She has violated their rights to free speech, since she wants to shut them up. She wants to penalize them for speech they have already uttered. In fact, she wants to throw them in jail, because that’s what happens to people who defy subpoenas.”

But as Joe so cleverly points out:

Fischer has apparently forgotten his regular claim that the First Amendment only applies to Congress. From his September 17th column for OneNewsNow:

First, the amendment applies only to Congress. “Congress shall make no law…” No other entity is restrained by the First Amendment. Since the amendment applies only to Congress, it is legally, historically and constitutionally impossible for a state, a county commission, a city council, a school board, a school principal, a school teacher or a student to violate the First Amendment. This is for one simple reason: none of them is Congress. Violating the First Amendment is something only Congress can do.

Fischer has also claimed that the First Amendment only applies to Christians. Congress, obviously, includes many non-Christians:

I have contended for years that the First Amendment, as given by the Founders, provides religious liberty protections for Christianity only. Most attorney types, befuddled by years of untethered Supreme Court activism, think it covers any and all religions you can name. The results of this expansive but badly misguided understanding of the First Amendment have not been too costly to this point.

What a tangled web we weave when we practice to deceive.

Matthew Shepard’s Death is a Hate Crime Myth

ADF attorney Erik Stanley says the whole Matthew Shepard thing was a myth cooked up by gay activists to advance their agenda:

“It’s all part of a public relations strategy to portray gays as victims, ADF attorney Erik Stanley told those gathered at the Nashville conference, titled “The Gospel, Homosexuality, and the Future of Marriage.” That strategy was put forth, he said, in the the book After the Ball: How America Will Conquer Its Fear and Hatred of Gays in the 90’s, by Marshall Kirk and Hunter Madsen, which he cited as “a playbook for how to advance the homosexual agenda.” The book is now out of print. “Think of the narrative of the Matthew Shepard crime, which has now been debunked as a homosexual hate crime,” Stanley said, as an example of what he claimed are inaccurate depictions of gays as victims. “Think of hate-crimes laws.”

Unfortunately, some on our side are taking the bait, lending these charges credence, including Andrew Sullivan, who should know better.

Upscale Sodomites Spread Ebola At Starbucks

Pastor James David Manning, the anti-gay “christian” who regularly posts inflammatory anti-gay rhetoric on the sign at his Harlem Church, is back in our pages again:

“Starbucks coffee stores are indeed ground zero for spreading Ebola and other diseases, because of the clientele of Starbucks. Generally upscaled [sic] sodomites who frequent Starbucks, who sit there with their computers and it’s a meeting place, they exchange a lot of body fluids, hands shaken and contact. Stay away from Starbucks if you don’t want to get Ebola. And especially the Starbucks in the urban areas…”

Aside from the sheer nastiness of his allegations, there’s a danger to this man spreading misinformation on public health issues like Ebola. Let’s say it again for the record – you are highly unlikely to get Ebola from public contact – the disease is transmitted by contact with bodily fluids once a person is actually symptomatic, and even in the initial phases of symptoms, the viral count is very low, making transmission unlikely. Add to this the fact that any potential carriers of the disease are being closely monitored as they return from Africa.

It’s both irresponsible and immoral that this man is trying to spread misinformation in order to link Ebola to the LGBT community. The two have absolutely nothing to do with each other.

If I were Starbucks, I would sue.

Gay Dictator Obama Will Make You a Slave to Sodomites

Rick Wiles lives in his own little crazy world:

“If the mac daddy socialist Democratic party gets an old-fashioned thumping at the polls, it still doesn’t matter. Mr. Obama will simply crack down on all opposition, use government surveillance agencies to spy on his opponents, he’ll continue to issue presidential decrees and ignore the Congress, and rule the country like a dictator. Nothing’s going to change, except that he’s really going to step it up as a dictator… We’ve been taken over by homosexuals and sodomites, and lesbians and transvestites, and a bunch of communists and socialists and atheists and God-haters. And this country is about to be judged. If you’re here when this judgment strikes, you’re going to be consumed. The Lord has told me vast numbers are going to be consumed and the survivors will be slaves. That is the future that is facing America if this country does not repent and the time is ticking away.”

Yeah, President Obama has been such a dictator – look at the way he’s gotten what he wanted every single time… wait, this is the President they also call the most ineffective and weak of all time?

America is Following in the Footsteps of Sodom and Gomorrah

So says James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family:

“The outrageous behavior of the wicked men of Sodom and Gomorrah sealed their doom. Fire and brimstone fell from the sky on both cities and utterly destroyed them. I am convinced that America and other Western nations are sliding in the same direction. We have not yet reached the depravity of Sodom and Gomorrah, but that appears to be where we are headed. Many influential men and women of the judiciary are leading us toward perdition.”

Many biblical scholars agree that the fall of Sodom and Gomorrah had little or nothing to do with sexual practices, but with the horrible way they treated guests and visitors. So if that’s the case, who’s really leading the way to Sodom and Gomorrah? The gays, who marry with love, or people like you who seize every change to denigrate and belittle them?

Judicial Bigotry is a Breath of Fresh Air

NOM’s Brian Brown is thrilled with the Puerto Rican decision against marriage equality:

“The clear logic and devotion to the truth, and the dedication to the integrity of our legal system, are a breath of fresh air compared to so many other errant decisions that have been issued over the past few months.”

Yes, if you think it’s logical to allow your own biases to guide you in skipping more than 40 years of legal developments, to grasp at the very thin straw of one anti-marriage equality decision from 1972 as the entire basis for your legal opinion.

We’ll Go to Jail Rather Than Marry Gay Couples

That’s the message a group of anti-gay pastors are sending in Michigan:

“I don’t know of another example of pastors’ sermons being subpoenaed, except for in Nazi Germany and Communist Russia….”

“Let there be no doubt that, if you should decide to go forward with this grave injustice, I, every born again believer I know, as well as every pastor you see here today, shall disobey your unjust law. Here we stand, Black and White together, ready to go to jail!”

Except that there’s no law in the entire USA to send pastors to jail for not marrying same sex couples. If you are a public servant who has sworn to uphold the law, you might have to marry same sex couples if that’s the law in your state. But if you are a minister, no one is forcing you to do so, and no one wants to force you to do so.

The two cases these pastors cite are both bogus. The Idaho case involves a for-profit business. And no one was suing them. Instead, they were the ones who brought a lawsuit against the city! And guess what? Even in that case, the city said they didn’t have to marry same sex couples, even though NOT A SINGLE GAY COUPLE had asked to be married there.

And in Texas, where the city originally subpoenaed sermons from pastors, it’s in response to ANOTHER LAWSUIT BROUGHT BY CHRISTIANS AGAINST A CITY. The group is suing Houston for turning away a ballot initiative to repeal the new LGBT rights ordinance. Because the city is being sued, they have subpoenaed the documents from the meetings held with petition gatherers. And guess where these Pastors held their meetings for this political initiative campaign? In their churches.

It’s about time we set things straight here. No one is forcing these churches to do anything. And it’s the churches and right-wing Christians who are suing in these cases, not the other way around.

Stamping his foot like a five year old. I’d like to see how that goes over with all his straight married constituents.

Gay Rights Laws Will Allow the Rape and Murder of Young Boys in the Streets

Eugene Delguadio is upping the ante again on his latest money beg:

“These people admit that they want to molest our children. They admit that they want special rights that no American has. They admit that they want to infiltrate and weaken our military’s moral fiber. They admit that they want complete control over the national law enforcement apparatus. They admit that they’re deviants. And just as Jesus showed us by example and could not have stood back and done nothing at the Temple, I couldn’t stand back and do nothing in the face of the growing power of the radical Homosexual Agenda. I won’t allow my children to grow up in a nation where police are forced by gay ‘rights’ laws to allow sexual predators like ‘Uncle Ed’ Savitz and Jeffrey Dahmer to rape and murder young boys in the streets. And I won’t stand by while pro-homosexual school teachers expose our children to ‘gay filth and call it AIDS education.”

I’m not even sure how to respond to such naked hatred. What happened to this man to make him so twisted and sad? What a horrible excuse for a human being.

I’m Totally Gonna Take Out Cory Brooker [sic] With This Flier

Cory Brooker flier

Eugene Delguadio’s group, Public Advocate of the United States, sent out an unintentionally sexy mailer to try to defeat Cory Booker in new jersey – and couldn’t even get his name right. Bloomberg explains:

If you know that the name of New Jersey’s junior senator is “Cory Booker,” condolences: You cannot be a fact-checker for Public Advocate of the United States. That’s the group responsible for this mailer, which ostensibly supporters Booker’s underfunded challenger Jeff Bell, and reminds voters that Booker supports “homosexual ‘marriage'” (scare quotes in the original) and “the Gay Bill of Special Rights.” Like many fringe groups, it can be obscure one day and infamous the next — founder Eugene Delgaudio has been censured by the Loudoun County board of supervisors in Virginia (on which he serves), and Public Advocate earned “hate group” designation from the Southern Poverty Law Center after it started labeling anti-gay organizations as such.

Delguadio, you’re a washed-up joke. But thanks for the great gay kiss!

Gays Want Everyone to Go to Hell with Them

Continuing the theme, Colorado statehouse candidate and wingnut Gordon Klingenschmitt has us marriage equality activists all figured out:

“They want your soul. They won’t be satisfied with your money. They don’t really want the t-shirts. They want your soul. They want you to disobey God so that you go to Hell with them. It’s not enough that they go to Hell for disobeying God, they want you to disobey God so that we all go to Hell. That’s the Devil’s goal in the end.”

You see, it has nothing to do with wanting equal rights, or a stable relationship to raise our kids, or the same tax treatment as straight couples. We are going to hell, and we want to take everyone else down with us. On the plus side, I suspect we’ll see Mr. Klingenschmitt there as well.

Gays Are Making Marriage Meaningless

A new video tries to make the argument that marriage should be for gays only because gays can’t have kids with the same DNA:

“The two become one, and their union as one is s real and complete that it can literally bring a third person into their relationship. This new person has the man and woman’s marital union permanently stamped into their own body, which consists of half the man’s DNAn and half of the woman’s DNA… new life requires intense nurturing and support which marriage solves by ensuring that both the man and woman will always be there as a father and a mother for any union that a marriage creates. Marriage then calls for a total commitment that’s then permanent and monogamous, meaning it’s solely between these two people forever.”

In other words, you can’t have kids together with the same DNA, and you will never be monogamous. I had to laugh when they said that marriage ensured straight couples would be monogamous… how’s that working out for them? It’s an ugly argument wrapped in a pretty package.

Gays Have Silenced The Church

Rick Santorum is upset that the gays have silenced the church on homosexuality:

“I really believe in this subject matter at hand with the gay community that a Judeo-Christian worldview cannot survive with a worldview that is as rabidly secular as this movement is. One is going to battle the other and I can tell you that the statists, these secular statists, do not want the competition that comes from the church and so they are going to do everything they can to marginalize them, to force them out of the public square to be quiet… We’re losing in this particular area among young people. … it’s because they have effectively silenced the church on a lot of these issues and young people don’t even know what the opposing view is on these issues.”

So when’s that going to start? The Catholic Church wasn’t so silent on homosexuality this last week when a bunch of anti-gay bishops forced the removal of language welcoming gays to the church from a church document. Evangelical churches don’t seem to be particularly silent on the matter. And of course, when Santorum talks about “the church”, he means conservative Christian churches. There are whole lot of other churches out there that are not only not silent but are actively supportive of the LGBT community.

Our Straight Marriage is Property, and the Gays Are Stealing It Pt II

Sunnivie Brydum at the Advocate takes down that insane brief filed by a straight Kansas couple:

“Clearly the Plaintiffs seek to redefine the marriage word the Unruhs and thousands like them in Kansas use to describe their relationship in order to extend marriage to them. If Plaintiffs are successful marriage will no longer be as it has been defined. In fact the court decision upon which Plaintiffs rely Kitchen v. Herbert [citation removed], leaves the word marriage undefined. Can a word exist without a definition? What is marriage after the Kitchen Courts fundamental restructuring of the concept? Can the rule of law survive the dismantling of key words like marriage? Should the proper application of principals of equality have such a result?”

If a tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound? These are all, I’m sure, important questions. So no marriage for you.
