What Strobhar said as reported by KPLU: “In the first fill quarter after this boycott was announced, our sales and our earrings — shall we say politely — were a bit disappointing.” Schultz responded by saying not every decision the company makes is an economic one: “The lens we use to make decisions is the lens of our people. We want to embrace diversity…If you feel, respectfully, that you can get a higher return than the 38 percent you got last year, it’s a free country. USA: Starbucks CEO Tells Marriage Equality Haters to Sell Shares in Company

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

StarbucksAre you a Starbucks Fan? Well, CEO Howard Schultz just gave us another reason to visit the ubiquitous coffee chain. Towleroad.com reports:

At the company’s annual meeting Wednesday, shareholder Tom Strobhar suggested that the boycott had indeed bled the company of value.”In the first fill quarter after this boycott was announced, our sales and our earnings — shall we say politely — were a bit disappointing,” he said.

CEO Howard Schultz shot back that the decision to back gay marriage was not about the bottom line, but about respecting diversity. He said the company had delivered a healthy return last year, boycott or no. “If you feel, respectfully, that you can get a higher return than the 38 percent you got last year, it’s a free country. You can sell your shares of Starbucks and buy shares in another company. Thank you very much,” he said, to loud applause from the audience.

Not to mention the fact that any given Starbucks in a rural area is the place to find progressive folks and the gays…

USA: Celebrities Support Starbucks Marriage Equality Appreciation Day

Wednesday, August 8th, 2012

Celebrities Support Starbucks Marriage Equality Appreciation DaySupporters of gay marriage responded Tuesday to last week’s rush to Chick-fil-A with an appreciation day of their own — at Starbucks.

“National Marriage Equality Day,” initiated by gay and lesbian marriage magazine “Equally Wed,” was meant as a counterweight to the Mike Huckabee-organized “appreciation day” to support the chicken chain president’s endorsement of “the biblical definition of the family unit.” More than 36,000 Facebook users have RSVP’d to the event, pledging to support institutions that back gay marriage — Starbucks in particular, but also Nike and

“Equally Wed” Editor-in-Chief Kirsten Ott Palladino said she’s “very touched” at the kind of reaction she saw on Tuesday. “I’m pretty excited,” Palladino said. “It was just a grassroots movement, so I’m pretty proud of the effort we put forward and the amount of people involved in such a short amount of time.”

TUESDAY: Show Your Appreciation at Starbucks & Other Companies That Support Marriage Equality

Monday, August 6th, 2012

UPDATE: Organizers of this event have expanded it to name it National Marriage Equality Day and asking people to patronize numerous companies that support LGBT equality in addition to Starbucks on Tuesday. A full list can be found on the Facebook page.

Like your summertime Iced Coffee Venti served with some LGBT equality? Then Aug. 7 is the day for you.

Equally Wed cofounder and editor-in-chief Kirsten Ott Palladino is ready to strike back against the right-wing’s successful Chick-fil-A’s Appreciation Day and is asking LGBT people and allies to show their support for Starbucks on Aug. 7 as part of National Starbucks Appreciation Day.

Based in Atlanta where Chick-fil-A is also based, Equally Wed is a national online magazine dedicated to celebrating marriage equality.

In a statement, Ott Palladino expressed frustration with people supporting Chick-fil-A on Aug. 1 at the bequest of right-wing radio host and former GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. The fast-food chain recorded record-setting sales on Wednesday.

USA: National Starbucks Appreciation Day for Marriage Equality – Tuesday August 7th

Friday, August 3rd, 2012

USA: National Starbucks Appreciation Day for Marriage Equality - Tuesday August 7thWednesday wasn’t easy as I watched tons of Facebook comments coming through my newsfeed from friends, colleagues, former cohorts and acquaintances spew hatred for my family. My lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community. We love our family fiercely, and it hurts to see so many verbally attack us based on lies spread by Mike Huckabee and his constituents.

We’ve long known that Chick-fil-A is a Christian-based company. That’s joyous and wonderful. And who doesn’t support free speech? I certainly do. But the issue, the one Mr. Huckabee doesn’t want his followers to think about, is the simple fact that Chick-fil-A continues to give a generous amount of its profits (current tab is at $5 million) to hate organizations such as Family Research Council and Exodus International that work directly against marriage equality. These organizations are run by people who deliberately try to make sure that my wife and I remain second-class citizens in the United States of America.

But the proposal of Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day turned into something awful and misunderstood as thousands of people drove to their local fried chicken restaurant franchise and declared to local TV stations recording them that they were there to support free speech and being a strong Christian. But insiders report that off-camera consumers were excited to be there to take a stand against same-sex marriage.
