President Obama Speaks at LGBT Fundraiser in New York City

Wednesday, June 18th, 2014

President Barack ObamaPresident Obama spoke last night at an LGBT fundraiser in NYC, just days after promising an executive order on LGBT employment.

Towleroad.com reports:

President Obama spoke at a Democratic LGBT fundraiser last night at Gotham Hall to a rousing crowd, ticking off a list of the many items he has accomplished for the LGBT community, making note of the advance of marriage equality, the Harvey Milk stamp, the drafting of Michael Sam, and the recent HBO production of The Normal Heart, noting that the work against AIDS is not done. Finally, he noted his plans, reported this week, to sign an executive order protecting LGBT employees of federal contractors.

Where would we be at this point federally if we had President McCain and a conservatively-packed US Supreme Court? The fight’s not over, but we’ve come a long way in six years.

USA, Utah: 12-Year-Old Boy Speaks Out For Marriage Equality

Sunday, January 12th, 2014

12 Year Old Speaks for Marriage EqualityAt a Utah Capitol rally for marriage equality, a 12-year-old boy stood up and spoke out for marriage equality.

Towleroad.com reports:

Yesterday there was a marriage equality rally at Utah’s capitol in Salt Lake City attended by 1,800 people. A petition containing 58,000 pro-equality signatures was delivered to Governor Herbert’s office. But the highlight of the rally may have been Riley Hackford-Peer, a 12-year-old whose moms were able to marry in the window before the Supreme Court put a stay on a lower court ruling striking down the state’s ban on same-sex marriage.

Kids like these are why attitudes towards gays and lesbians, and towards marriage equality in this country are quickly changing.

USA, Oregon: Teen Uses Bar Mitzvah Speech to Call for Marriage Equality

Sunday, December 1st, 2013

Duncan McAlpine SennettA little happy for your Sunday morning – watch as a teenager speaks out for marriage equality at his Bar Mitzvah.

The Advocate reports:

The case for marriage equality is so important to 13-year-old Duncan McAlpine Sennett that he used his Bar Mitzvah to deliver a persuasive argument to his guests. It’s been such a success that more than 20,000 people have already watched his five-minute talk at the Congregation Beth Israel in Portland, Oregon. Voters there will soon consider whether to make same-sex marriage legal.

I think it’s amazing to see kids like this speaking out for us – Duncan links the Torah to support for marriage equality. And he’s cute as a button. Made me a little misty eyed watching it.

Ohio, USA: Senator Portman Gives Speech to Constituents for First Time Since Supporting Marriage Equality

Sunday, March 24th, 2013

Ohio Senator Rob PortmanFor the first time since his stance to support marriage equality, Ohio Governor Rob Portman spoke in front of a group of GOP constituents. 10TV reports:

Portman was the featured speaker Saturday at the Butler County GOP’s Lincoln Day dinner. The Republican-dominated county north of Cincinnati is home to House Speaker John Boehner, who repeated his opposition to same-sex marriage after Portman’s reversal on the issue… He tells The Cincinnati Enquirer that Saturday’s crowd was split on their views of same-sex marriage but everyone was “very respectful.”

Pink News adds:

He was greeted with a standing ovation when he took to the stage, and rather than addressing the equal marriage controversy, he spoke of the Republican Party as a whole, which he said needed to “change direction”.

I know there has been some controversy on the left over this. Some folks have said we shouldn’t reward someone who took so long to come over to our way of thinking. For others, there’s no way to forgive the original sin of sponsoring and then voting for DOMA. And still others see this as purely a political stunt.

But I believe we need to accept such changes of heart at face value, and with open arms. The hard core of our remaining opposition is the tea party and the far-right republicans. The only way we’re going to increase that support over time is to start winning more of the folks’ hearts and minds. And if we slam the door on anyone in the GOP who tries to make that change, no one else will.

Just sayin’.

USA: Preacher Uses Pro Segregation Speeches to Make Point for Marriage Equality

Sunday, October 21st, 2012

This is an inspired rhetorical technique. Just take any number of speeches from the era of the racial miscegenation bans, just cite the leaders of the fundamentalist right from the 1960s, and switch the terms and see the exact same arguments that were made against African-Americans and their right to marry whosoever they choose as they are used today, by the same misguided voices.

USA: Michelle Obama’s Speech Hilights Marriage Equality

Thursday, September 6th, 2012

Michelle Obama on Marriage EqualityLast night, during her keynote address at the Democratic Convention, First Lady Michelle Obama, in so many words, endorsed marriage equality:

“If farmers and blacksmiths could win independence from an empire…if immigrants could leave behind everything they knew for a better life on our shores…if women could be dragged to jail for seeking the vote…if a generation could defeat a depression, and define greatness for all time…if a young preacher could lift us to the mountaintop with his righteous dream…and if proud Americans can be who they are and boldly stand at the altar with who they love…then surely, surely we can give everyone in this country a fair chance at that great American Dream.”

New York, USA: 10 Year Old Gives Marriage Equality Speech to City Council

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

Ten Year Old Gives Marriage Equality Speech to NYC City CouncilFifth-grader Kameron Slade’s speech on marriage equality is surely a winner. Last month, it disqualified him from his school’s speech competition because the principal said that the content was “inappropriate.”

But Kameron shared his speech with news station NY1, and hundreds of thousands of people watched it through ThinkProgress or other outlets. The following week, the principal offered the “compromise” of allowing Kameron to read his speech just to his classmates.

But Kameron was destined for more. Moved by his words, New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn (D) invited him to give his speech before the Council.

NAACPPresumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney addressed the annual NAACP convention Wednesday in Houston, where he pitched his candidacy as the best choice for African-American voters, including his opposition to marriage equality, a principle the organization recently backed.

“Any policy that lifts up and honors the family is going to be good for the country, and that must be our goal,” said the former Massachusetts governor in his first appearance before the group. “As president, I will promote strong families and I will defend traditional marriage.”
