Gay UK Vicar Who Married His Partner Fired By Bishop

Sunday, June 22nd, 2014

LondonA gay UK vicar who married his partner after the UK legalized marriage equality has been fired.

Pink News reports:

Today it has emerged that the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham, Richard Inwood, has removed Pemberton’s Permission to Officiate (PTO), revoking his permission to perform services in the diocese. Pemberton holds his licence in the Diocese of Lincoln – which has not yet revoked it – and he is still employed by the NHS as a chaplain. Though he declined to comment on the matter, Pemberton has since confirmed that reports are “basically accurate”.

So will we hear any outrage from the far right groups who are outraged when someone who opposes marriage equality quits his job, now that someone has been actually fired just for getting legally married? Not holding my breath.

Scotland, United Kingdom: First Minister’s Vicar Speaks Out Against Marriage Equality

Sunday, November 18th, 2012

Scotland's First Minister's Vicar Speaks Out Against Marriage EqualityAlex Salmond’s local vicar has spoken out against the first minister’s plans to make gay marriage legal in Scotland.
Unlike the current proposals in England and Wales, Scotland plans to give local churches and synagogues the right to marry same-sex couples if they wish to do so, although no church or other religious institution will be forced to conduct a marriage if it doesn’t want to.

The Rev Andrew Fothergill, of Strichen and Tyrie Parish Church in Aberdeenshire told the Sunday Times: “My personal position is that I think naturally we have as celebrants some concerns about the assurances that have been given by the Scottish government about the safeguards it intends to put in place to protect celebrants who would hold a different position from what the future government legislation might become.

“I think many of us are a bit nervous about what protection it can actually offer.”
