Slovakia Anti Gay Activists Push to Ban Marriage Equality

Monday, July 21st, 2014

Slovakia - Google MapsThere’s a movement afoot in Slovakia to ban gay marriage via a referendum.

Joe.My.God reports:

The constitutional definition of marriage, which some gay-right-advocates openly called a ban on same-sex marriages, does not go far enough, some conservative activists say, as they gather signatures to force a referendum that would make the laws even stronger. Behind the referendum initiative is the Alliance for Family (AZR), which declares itself a non-partisan and non-religious organisation and which emerged during the preparations for the September 2013 March for Life as an alliance of dozens of pro-family organisations. It has collected over 300,000 signatures under its petition, which needs to be signed by 350,000 citizens in order to be binding for the president to hold a referendum. The AZR hopes to achieve this aim by the end of this summer, the Sme daily reported. The referendum could possibly be held together with the November 15 municipal elections.

Does it surprise you to know that a group of Catholic Bishops are backing the petition?

Slovakia Marriage Equality Ban Added to Constitution

Thursday, June 5th, 2014

Slovakia Prime Minister Robert FicoA big step backward for LGBT rights in Slovakia this week.

Gay Star News reports:

Slovakia has moved to ban same-sex marriage in its constitution with 102 out of 150 lawmakers voting in favor of the ban. A two-thirds majority of lawmakers was needed so if only three less lawmakers had opposed the measure it would not have passed. Only 18 lawmakers voted against the ban, which was primarily supported by the opposition Christian Democrats and the ruling Smer-Social Democracy party of Prime Minister Robert Fico. Political observers say the move is a populist bid by Fico to broaden his appeal after he failed to win the country’s presidency in March.

It’s a classic move – climb to power over the backs of your LGBT citizens. That doesn’t make it any less disgusting.

Slovakia: Parliament Rejects Civil Partnerships

Tuesday, November 6th, 2012

The Slovakian Parliament today rejected a civil partnerships bill after hearing strong opposition from the Catholic Church.

During two days of heated debate, conservatives accused the opposition of blasphemy, and said granting same-sex relationships equivalent legal status as heterosexual marriage was against traditional family values and a risk for society. Only 14 of 129 deputies present voted to send the bill to a second reading, 94 were against and 20 abstained.

“The purpose of the official recognition of same-sex partnerships’ legitimacy is the fulfilment of these people’s love and responsible relationships,” said opposition Freedom and Solidarity party member Martin Poliacik, co-author of the bill, in his opening speech to parliament last week.

Slovakia Caves to Religious Pressure on Definition of Marriage

Friday, March 18th, 2011

The parliamentary Labour, Family and Social Affairs Committee agreed on Thursday to define marriage as a union of a man and a woman, thus backing the decision of the government to give up in face of fierce opposition from conservative groups its original family law bill proposal that introduced the possibility of gay marriage.

Slovakia: Skinhead Attack Cancels First Gay Pride March

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Slovakia’s first ever gay pride parade was canceled today after skinheads attacked the participants with rocks, eggs and a tear gas grenade. Organizers are blaming police for not providing adequate protection. Eight neo-Nazis were arrested and there were no serious injuries.

Members of the neo-Nazi group Slovenska Pospolitost attacked the participants at a pre-parade rally for LGBT rights. A tear gas canister thrown by one of the approximately 80 neo-Nazis interrupted the rally, attended by 500 people, while the extremists also were throwing eggs at the participants, the Sme daily reported.

Two rally participants who were carrying a rainbow flag, the symbol of the parade, were attacked by the neo-Nazis at Hviezdoslav Square in Bratislava. They attacked the flag barriers with their fists in the face, the SITA newswire reported. The rally and parade had been announced long in advance and observers said that the police had enough time to prepare for the security and safety of the parade participants.
