Meet Transgender Soldier Jacob Eleazer

Thursday, March 20th, 2014

Jacob EleazerJacob Eleazer, a 28-year-old TAC (Teach, Assess, Council) officer, learned he was up for promotion this December. For seven years, he’d been an exemplary soldier, rising to the rank of first lieutenant, and now on his way to captain. But there was a problem. Within the confines of his military training center, in western Kentucky, Eleazer still went by his birth name, which was female.

Outside his Army base, Eleazer lived as a man, one of 15,450 military personnel who consider themselves transgender, according to a recently released study, but don’t dare come out to their fellow soldiers and risk jeopardizing their careers. “My colleagues just assumed I was a really butch lesbian,” says Eleazer, who has broad shoulders, close-cropped hair and a jutting chin.

Like Chelsea Manning, the former Army private who gave classified documents to WikiLeaks when she was known as Bradley Manning, Eleazer hadn’t identified with his gender since puberty. Yet he believed that undergoing any kind of anatomical change was unrealistic–too many complications–and so for years he lived as a lesbian. But in 2011 he decided he couldn’t abide the dissonance any longer. He soon came out to his friends and family, who were supportive, and for the last two years, he has lived as Jacob. But he only recently resolved to surgically modify his gender.

Awesome New Marriage Equality Commercial From Empowered Products

Saturday, February 15th, 2014

Empowered Products AdIt’s not often we get excited about a TV ad, but this one caught our eye.

LGBT Weekly reports:

Empowered Products, Inc., an emerging leader in the high-growth sexual wellness sector through its award-winning PINK(R) and Gun Oil(R) brands, has aired its first-ever television commercial. The 60-second spot aired on the Bravo and E! networks in seven major U.S. markets. Empowered Products stated that it believes its commercial is the first by a major U.S. manufacturer or publicly-traded company to utilize an authentic portrayal of marriage equality and service by gays in the U.S. military. The commercial tells the story of a husband wistfully going through the motions of daily life in the family home awaiting the return of his partner and the joy of his homecoming from service.

I got a lump in my throat at the end. It’s truly amazing how far we have come in just the last four years.

OhioRemember the GOP debate where a gay US soldier stood up and asked the candidates if they would reinstate the ban on gay troops if elected, and was booed by the right-wing audience? Well, he’s jumping onboard the marriage equality effort in Ohio, the Huffington Post reports:

Leaders of pro-gay-marriage group FreedomOhio said Friday that Columbus resident Stephen Snyder-Hill will help lead outreach efforts… FreedomOhio wants to overturn the 2004 state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. Supporters started collecting signatures last year to place their own constitutional amendment on the ballot by 2014.

The repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell has freed up our proud military sisters and brothers to continue the fight for full equality inside and outside the military.

Iowa, USA: Marriage Ceremony Between Soldier and Partner

Monday, June 18th, 2012

Nothing flashy here, just, as Good As You notes:

“It’s just an army man, Paul, and his love, David, in a non-church setting, entering into a *civil* marriage contract in the state of Iowa. This is what we equal rights activists are fighting to achieve in all states and federally, even as our opposition continues to throw religious asides our way.”

Friday, June 1st, 2012

This may have been my favorite thing all week. The story and the proposal are real, but the video is being promoted by CRUSH, which is an anti-smoking program for the GLBT community. It’s just adorable.

CA, USA: Soldier’s Partner Proposes to Him on Base

Friday, April 27th, 2012

That remarkable British ad for marriage equality in which a returning soldier arrives to a boyfriend who proposes marriage on the runway just happened for real in San Diego:

Luggage in tow, Guerrero emerged with a smile on his face. Upon seeing Huston, Guerrero dropped his bags; aimed a kiss toward Huston’s lips; and opened his arms to his boyfriend’s waiting embrace. The time and distance of 10 months’ separation evaporated in a public show of affection that less than a year ago would have been cause for court martial.

After a few minutes of emotional holding and kissing, Huston went anxiously down on one knee; looked up at Guerrero, who was dressed from head to toe in military fatigues; and produced an engagement ring and the time-honored phrase, “Will you marry me?”
