Matt Baume’s Field Guide to Sneaky Homophobic Bills

Friday, March 6th, 2015

Matt Baume

In a special two part video, Matt Baume takes viewers on a safari adventure through the country as he points out the four major types of anti-LGBT laws that are stealthily stealing away civil rights for everyone and what we can all do to stand up to this homophobic backlash.

Said Baume:

“Anti-gay discrimination is going extinct. But it’s not going without a fight. A beast is at its most desperate when its facing starvation. So it will do anything to adapt, to survive, and to pass itself on to the next generation.”

A new video from Girl Pants Productions illustrates just how insane homophobic arguments are to the majority of Americans who support LGBT equality.

Because, as we all know, being left-handed is really just a choice and guys who say they love both chocolate and vanilla ice cream are really just chocolate lovers too afraid to come out of the closet.

MEUSA Releases Historic Edie Windsor Video

Thursday, June 26th, 2014

Edie Windsor

One year ago today, Windsor v. United States became one of the most important court cases in history for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community. Since June 2013, every single one of the 15 court cases striking down bans on marriage equality has used the Windsor decision at the core of its legal decision.

“All of this began when a now famous Marriage Equality New York (MEUSA) volunteer decided she wouldn’t take “no” for an answer,” said MEUSA Executive Director Brian Silva. “We all owe a huge debt of gratitude to Edie Windsor and her late wife Thea for standing up for all of us. In celebration of the one-year anniversary of the Windsor decision, and in appreciation for the support shown for Edie, her wife Thea, MENY, MEUSA and the entire marriage equality movement, I am proud today to launch the first in our series of intimate MEUSA interviews with Edie.”

Each of these videos, the first being released today with others to follow throughout July, explores Edie’s life through her own words as she relates her story to her friend and MEUSA colleague, Cathy Marino-Thomas. From how she met Thea and got to know the LGBTQ world during their early days together, through their struggle to get married, and eventually to the DOMA case and the Supreme Court of the United States.

“Join us over the next few weeks in getting to know Edie – in her own words,” said MEUSA Board Member Cathy Marino-Thomas. “It was an honor and a joy to hear Edie’s story in person, and now for us to be able to share her incredible story with the world.”

Happy Windsor Anniversary to us all!

India: Awesome New UN Marriage Equality Video – Bollywood-Style

Wednesday, April 30th, 2014

The UN has released a great new video for marriage equality and LGBT rights in India.

Bollywood Video

Joe.My.God reports:

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on Wednesday launched the first ever Bollywood-style UN music video at a press conference in Mumbai to promote its Free & Equal campaign for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. The two-and-a-half minute video, called “The Welcome”, stars actress and former Miss India Celina Jaitly. Jaitly, who was last year nominated by the High Commissioner as a “UN equality champion” in recognition of her support for LGBT equality, makes her musical debut in the video, singing a new version of the 1979 Bollywood classic, Uthe Sab Ke Kadam. The song was recomposed and remixed by Neeraj Shreedhar of the Bombay Vikings, and produced in association with the music company Saregama India.

Watch the whole thing – it’s simply joyous.

Honeymaid Turns Anti Gay Hate Into Love

Saturday, April 5th, 2014

Honeymaid Love VideoOMG this is amazing – after Honeymaid took flack for its “Wholesome” commercial featuring, among others, gay families, it too the hateful responses and turned them into something beautiful.

The Advocate reports:

Nabisco graham cracker snack brand Honey Maid released a new ad campaign in March, “This Is Wholesome,” which features a variety of families, including those with interracial, single, and gay parents. However, a handful of homophobes — including the antigay group (far less than) One Million Moms — were “outraged” and blasted the graham cracker brand for “promoting homosexuality.” In a brilliant move, Honey Maid has responded with a new video featuring two artists who create a heartwarming message from paper printouts of the hateful messages the brand received since the inclusive ad aired.

You have to watch this – it’s beautiful. And as the video notes, they received ten times as many positive responses as negative ones.

Marriage Equality USA Releases New She4Me Video for Valentines

Friday, February 14th, 2014

Marriage Equality USA (MEUSA) is just premiered the long anticipated SHE4ME viral video PSA on YouTube. The project, SHE4MarriageEquality (SHE4ME), is a five+ minute video directed by award winning Writer/Director Nicole Conn, starring Nicole Pacent, Mike C. Manning, Gabrielle Christian, and Barbara Niven. The video features several other cameos by actresses who have portrayed seminal lesbian roles and introduces two new young talents, dancer Jolie Ponchetti and actress Hazel Sepenuk.

She4Me VideoThe video opens up to a beautiful wedding, where viewers witness a celebration of love between family, friends, and guests. The viewers are taken on a journey through exquisite flashbacks of the bride and her best friend in their youth. We witness an underlying tension during the present day wedding before being presented with an endearing plot twist. The twist has been designed to help transmit a hopeful message of love and understanding to a mainstream audience, thinking of those with opinions somewhere near neutral on the freedom to marry for same-sex couples.

SHE4ME was born from the song SHE, written and performed by singer-songwriter Jen Foster, who appears in the video as the “Wedding Singer.” The song has been a favorite within the lesbian community for over a decade and is regularly used in lesbian commitment ceremonies. A new version of the track has been produced and scored by Eve Nelson who designed an incredible fusion of contemporary orchestra and dance to compliment the video storyboard.

This month, SHE4ME Director Conn, was officially crowned the #1 LGBT Feature film Writer/Director of all time. Nicole Conn, best known for her groundbreaking multiple award winning lesbian films, Claire Of The Moon (1992); little man (2005); Elena Undone (2010); and A Perfect Ending (2012); has once again delivered in this poignant yet epic music video that celebrates Marriage Equality.

“The pinnacle of love is the joining of two souls to become one and the most sacred act to commemorate this is Marriage. When I was approached to come up with a concept for the SHE4ME supporting Marriage Equality, I was thrilled. My entire career has been devoted to creating books and films that provoke the viewer to experience the spectrum of emotions involved with love and passion and our goal here was to produce something that could communicate our message to a mass audience.” -Nicole Conn

SHE4ME is being released on the first Valentine’s Day after Bridegroom, a 2013 documentary in which Shane Bitney Crone talks about growing up gay in Montana and having a grim outlook on life not knowing if he could meet his soul mate, fall in love, and live happily ever after – much less, fathom the idea of getting married and having a family. Like many within the LGBT community, Crone assumed he would live a lonely existence full of shame – in part, because he had never been exposed to a healthy image of a gay person. One that is capable of finding true love.

SHE4ME is all about love. About how underneath it all, “Love is Love” and, to coin a lyric from the song SHE, “there is nothing to be afraid of.” This video shows a face that people need to see, the face of unconditional love. With the help of YouTube and hundreds of volunteers, partner organizations, SHE4ME is expected to reach millions of people all around the globe, especially in places where LGBT people are not accepted.

Wedding scenes were filmed at the iconic Andaz West Hollywood, which has recently served as location for many high profile same-sex weddings.

Marriage Equality USA (MEUSA), the largest grassroots Marriage Equality organization in the United States, partnered with Fosterchild Records and Melke Pty Ltd to produce this social project.

Brian Silva, Executive Director for Marriage Equality USA says, “Music and video projects like this have the power to impact millions of viewers by showing the love and commitment that is celebrated and protected by passing civil marriage equality for LGBTQ families.”

Melke brings experience in LGBT media and music-centric projects to the table. Currently the company represents Jen Foster; is producing Nicole Conn’s next film; and is teaming up with WingSpan Pictures and GLSEN to produce the feature length Love Is All You Need in support of anti-bullying.
