Tech Diversity Reports Leaving Out LGBT Employees

Saturday, August 16th, 2014

FacebookRecently, various tech companies, including Apple, Google, Facebook, and Twitter, have been releasing diversity reports for the first time in history. Perhaps unsurprisingly, these reports show that the majority of employees at these tech juggernauts are white and male. But perhaps the least progressive thing about these diversity reports is what they leave out: they do not report on sexuality at all, nor do they offer any gender options beside male and female.

These facts stand in contrast to tech’s huge presence in San Francisco’s pride two months ago. Reuters quoted Fred Sainz, Vice President of Communications and Marketing at the Human Rights Campaign, saying of participation in the parade: “It’s a dog whistle to their consumer base that these tech firms are cool, with it, and progressive.” A former employee of both Google and Apple said, “Tech companies need to be at Pride simply to be in the game.”

The reports from these companies have come with public statements that say they are working to change these numbers. Apple’s openly gay CEO, Tim Cook, said, “As CEO, I’m not satisfied with the numbers on this page. They’re not new to us, and we’ve been working hard for quite some time to improve them.”

UK, Scotland: Man Must Pay Marriage Equality Advocate $40k for Online Slur

Tuesday, August 6th, 2013

Report Says Gays, Disabled Forced Into Marriage in ScotlandA man in Scotland who called a lesbian marriage equality advocate a pedophile has been ordered to pay restitution. Pink News reports:

A Twitter troll in Scotland who branded a teacher a paedophile for campaigning for equal marriage rights has been ordered to pay #40,000 by the country’s highest civil court. David Shuttleton, who lives near Glasgow, launched a vicious online hate campaign against Jaye Richards-Hill because of her support for equal marriage in Scotland… The Daily Record reports David Shuttleton attacked Ms Richards-Hill’s reputation by sending her hate-filled tweets with the hashtags “child abuse” and “danger to children”, and has since posted many other abusive messages about her on Twitter.

It wasn’t just a one-off comment – it was an ongoing, sustained hate campaign. But just wait for the cries of religious liberty on this one.

USA: NOM’s Twitter Feed, Facebook Page Also Hacked, With Hilarious Results

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

NOM LogoAbsolutely hilarious. At first blush it was thought that the National Organization for Marriage was apologizing for its race-baiting tactics. Jeremy Hooper of GoodAsYou reported that both the anti-LGBT org’s Facebook page and Twitter account also seemed to reflect a change in attitude.

The web site is now “down for maintenance.” We’ll see if Brian Brown can get his hate machine’s act together before we can enjoy much more of this. The Washington Blade:

Though this could be the result of an industrious hacker, if the posts are not actually the words of NOM, they could be the result of another staff defector. In April 2011, Louis Marinelli, who guided NOM’s social media presence to that point.

Following the forum, organiser Toro Productions tweeted “A quick analysis of the last 50 tweets: We reached 21,144 ppl and exposed 35,262 impressions http://t.co/R6XSTTHX AMAZING! #Equality.”

In her contributions to the forum Keneally urged people to find common ground with supportive people of faith on the issue and warned that civil unions would “undermine marriage for straight families” as well as same-sex couples if introduced instead of full marriage equality.

Australia: Twitter Forum for Marriage Equality Thursday

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

Australia Gay Marriage ForumFormer NSW premier Kristina Keneally will be one of a panel of special guest contributors in a live Twitter forum on marriage equality, taking place from 8-9pm this Thursday, September 29.

Keneally recently outlined her support for same-sex marriage on ABC TV’s Q and A and in an article in Eureka Street magazine.

“If we accept that heterosexual people who are physically unable to have children are able to express themselves in physical acts, why then aren’t people who God created with a homosexual orientation able to do the same?” Keneally wrote in Eureka Street in response to religious disapproval of same-sex relationships.

Miley Cyrus Leaves Twitter Over Anti Gay Marriage Hate Mail

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

“That’s the reason I deleted my Twitter account because I said on there that I believed in gay marriage because everyone should have the right to love each other, and I got such hate mail about my being a bad person.'”

Quote from Parade Magazine’s web-only outtakes with singer and actress Miley Cyrus . One year ago, Cyrus used her Twitter account to respond to a question from Perez Hilton about same-sex marriage, and that simple exchange got a lot of attention. (Parade)
