USA, Oregon: Gay and Lesbian Couples Crossing the Border to Marry in Washington State

Tuesday, November 26th, 2013

Vancouver, Washington

Vancouver, Washington

Now that Oregon has declared that it will recognize same-sex marriages from other states, gay lesbian couples in Portland are crossing the border in large numbers to marry in southern Washington.

The Columbian reports:

Portlanders Grant Edwards and Jim McPartland “waited and waited” to get married. They’d been living together for seven years. They wanted the world to know about their solid commitment. The only obstacle was a maddeningly simple one: according to state law that’s been affirmed by popular referendum, you can’t get married in Oregon if you’re gay. In late October, Edwards and McPartland stopped waiting. Jim has suffered some health scares recently, and the couple want to be sure Grant has no problem holding his beloved’s hand during any future hospital stay. So they went ahead and got their wedding license — in Clark County…

“We just think it’s crazy that we have to go to the state of Washington and legally get married, and now Oregon will recognize that marriage. And yet, gay Oregonians cannot get married in their own churches and have that recognized by the state. That is some bizarre law,” McPartland said. Bizarre or just businesslike, the new legal loophole amounts to a bistate bridge that’s carrying loads of same-sex couples across the border from hoping to hitched. Clark County marriage license applications jumped by nearly 50 percent in the 12 business days after Oregon’s Oct. 18 legal decision, according to a hand count by The Columbian. Two-thirds of all licenses after that day were for same-sex couples and 90 percent of those were from out of state — the vast majority from Oregon.

By the time Oregon gets around to voting on marriage equality next November, there may not be any same-sex couples left to marry!

Gay Wedding Show Coming to Vancouver on November 4th

Sunday, October 14th, 2012

Vancouver Gay Wedding ShowOn November 4, 2012, a committee of local wedding professionals will host Vancouver’s first annual gay and lesbian wedding show. I Do For Us Too is a wedding event where, from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm, committed and engaged couples can plan their wedding with professionals without discrimination. Guests will enjoy a selection of style scenes designed by coordinators with the help of a florist, stationary printer, and rental company.

These scenes are to give creative inspiration for couples and to showcase the professional’s creative ability. In addition to 50 professional wedding vendors, guest can also enjoy light hor d’ oeuvres, fashion show, Q & A session, Referendum 74 session, lounge area, silent auction of the exhibitor’s services and products, and a live auction of a grand wedding package. The event is sponsored in part by the Hilton Vancouver Washington.

The event was created by an idea from Diane and Rob Figley of Red Raccoon1, LLC, local wedding officiants. Diane and Rob reached out to the professional wedding community for help to produce this historic event and with the help of the event committee I Do For Us Too was created. The committee consists of the following professionals: Red Raccoon1, LLC, Cloud Nine Events & Accessories, Panache Weddings & Events, Mega Music Entertainment, Crave Design, and Elephants Delicatessen.

An inherent problem for many same sex couples is that when planning their wedding or commitment celebration, they are met with discrimination or services are not available to them because of their lifestyle. The committee unanimously agreed that there needed to be a wedding show for the LGBT community where couples can feel comfortable knowing that, without a doubt, they will be greeted by friendly professionals who will be happy to offer their services. Equality SW Washington, a group of marriage equality supporters, will attend the event as exhibitors to help gain support for the passage of Washington State’s Referendum 74. Couples and supporters of marriage equality are encouraged to show their support at this historic event.

The event will begin with registration, and then proceed to he style scenes & exhibiting professionals where guests can ask questions and discover the wide variety of options. The silent auction will being at 1:00 pm and will end at 5:00 pm, after which the live auction for the grand wedding package will begin. Guests who participate in the auctions must register at the entrance.

Throughout the duration of the event, a Q & A session, Referendum Session, and fashion show will be conducted.

If you would like to partake in this new wedding event, online tickets are available for $10 per engaged/committed couple and $8 for singles, supporters, family, and friends at Paypal located on the website. Tickets will also be available at the door on the day of the event for $15 per engaged/committed couple and $10 for singles, supporters, family, and friends. Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

Same-sex marriage supporters will march in Cowlitz County Saturday and Sunday as part of a longer march from Vancouver to Olympia.

The Love for All March for Marriage Equality is to express support for legalizing gay marriage in Washington and will cover a total of 100 miles. Most participants will only walk in one or two segments.

The local segments include Kalama to Longview on Saturday and then Longview to Vader on Sunday, said Longview resident Eileen Arnold, a member of the Diversity Task Force at Longview United Methodist Church. Local organizers hope to see between 20 to 50 people walking on those legs of the trip, she said.
