Tuesday, December 18th, 2012

Australian Marriage Equality Opens New Branch in VictoriaSame-sex marriage campaign group Australian Marriage Equality (AME) have launched a new branch in the state of Victoria.

‘Support for marriage equality has always been strong in Melbourne, and we aim to channel that support into more effective lobbying, advocacy and community organizing,’ said the new convener of the Victorian AME branch, Carl Katter.

AME Victoria’s first initiative will be collecting signatures for a petition for marriage equality to send to state parliament.

Victoria, Australia: No Conscience Vote on Marriage Equality, Premier Says

Saturday, September 22nd, 2012

Australia: No Conscience Vote on Marriage Equality, Victoria Premier SaysVICTORIA will not follow in the footsteps of others states pushing to legalise same-sex marriage, with Premier Ted Baillieu refusing to allow Liberal MPs a conscience vote on the issue.

The decision puts Mr Baillieu at odds with his New South Wales Liberal counterpart, Barry O’Farrell, who last week confirmed he would grant a free vote on a gay marriage bill to be drafted by a group of cross-party MPs later this year.

In Victoria, a private member’s bill on the issue was introduced by Greens MP Sue Pennicuik in June, but would require broader political support to pass the Parliament, where the Coalition controls both houses.

Victoria, Australia: Marriage Equality Bill To Be Introduced in State Parliament

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

Marriage Equality and Straight GuysA motion in support of marriage equality passed in the Parliament of New South Wales last week, and now Victoria’s government could be next.

Victorian Greens MLC Sue Pennicuik (pictured) has announced today that she will introduce a bill to provide for same-sex marriage in the Victorian parliament tomorrow.

“Much has happened in the quest for marriage equality in recent years and support in the community is growing,” she realises. “Polls show that around two-thirds of Australians (and rising) support same-sex marriage. “This is an issue that will not go away until it is fixed.”

Australia: Victorian ALP Votes in Favor of Marriage Equality

Friday, October 7th, 2011

Australia Gay Marriage VoteThe ALP state conference has voted to send a message to Julia Gillard to “get over it” and legalise gay marriage. Only the conservative shop assistant’s union voted against the urgency motion.

However, national secretary Joe De Bruyn declined to debate the issue, saying it was a matter for the national platform and the powerful union would save its arguments for the National conference in December.

Ms Gillard has regularly reiterated her opposition to gay marriage, but a strong move is expected at the national conference to change the party’s platform, which will put pressure on the federal government to amend the Marriage Act.

Australia: Lack of Quorum Scuttles Victoria Marriage Equality Discussion

Saturday, May 21st, 2011

Victoria Gay MarriageA Victorian Labor Party move to back same-sex marriage has failed to even be discussed because there were not enough people in the room to vote.

The issue had been set to put the Victorian ALP at odds with Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who does not support gay marriage.

But that and other motions that were to be debated by the state conference in Melbourne on Saturday did not go ahead, all because the meeting was short by the two or three people needed to have a quorum.

Australia: Victoria’s Labor Party Leader Endorses Marriage Equality

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Daniel AndrewsThe Labor Party’s Victorian leader (the second largest state), Daniel Andrews, has given his backing to equality in Australia.

“Like a growing number of Australians I recognise that denying same sex couples the option of marriage is unfair,” Mr Andrews told The Australian. “My view on this issue was influenced when one of my staff and her partner had to travel to America to get married. That brought home to me the unfairness of the current situation.”

Australia: New Victorian Government Trying to Weaken Protections for Gays, Single Parents

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

The true nature of the new Victorian Liberal Government is starting to emerge.

Last week the Victorian Attorney-General, Robert Clark, introduced legislation to substantially weaken protection against discrimination for single parents, defacto couples and members of Victoria’s gay and lesbian community.

The legislation, if passed, would repeal a carefully drafted provision of the Equal Opportunities Act 2010, enacted by the previous Labor Government. This provision prevents religious groups from discriminating in hiring staff on religious grounds, unless the organisation can identify how a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity affects their ability to meet the inherent requirements of the job.
