Washington, USA: Lawsuit Filed Against Anti Marriage Equality Florist

Wednesday, April 10th, 2013

Attorney General Bob FergusonA florist who refused to provide flowers for a gay couples’ wedding is being sued by the state Attorney General Bob Ferguson, LGBTQ Nation reports:

The complaint was filed in Benton County, Wash., on Tuesday against Barronelle Stutzman, owner of Arlene’s Flowers and Gifts in Richland. The lawsuit is in response to a March 1 incident where she refused service to longtime customer Robert Ingersoll. Attorney General Bob Ferguson had sent a letter on March 28 asking Stutzman to comply with the state’s anti-discrimination law, but said Stutzman’s attorneys responded Monday saying she would challenge any effort by the state to enforce the law.

In related news, an guest book cover designer is refusing to work with a lesbian couple because of her Christian beliefs. Queerty reports:

Jami Howard was searching for guest book covers for her own same-sex nuptials when she happened upon Paledesigns, which featured Mickey ears and balloons on happy couples. What started as cordial back and forth with the owner, identified on the shop page as Jessica Fong, went awry when Howard revealed that she had a same-sex partner… “After talking with my pastor and praying about the situation, I decided that I shouldn’t design your guestbook for you. Please know that I did take this into much thought though. Because I am a Christian and I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, I feel that designing a customized guestbook for you two will be against my belief and will mean that who I am and my business supports gay marriages.”

I always feel a little conflicted about these stories, and a little sympathetic toward the owners. But I’ve found a useful trick – substitute the word “black” or “mexican” (or any other ethnicity of your choosing) for the word gay. Then see how these statements sound.

Scottish Catholic Priests Reading Anti Marriage Equality Letter in Churches TodayThe Roman Catholic Church has declared August 26 as National Marriage Sunday and is calling on politicians to “sustain rather than subvert marriage”.

The letter, which will be read in all of Scotland’s 500 Catholic parishes, will urge followers to continue to act against efforts to “redefine” marriage.

The Scottish Government has said it is right to introduce same-sex marriages, but has stressed no clergy would be forced to carry them out.
