Seriously? What Marriage Equality Opponents Are Saying – October 23rd

Thursday, October 23rd, 2014

Seriously? Here’s the the latest in our ongoing series of some of the crazy things the anti-gay marriage equality opponents are saying and doing around the world.

Judges Are the Only Ones Who Overwhelmingly Support Gay Marriage

That’s Tony Perkins’ Contention in response to Pres. Obama’s statement that the Constitution says that gays and lesbians deserve marriage equality in all 50 states:

“The only place where there seems to be an overwhelming consensus on redefining marriage is in the chambers of 25 unelected judges, who have been arrogant enough to substitute their agendas for the will of 13 states. For now, the states are continuing to put up a fight, right down to the local officials forced to carry out the courts’ bidding. In Idaho, site of the first ministers ordered to perform gay ‘weddings’ or be imprisoned, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy is giving the state a brief reprieve by putting a hold on the ceremonies for now. While the two sides appeal the Ninth Circuit ruling that struck down Idaho’s law, the Knapps — and other ordained ministers — will hold their breaths, hoping the same country that gave them conscience rights won’t jail the couple for exercising them.”

As we reported yesterday, the whole Idaho story is based on a stack of lies. And Perkins is also conveniently ignoring a new poll that shows public support for marriage equality is as strong as ever. So much for the supposed will of the people.

Men Skipping Hand in Hand To Adoption Centers To Pick Out a Little Boy

Okay this is saying something, but this statement by anti-gay wingnut Eugene Delguadio has got to be one of the most offensive things I’ve ever read:

“Radical homosexuals will terrorize daycare centers, hospitals, churches and private schools. Traditional moral values will be shattered by federal law. Same-sex marriages and adoptions. Wedding gown-clad men smooching before some left-wing clergyman or state official is just the beginning. You’ll see men hand-in-hand skipping down to adoption centers to “pick out” a little boy for themselves.”

Is it just me, or does this whole thing sound like it’s something straight out of the closeted, anti-gay fifties? This man has a horribly twisted view of what being gay really is, and he wants to force that view on the rest of us.

Gay Marriage Is like Having Two Bulls Together – You Get Bullshazzle

US Representative Don Young (R) visited a high school and made horribly insensitive remarks about suicide in the wake of a student who had taken his own life. He then went on to say this about gay marriage:

“”You can’t have marriage with two men,” Young said. “What do you get with two bulls?” The congressman said the relationship would result in “bullshazzle” or, as the newspaper described it, another “word resembling the more familiar obscenity.”

Class act, Congressman. Real class act.

Gays Are Terrorists, Radicals, and Extremists

that Robertson is back in our pages, calling gays all these things, and monstrous too:

“These people are terrorists, they’re radicals and they’re extremists. No Christian in his right mind would ever try to enforce somebody against their belief or else suffer jail. They did that during the Inquisition, it was horrible, it was a black mark on our history, but it isn’t being done now. There’s no Christian group I know of anywhere in the world that would force somebody to do something contrary to their deep-held religious beliefs or else face criminal penalties, but that’s what the homosexuals are trying to do here in America and I think it’s time pastors stand up and fight this monstrous thing. If the gays want to go out and do their gay sex, that’s one thing, but if they want you to force you to accept it and solemnify it by marriage then that’s a different matter and it’s an infringement on people’s religious belief.”

It’s amazing to watch the rhetoric go from “love the sinner hate the sin” to “these people are terrorists.” It’s clear what’s happening here. The anti-gay forces have realized that they’ve lost, and their voices are becoming more and more shrill in defeat. In the end, it won’t really matter. But in the meantime we all just have to suffer through the death throes of their movement.

Anti-Gay States Should Form Their Own Country and Call it Reagan

Douglas McKinnon, author of “The Secessionist States of America: The Blueprint for Creating a Traditional Values Country… Now” wants the anti gay states to get together and form their own new nation:

The leaders that we’re picking are deciding not to stand firmly for traditional values, not to stand for our rights, not to articulate the vision our Founding Fathers created over 24o years ago… the interim name for the country, by the way, is Reagan… the group decided that would be the best interim name until the voters eventually decided to pick the full-time name for the new republic based on traditional values.”

Seriously> I mean, seriously? And of course, it has to be named after their God, Ronald Reagan, a washed up actor with Alzheimers who has been whitewashed into the Saint of the Republican Party. Yeah, good luck with that.

Our Straight Marriage is Property, and the Gays Are Stealing It

That’s the unusual tact being taken by a straight couple who wants to intervene in the Kansas marriage equality case. Joe.My.God reports:

Phillip W. Unruh and Sandra L. Unruh today filed a motion to intervene in the ACLU’s marriage equality case in Kansas. As laid out in multiple points in their brief, the Unruhs declare that legalization of same-sex marriage would constitute the literal theft of their straight Christian marriage, a property which is guaranteed to belong only to them per the Fifth Amendment.

Joe takes down the whole argument better than I ever could: “Apparently, once them gays steal a chunk of their marriage, well – it’s all downhill for the Uhruhs from there. Next thing you know they’ll be cooking meth with hobos under a Kansas overpass. The rest of their brief is similarly cracktastic, complete with quotes from Genesis and the usual “they can’t even make a baby” crapola. Hit the link courtesy of Equality Case Files and dig out your favorite bits.”

Gay Massages Will Make the US Military Vulnerable to Terrorists

Rep. Louis Gohmert’s latest anti-gay rant:

“I’ve had people say, ‘Hey, you know, there’s nothing wrong with gays in the military. Look at the Greeks.’ Well, you know, they did have people come along who they loved that was the same sex and would give them massages before they went into battle. But you know what, it’s a different kind of fighting, it’s a different kind of war and if you’re sitting around getting massages all day ready to go into a big, planned battle, then you’re not going to last very long. It’s guerrilla fighting. You are going to be ultimately vulnerable to terrorism and if that’s what you start doing in the military like the Greeks did. As people have said, ‘Louie, you have got to understand, you don’t even know your history.’ Oh yes I do. I know exactly. It’s not a good idea.”

Of course, the central idea here is that gays are weak, and are going to infect the military with their weak ways, which is going to make the military week, which is going to make us vulnerable to terrorism. Sorry, represented Gohmert, but that’s a pile of homophobic crap.

Seriously? What Marriage Equality Opponents Are Saying

Monday, October 20th, 2014

Seriously? Here’s the the latest in our ongoing series of some of the crazy things the anti-gay marriage equality opponents are saying and doing around the world.

It’s a Secular Inquisition

Columnist Robert Tracinski’s hair is on fire over a case out of Idaho where a wedding chapel is being told they must cater to everyone:

So it’s official: a new religious orthodoxy is sweeping across the nation, imposed by government and backed by force. It’s a religious orthodoxy required by secular authorities for a secular purpose, but no matter. Heretics will be found out and forced to recant. No one ever expects the Secular Inquisition. Except that we actually did expect it. In fact, it’s inherent in the fundamental basis of the left’s arguments for gay marriage. I’m speaking here of the argument for gay marriage. It may be hard to remember now, but not very long ago there were compromise proposals for same-sex “civil unions” that were legally equivalent to marriage but under a different name. Gay rights activists consciously rejected these unions in order to specifically demand the use of the term “marriage,” insisting that the state legally recognize and enforce the equality of these marriages with old-fashioned, outmoded heterosexual ones.

First off, I’m inherently suspicious of these claims that the couple will go to jail – I’ve only seen these on conservative sites. Remember, too, that right now it’s the couple that’s suing the city, not the other way around.

I also want to set the record straight on something. Civil Unions were not offered by loving, well-meaning Christians and then rejected by gays. They were, in fact, the only way we could get our rights at all at one point in this country, and were bitterly fought for. These so-called “Christians” were on the front lines, fighting against them. They only started offering them as an alternative to marriage equality once it became apparent they were losing the fight, and then only as a way to forestall the inevitable. So let’s not rewrite history.

Gays and Gay Marriage Supporters Will be Judged by God

Maricopa County Republican Committee Chairman A.J. LaFaro says God will have the final word on marriage equality:

“The Republican Party, and its Platform, is very clear about being against same sex marriage. Individuals that believe and engage in same-sex marriage will ultimately be judged by God, not the U.S. Courts.”

So will the bigots.

Mandatory Gay Brain-Washing

The AFA, meanwhile, ran a news report on two “Christian” owned businesses facing difficulties for turning away same sex couples, under the headline:

“Two more Christian business owners face fines, mandatory gay brain-washing”

Let’s state this slowly and clearly so they will understand. No one, and I repeat no one is telling these business owners what they should think. They are free to be anti gay or pro traditional marriage in their minds, and in their speech, as loudly and as often as they desire. But when you open a FOR PROFIT business, you have to treat everyone equally. Everyone. If you want to provide these services out of the goodness of your Christian hearts, by all means, pick and choose your beneficiaries. But a public business must be open to all of the public.

They’re Performing a Political Genocide Against Christians

Mike Huckabee is jumping on the bandwagon in the Houston HERO case:

“The Houston case reminds us how rapidly our country is being taken over by intolerant despots who will unleash a form of political genocide against Christians who still cling to their Bibles and refuse to bow their knee to the false gods of hate and religious bigotry. The Houston mayor and her ilk, like mayors in Chicago and Boston who tried to prevent businesses opening in their city because the business owners were bible believing Christians, well she needs to apologize and start respecting all citizens – or at least have the integrity to resign. They shouldn’t expect taxpayers to fund hate-filled, gestapo-like tactics to openly attempt ot shut down the free exercise of religion and attempt to establish a religion of godless secularism. “

Once again, it is “Christians” who have brought this lawsuit. This is not a case of the city going after Pastors – instead, the city is defending itself against a lawsuit brought by “CHRISTIANS” to try to take away the rights of the city’s LGBT community. A little perspective here, please.

Seriously? Here’s the the latest in our ongoing series of some of the crazy things the anti-gay marriage equality opponents are saying and doing around the world.

My Argument Against Gay Marriage Totally Works Against Inter-Racial Marriage Too

John Aravosis at AmericaBlog has a great column today in which he shows how the arguments against marriage equality would have equally applied against interracial marriages. Here, he takes Arizona Governor Jan Brewer’s argument and changes a couple key words:

“In 1924, Virginia voters, through their duly-elected legislators, approved legislation to define marriage as a union of one white man and one white woman. Now, with their rulings, the federal courts have again thwarted the will of the people and further eroded the authority of states to regulate and uphold our laws. and so I think about here.”

It’s as we’ve been saying all along – substitute “African American” for gay, and would any of this be ok?

They’re About to Haul Pastors Off to Jail

Ted Cruz is all over this Houston pastors and subpoenas thing:

Christian Broadcasting Network’s (CBN) David Brody… asked whether we’ll “soon go through a period where pastors are hauled off to jail for a hate crime because they are speaking for traditional marriage,” Cruz responded by saying, “I think that is a real risk and you and I have both pointed to that risk in the past.”

Nobody’s going to jail for speaking out against marriage equality. In fact, no one’s going to jail for anything here. Check out Zack Ford’s amazing take-down of this whole right-wing freakout over the Houston subpoenas.

We Grieve for the Children

Cathi Herrod, head of the Center For Arizona Policy, is “grieving” for kids in Arizona who are now condemned to have gay parents:

“I am heartbroken for a country and a state that has had the redefinition of marriage forced upon them by an out of control federal judiciary. In what amounts to the de-facto Roe v Wade of marriage, voters throughout the nation have watched their voices be silenced, and their votes voided. Now, Arizona’s marriage amendment and our voters are the latest victims. While the United States Supreme Court may still take up the issue of marriage redefinition, for now the courts have settled the issue in our state. Today, we grieve. We grieve for the children who now have no chance of growing up with a mom and a dad. We mourn the loss of a culture and its ethical foundation. We mourn a culture that continues to turn its back on timeless principles. But we do not despair. We do not throw in the towel. We do not give up. Just as we have worked to build a culture of life, we will focus on rebuilding a culture of marriage as the union of one man and one woman.”

What, did this group have some kind of secret plan to steal kids from gay families and put them into straight ones? Because short of kidnapping, whether or not marriage equality is legal in the state, same sex parents are raising kids. Marriage equality does not change this in any way. It only provides a legal framework and safety net to help protect these kids, just as marriage protects the kids in straight relationships.

Seriously? Here’s the the latest in our ongoing series of some of the crazy things the anti-gay marriage equality opponents are saying and doing around the world.

Turning Away the Gays Is Nothing Like Turning Away the Blacks

One News Now argues that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with gays being turned away from Christian businesses:

Based in Washington, D.C., FRC’s legal expert says the LBGTQ community’s campaign to trample religious freedom — by making their demand for special privileges into a civil rights issue — has been in place for some time. He asserts that a homosexual couple having to travel across town to find a comparable service is much less of an inconvenience than losing one’s livelihood and having to find a new career. “The homosexual activists will say, ‘Oh you want to take us back to the way it was in the Jim Crow South,'” Sprigg argues. “We’re not in any way saying anything like that. The cost to the same-sex people is they go to the next business down the street.

Except when you live in a small town, and there is no other “business down the street”. Seriously, would we really say to African American couples – the cost of you being black is that you have to expect you will be turned away from some businesses. You should just go to the next business down the street? Seriously?

Homosexuality Is a Sin And A Abomination

Hate Car in Idaho

That’s one of the lovely messages scrawled on a car in Idaho by a family that supposed to marriage equality:

The family has stamped statements that read “God isn’t dead,” “Just say no to same-sex marriage,” and “Homosexuality is a sin” among other things on their car windows. “This is kind our little way of protesting the homosexual extremist movement,” Justin said. The family says they are now being ridiculed for their beliefs, even though they have a right to freedom of expression. “We’ve had a few homosexual extremists who cuss us out and get very angry with us and threaten us,” Justin said. But the Sease family says they’re standing up for what is right, and are speaking out for others who are afraid to do the same. “If nobody else is going to do it, why not start doing it,” Melanie said. “Hopefully, other people will join us and follow us and do what we’re doing.”

it’s amazing how some people seem to enjoy putting their ignorance on display.

There’s No Ebola Vaccine Because of Fat Lesbians

That’s the contention of right-wing commentator Erick Erickson:

In a post titled “Fat Lesbians Got All The Ebola Dollars But Blame the GOP,” Erickson insists that it was the federal government’s choice to fritter away taxpayer money on useless studies. Chief among them: a project “studying the propensity of lesbans to be fat.”

This is, of course. absolute idiocy. The reason we don’t have a vaccine is that our health care system is profit-driven, and there’s no profit in it. But the truth never gets in the way of a good gay bashing for the right wing.

God Will Get Us With Ebola or Worse for Liking the Gays

Pastor Ron Baity picks up the theme:

“In’it amazing for a 150+ years we’ve had the laws and many of the same laws on the book and all of a sudden we’re supposed to have had a vision overnight at how dumb we were all of those years and now the things that even put laws in place that said homosexuality is breaking the law is now putting so called laws in place saying that it’s ok, that it’s a lifestyle that’s acceptable in our society… we are bringing the judgment of God on this nation as sure as Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed. Don’t be surprised at the plagues. Don’t be surprised at the judgment of God. You think Ebola us bad now? Just wait. If it’s not that, it’s gonna be something else.”

Aside from the rampantly poor grammar, the open bigotry and hatred for gays expressed in this man’s speech is chilling. Twenty years ago, it was AIDS that was God’s judgement for being gay. What will it be in 2034?

The Rainbow Flag is the Mark of the Beast

That’s what Bryan Fischer says, talking about a T-Shirt printer who refused to print a Pride shirt:

“The Mark of the Beast today is the rainbow flag. You think about the number of examples, and I just ticked through a list of examples here, of people who were unable, who were not allowed to engage in commerce because they would not take the mark of the Beast on their hands or on their foreheads. They would not allow the Beast to dictate to them what they did with regard to the homosexual agenda, what they did or what they thought.

A couple things here. First off, no one is telling these people what to think. That has never been suggested. In fact, our side has been quite clear that you are free to thing (and believe) whatever you want. Clearly – just read these pages to see the proof. But I was unaware that the bible had a passage proclaiming the rights of people to conduct commerce. In fact, I kinda remember a passage where Jesus didn’t treat kindly the merchants engaged in commerce. We need to separate religion in this country, which is often a beautiful, noble thing, from for profit businesses. Yes, you can be a Christian and run a for-profit business. But the rules of the state apply, not the rules of the church. And the rules of the state now say quite clearly – you need to treat everyone equally. If you just want to print Christian T-Shirts, do it as a hobby. But once you start trying to male a profit, you have to open the doors to everyone. Gays, lesbians, Buddhists Muslims, men, women, African Americans, Mexican Americans, young, old, married, single – everyone.

Christ Still Rules Our Democracy, Despite What Judge Says

Yeah, that’s the confusing message from Jim Minnery, head of Alaska Family Action, in response to marriage equality coming to the state via a judicial ruling:

“Apparently, [Judge] Burgess agrees with one of the lawyers for the plaintiffs suing the State who said that marriage is a “changing institution.” Changing exactly into what is the most frightening aspect of this ruling. Under what logical rationale would the Courts now deny other “evolving” forms of marriage ? Three wives for one husband ? Marrying your aunt or niece or brother ? Group marriage involving any number of couples and individuals with various sexual orientations ? Once you eliminate sexual complementarity from the marriage equation, is there any reason to keep other cornerstones we’ve all taken for granted for generations including exclusivity, permanence and monogamy? There can be no doubt that this was a subversion of the democratic process. Who is the true owner of our state constitution ? Is it the people of Alaska or unelected men and women who happen to wear black robes? If it’s the latter, then the idea that we live in a representative democracy is nothing more than wishful thinking. Despite our disappointment with the Burgess ruling, Christ is still on the throne.”

Um, you at least kind of had a coherent point, however misguided, in that you think judges shouldn’t be able to overturn the rule of the people. But then you had to go and blow it with the whole Jesus on the Throne thing. This is still a democracy where the people decide – via a vote or via the legislature or via judges who are able to put a check on decisions that violate the Constitution. The big one, you know, for all the states? And that Constitution also contains a separation of Church and State. I know you hate that, but it’s there. So unless and until that is changed, Jesus doesn’t have a vote. Nor does Mohammed, or Buda, for that matter.

Tony Perkins thinks the whole marriage equality thing is a bomb that’s about to go off:

“[The decision] lit a fuse to a powder keg culturally that is going to have ramifications for years to come in this nation… This issue is not going away, despite what the court may say.”

Polls seem to suggest otherwise, although we are awaiting the next several national polls to see if a supposed dip in support reported by one poll is real, or an outlier.

I’m Scared the Gays Will Pie Me

Christian conservative and Colorado House candidate Gordon Klingenschmitt is afraid to meet with the gays:

“Sadly, I’ve received threats from people who hate religious freedom, and I wonder if the following video is representative of the behavior of some people with whom you are inviting me to meet?” Klingenschmitt attached a video of anti-gay rights activist Anita Bryant getting a pie thrown in her face during a live 1977 television interview. Bryant cried as the pie ran down her face. Later, as one of the men who threw the pie spoke to a news crew, Bryant’s husband at the time, Bob Green, pied him in the face with a pie one of the activists was carrying. “If such a meeting is ever arranged,” Klingenschmitt wrote, “I would require advance notice of the names, addresses, and sufficient information for a background check on each attendee, which if provided at your expense could certainly ease our concerns and hasten our ability to meet in person to discuss any potential future collaboration together as fellow citizens of the Great State of Colorado.”

We don’t condone pieing. Not that Mr. Klingenschmitt doesn’t deserve it, after the long list of hateful things he’s said over the years about the LGBT community.

Gays Will Keep Christians Out of College

That’s one of the absurd assertions made by Laura Ingraham:

“I think [Huckabee’s] just saying what a lot of people believe and you can say that’s not right or that’s not fair, but they have every right to believe what they believe too…now people are saying ‘Laura, how long before my faith becomes a hate crime?’ That’s a great question and I think Huckabee he’s raised this before. If you’re a Bible-believing Christian and you’re in the military, can you expect to get a promotion? If you’re a Bible-believing Christian and have gotten up and spoken spoken about traditional marriage in a high school debate, will that be used against you in getting into a college?”

There’s no “gay friendly” litmus test for college admission, nor should there be. It should be noted that, forty plus years after the civil rights revolution, you can still go to college if you are a racist. That doesn’t mean people will like you there once you get in.

Let’s Restrict the Percentage of Gay Characters on TV

Responding to the somewhat questionable numbers on the LGBT population in the UK (about 1.9%), the “Christian Institute” says gays are overrepresented on TV and now in marriage laws:

“These figures show that the amount of political time and energy spent on the many demands of gay campaigners is out of all proportion to their numbers. The votes on marriage are the ultimate illustration. Parliament redefined an age-old institution and offended millions for the sake of a tiny number of people – many of whom didn’t even want it. It’s the same with the media. The number of homosexuals portrayed on TV is massively out of proportion to their numbers in the real world. I’m sure other equally small minority groups wish they could exert as much influence.”

Is the group really suggesting we count the members of a minority group before we give them equal rights? What’s the threshold, then? Do you deserve rights if you make up 5% of the population? 10%? Should you be treated equally only of 20% of the population is like you? Tell me, what exactly is the percentage at which a minority group deserves equal rights?

Gay Marriage is a Betrayal of the Constitution

That’s the latest line from Mike Huckabee:

The bigger issue is with the betrayal of our constitution and the surrender to a small group… Grow a spine, show a modicum of knowledge about the way we govern ourselves, and lead, follow, or get the heck out of the way.”

Funny, it seems to me that marriage equality and its recent victories show that the US constitution is a wonderful, living document that can change and evolve with the times. But I guess some folks are just stuck in the bigoted past.

Seriously? Here’s the the latest in our ongoing series of some of the crazy things the anti-gay marriage equality opponents are saying and doing around the world.

Keeping Gays From Marrying Stops Out of Wedlock Births

That strange assertion is part of Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott’s new brief in the marriage equality case there:

“Texas’s marriage laws are rationally related to the State’s interest in reducing unplanned out-of-wedlock births. By channeling procreative heterosexual intercourse into marriage, Texas’s marriage laws reduce unplanned out-of-wedlock births and the costs that those births impose on society. Recognizing same-sex marriage does not advance this interest because same-sex unions do not result in pregnancy.”

Hmmm… anyone else notice a chink in the logic there? By the same token, recognizing same sex marriage would not impede this interest – in other words, the two things have absolutely nothing to do with each other. It’s like saying “white is the best color to paint a house. It reflects sunlight, and leads to more energy efficiency. You don’t like white, so you’re not advancing this interest, No house for you.”

Gay Marriage is Sin, Darkness, Evil and Deception

You can always count on wingnut Linda Harvey for a good anti-gay quote:

“[W]e must not serve the interests of sin and darkness… this court’s inaction is an act motivated by evil and deception and ultimately will not stand. This is attempted theft of what God has ordained and our Lord will not honor this lawlessness. Allowing homosexuality to become normal in America may certainly be part of God’s judgment on our once-Christian nation for our irresponsible sexual practices and for turning our back on what the Lord has taught us. Even so, God will at some point allow the consequences of such defiance to play itself out and that will be a very tragic day indeed for those who have thumbed their noses at the Lord as they celebrate sin.”

So how do you really feel?

Don’t Let Your Gay Uncle Near Your Kids

That’s the message US Cardinal Raymond Burke is sending to families:

Burke was asked by the website LifeSiteNews, “How should Catholic parents deal with a difficult situation like this? When planning a Christmas family gathering with grandchildren present, parents are asked by their son, who is in a homosexual relationship, if he can come and bring home with him his homosexual partner.”

“This is a very delicate question, made more delicate by the aggressiveness of the homosexual agenda. If homosexual relationships are intrinsically disordered, which indeed they are … then what would it mean to grandchildren to have present at a family gathering a family member who is living [in] a disordered relationship with another person? If it were another kind of relationship – something that was profoundly disordered and harmful – we wouldn’t expose our children to that relationship, to the direct experience of it. And neither should we do it in the context of a family member who not only suffers from same-sex attraction, but who has chosen to live out that attraction, to act upon it, committing acts which are always and everywhere wrong, evil. Families have to find a way … to try to draw the person away from a relationship which is disordered.”

What Cardinal Burke and other bigots like him are really afraid of is that children will grow up in a world where being gay is normal, because it is, and will no longer follow them or their anti-gay teachings.

It’s Time for Massive Civil Disobedience

Pat Buchanan wants to see “Christians” in the streets against marriage equality:

“Do the states have the right to outlaw same-sex marriage? Not long ago the question would have been seen as absurd. For every state regarded homosexual acts as crimes. But today rogue judges and justices, appointed for life, answer to no one, instruct a once-democratic republic on what laws we may and may not enact… Why was there not massive civil disobedience against this anti-Christian discrimination, as there was against segregation? Why did Congress, which has the power to abolish every federal district and appellate court and to restrict the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court, not act?”

Seriously, he expects Congress, THIS Congress, to do something? And good luck with the whole civil disobedience thing. Your sides’ rallies over the last couple years have been on life support.

We’re Never, Never, Never Gonna Be Together With the Gays

Cardinal Francesco Coccopalmerio says the Catjolic Church has no plans to consider blessing same sex unions:

We have to be honest. For us, and not just for us but for human culture in general, marriage is between a man and a woman. To bless this type of union… to say that they are like [heterosexual] marriages, never. This is simply for reasons of logic and identity. To bless them is not part of the way we see Christian doctrine.

Maybe not for Catholics, at least not yet. But many other Christian faiths already do bless same sex unions. Maybe once this generation of the hidebound Catholic hierarchy moves on…

“Christian” Companies Should Be Allowed to Turn Away Anyone

That’s the gist of Tony Perkins’ reaction to the T-Shirt shop that was fined for turning away a gay-themed printing job:

“Just because a company sells to the public doesn’t mean it has to surrender its private views. Even for a t-shirt company, there’s no one-size-fits all approach to managing a business. Like any shop, Hands On has the freedom to establish its own criteria of conduct and conscience. Blaine Adamson, the devout believer who runs Hands On Originals, was stunned. After all, there was no malice in the family’s decision — who politely declined to print t-shirts with a rainbow message that contradicted their faith.”

So if a “Christian” business owner thinks African Americans are ungodly, does he have a right to reject their business too?

Legislative efforts to amend our Constitution to protect marriage are already underway. In the House, this initiative is being led by Representative Tim Huelskamp of Kansas. In the Senate, it is being spearheaded by Senator Ted Cruz of Texas. Marriage Supporter, I’ll say it plainly: marriage is on the ropes, and our principles of government are taking a beating as well. That’s why I need you to ACT NOW and DEMAND action from Congress to put a halt to the legal chaos that has been thrust upon us by the radical same-sex ‘marriage’ movement.”

Hmmm… thousands lining up around the country to join the sacred institution? Looks like marriage s alive and well to me. It’s bigotry that’s on the ropes.

The Mighty Hand of God Will Smite Us for Gay Marriage

That’s the gist of the warning from the West Virginia Family Foundation:

“Our heavenly Father didn’t take homosexuality lightly in the Bible’s account of Sodom & Gomorrh, nor did He give the Isralites a pass when they choose pagan ways over His Commandments. America should brace herself as we see the mighty hand of God give us our just due. (Jud 1:7-10 & Rom 1:21-32). Christians’ civil rights will be trounced by this new marriage law. Civil law on marriage will have to be rewritten. This will be a field day for WV’s trial lawyers against Christian business owners, landlords and eventually churches. Thanks Governor Tomblin for siding with immorality and deviancy. Children will probably suffer the greatest loss as they are adopted into the new homosexual social experiment of same sex parenting. This is premeditated child abuse, sanctioned by Governor Tomblin and every democrat legislator that denied voters a stronger marriage amendment.”

They can gnash their teeth and scream bloody murder, but it’s all but over.

Seriously? What Marriage Equality Opponents Are Saying

Thursday, October 9th, 2014

Seriously? Here’s the the latest in our ongoing series of some of the crazy things the anti-gay marriage equality opponents are saying and doing around the world.

Let’s Make The Gays Call Their Unions “Pairages”

A Utah lawmaker has a new idea – if we can’t ban gays from getting married, let’s force them to call their marriages something else to distinguish them from the real thing:

State Representative Kraig Powell, a Republican opponent of same-sex marriage, opened a bill file in the Utah legislature to revise marriage statutes. He suggested rewriting the law to refer to same-sex marriages as “pairages”… Mr. Powell said the legislature might need to change its laws to reflect what he called the innate differences between a straight couple who are both the biological parents of a child and a same-sex couples who are not. And he said that even the heading that groups the state marriage laws — “Husband and Wife” — would now need rethinking. “It’s going to start from the very title page,” Mr. Powell said. “If anyone thinks that’s just a technical process, changing wording here and there, they’re mistaken.” He added: “The differences between a same-sex relationship and an opposite-sex relationship are large enough that maybe we ought to recognize the difference between them.”

OK, this is one of the most blatantly stupid stories I’ve seen in a long time. And I’ve seen stupid. Pairages? Seriously? It’s also an example of sour grapes at its finest.

Let’s Call the Supremes The “C” Word

Linda Harvey is ever so pissed about the Supreme Court’s non-decision:

“The liberal majority in the 2014 Roberts court will now be labeled with the ‘C’ word–for being cowards. These justices upended American civilization while standing on the sidelines. Millions of voters in five states were assaulted in the public square, disenfranchised by this court’s decision to not overturn erroneous lower court rulings validating same sex ‘marriage.’ Like Saul during the stoning of Stephen, they became bystanders, nodding their assent as terrible violence was committed. The ‘gay’ bullies got their way. Truth and morality were trampled but the black-robed bystanders will plead innocence. But let’s not just pick on certain lawyers because they do operate with some powerful constraints at times. What’s needed and totally possible is a firm stand by the GOP, no longer adopting the loaded lingo of the left, like denying being ‘anti-gay,’ which makes me want to scream.”

Seriously? “The bullies got their way?” This woman who every week denigrates LGBT people on her show in her sneering voice, thinks that because gays can marry, the “bullies” got their way? It’s beyond belief.

I Would Defend a Ban on Interracial Marriage

In what should be a career killer, a GOP AG just said something you seriously won’t believe – that he would have defended a law banning interracial marriage:

“It might be distasteful to me …but I’ve got to stay consistent with that — as the state’s lawyer, it’s not my job to pick and choose… Love and the law are colorblind, as they should be. Many shameful, racist laws were changed over the course of time in this country by legislators, the courts and the people’s direct votes. But if Susan Happ wants to make up new laws, or change old ones, she’s running for the wrong job.”

I’ve always asked, in this space, how some of these inane statements would sound if you replaced “gay” with “African American”. Now we know. They sound just as stupid. But the sad thing is that some of these folks still believe them.

Gay Marriage Loving Liberals Never Listen to Conservatves

OK, this one’s pretty rich – Tony Perkins is accusing Judges on the Ninth Circuit of being liberals who shut down debate:

“Led by activist in chief, Stephen Reinhardt, the three-judge panel scrapped the marriage laws of two more states just 24 hours after the Supreme Court left voters vulnerable to the benches’ attacks. Reinhardt is one of the most overturned judges in U.S. history, whose portfolio includes striking down the Pledge of Allegiance because it ‘indoctrinates our nation’s children with a state-held religious belief.’ Yesterday’s opinion, however, is one of the most vicious yet. Reinhardt rips into the majority of Americans who believe children deserve (and need) a mom and a dad. ‘This proposition,’ (which incidentally, is rooted in years of social science data), ‘reflects a crass and callous view of parental love and the parental bond,’ Reinhardt rants, ‘that is not worthy of response.’ How typically liberal. Instead of encouraging debate, he shuts it down. Like most on the Left, he wants to attack the majority who hold these views and silence them because he knows the facts aren’t on his side.”

When was the last time Perkins actually listened to a thing the other side was saying about marriage equality? And isn’t a courtroom, where both sides have the opportunity to present any facts that support their case, exactly the place that encourages debate? Just because you don’t have any facts on your side doesn’t mean the judge is biased. It means you have no case, and it’s been proven again and again and again. All that’s left is the rhetoric.

The GOP’s Not Anti-Gay Enough for Me

Yup, you read that right. Mike Huckabee is thinking of leaving the GOP because they aren’t hating on the gays enough:

“I am utterly exasperated with Republicans and the so-called leadership of the Republicans who have abdicated on this issue… [they will] lose guys like me and a whole bunch of still God-fearing, Bible-believing people. I’m gone. I’ll become an independent. I’ll start finding people that have guts to stand. I’m tired of this.”

Maybe if some of the more virulent anti-gay voices leave the GOP, the party will finally be able to take on a more welcoming and open-minded tone on LGBT issues.

You’re Committing Biological Fraud

Nick and Jessica Elliott Fulgham, a couple who recently married in Mississippi were targeted for attacks from right-wing activists because the husband is a transgender man:

The AFA accused the Fulghams of “biological fraud,” stating on its website, “Two lesbians getting married could not possibly be more illegal and unconstitutional anywhere in the United States than in Mississippi.” The AFA has been designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center since 2010.

We should note that Nick legally changed his gender, so there is no fraud. But as we’ve noticed many times before, these folks never let the facts get in the way of a good anti-LGBT lynching in the media.

Letting Gay Couples Marry Will Give Straight Couples STD’s

Mat Staver was asked what harm same sex marriage could do to married straight couples:

“There’s harm to the individual. We know for example that like male-male sexual relationships are notoriously harmful physically as well as mentally, and also female-female, same kinds of things. And that’s not something that I’ve created. You can go to the Center for Disease Control and find that out. So it’s harmful to the individuals, those harms often affect those around because they’re communicable and other kinds of very serious and deadly diseases.”

Even if you accept his flawed premise that gays and lesbians are full of STD’s, one has to wonder how the upstanding faithful Christian couples are going to contract them from the gays and lesbians. Doesn’t the term Sexually Transmitted Disease say it all?

Homosexuals Are destroying Human Identity

A Latvian Archbishop says gays are up to their destructive habits again:

“Homosexual relationships are destroying our identity. Not only our Christian identity, but also our human identity, the identity of man and the identity of woman. We are not against homosexuals, we are for these persons. We are invited to disarm a lie and let in the truth in such ways.

Oh boy, yet another thing we are accused of destroying. Add it to the list – New Orleans, the World Series, everything that is light and bright and good…
